My Husband Wanted a Real Family With His Mistress Chapter 1

On our third wedding anniversary, I left the clinic two hours early. That never happens. I'm Dr. Aurelia Spencer. Women fly across the world to sit in my office and ask me for a baby. I don't leave early.

But tonight I had a gift.

It was a first edition of *The Great Gatsby*, wrapped in dark blue paper. Two years ago, at some dinner party, Declan said his grandfather used to read it to him. He said it once and never again. He forgot. I didn't. It took me eight months and one very stubborn dealer in London to find it.

I held the box against my chest in the elevator. The private car rose fast toward our penthouse on the Upper East Side. Outside the glass, Manhattan was gray and wet. Rain slid down the windows like it was in a hurry.

The doors opened. The foyer was dim. Declan's coat hung on the hook. Kaizen's little blue shoes were gone from the mat. His grandmother, Margaret Knight, had insisted on taking him to the Hamptons for the weekend. *You two deserve a night alone,* she'd said, touching her pearls.

I smiled when she said it. I believed her.

I walked down the hall. Then I saw the shoes. Red soles. A size six. Not mine.

I didn't stop. I think some part of me already knew. I had walked this hallway in my mind a hundred times. Every late meeting. Every lipstick shade that wasn't mine on his collar. Every lie I swallowed because I loved him.

I opened the bedroom door.

She was in our bed. Young. Blonde. Long legs tangled in the sheets I picked out in Milan. I knew her face. Laylah Burns. She had smiled at me at the Met Gala last spring and said she loved my dress.

She didn't scream. She pulled the sheet up slowly, like a curtain at the end of a show. Her eyes stayed on mine. She wasn't embarrassed. She was waiting.

Declan stood by the window, already half dressed. White shirt. Sleeves open. He looked at me the way he looks at a quarterly report he doesn't like.

The box was still in my hands. The paper crinkled under my fingers.

"You're early," he said.

That was it. Not *I'm sorry*. Not *it's not what it looks like*. Just a schedule problem.

"It's our anniversary," I said.

"I know what day it is."

He reached for his cufflinks on the dresser. Gold. Engraved. A gift from his father. He slid one through the cuff, then the other, slow and careful.

My stomach went cold. I knew that move. In three years I had seen it maybe a dozen times. He always fixed his cufflinks right before he said something that would cut. I never told him I noticed. I just learned to brace.

"I want a divorce, Aurelia."

The rain got louder against the glass.

"I want to give Laylah a real home," he said.

*Real.*

The word sat in the room like a knife on a table. I looked around. The gray walls I painted twice to get right. The photo of Kaizen's first birthday on the nightstand. The chair where I nursed our son at three in the morning while Declan slept. Three years of my life, and to him it was a set. A rehearsal.

Laylah tucked her hair behind her ear. A small, pretty move. She'd practiced it.

I waited for the tears. They didn't come. Something in my chest went very still, like a heart monitor before the alarm.

"Okay," I said.

Declan blinked. Just once. He expected a scene. Crying. Begging. Maybe a thrown vase. He had a plan for all of that. He didn't have a plan for *okay*.

"Your lawyers will want to fight about money," I said. "Tell them not to bother. I don't want it. No alimony. No property. No shares. Nothing."

His eyes narrowed. "What's the catch?"

"Kaizen." I held his gaze. "I get full custody. That's my only condition."

He almost laughed. I saw it at the corner of his mouth. He glanced at Laylah, then back at me.

"Fine," he said. Too fast. Way too fast. "Take him. We'll have more."

Laylah smiled into the sheet.

*We'll have more.*

I thought about the file locked in my clinic. The lab report with his name on it. The numbers I changed with my own hands three years ago, so the man I loved would never have to feel small. Sperm motility so low it barely counted. I was the only reason he had a son at all.

I set the blue box on the dresser, right next to his cufflinks.

"Happy anniversary, Declan."

I walked out. I didn't run.

The parking garage smelled like rain and gasoline. I sat in my car with the engine off. My hands rested on the wheel. They weren't shaking. That scared me more than anything.

I called Kelsey.

Kelsey Morrison picked up on the second ring. We met in grad school. Two scholarship girls who never fit in. She became one of the sharpest litigators in Manhattan. I became a doctor. We promised we'd never let anyone make us small.

I broke that promise first.

"Rel? It's your anniversary. Why are you calling me?"

I told her. All of it. The shoes. The bed. The cufflinks. The word *real*. My terms. His answer. My voice was flat and clean, like I was reading a chart.

When I finished, the line went quiet.

One second.

Two.

Three.

"I'll start pulling case files tonight," Kelsey said. Her voice was low and hard. "Tell me everything."

I looked up through the windshield. Forty floors above me, the penthouse lights were still on.

Let them be happy for now.

"Everything," I said, and started the engine.
