My Husband Vanished, Then Married Someone Else
My Husband Vanished, Then Married Someone Else Chapter 1
During a geological survey, Devin Riggs vanished without a trace. I searched for a year, but there was no word from him. Then, unexpectedly, I saw him again at his wedding with Elma Holt.
"Elma, I’ve been waiting for this moment for ten long years."
"I can’t deceive myself and spend my life with someone I don’t love. I can’t let you go to someone else."
"From beginning to end, I’ve only loved you."
On stage, my husband professed his love with such devotion, while offstage, I held the camera, my hands trembling uncontrollably. In that moment, I realized Devin hadn’t really gone missing; he had walked away from his wife and daughter in pursuit of true love!
I glared at Devin, my resentment bubbling as I saw the mix of guilt and indifference in his eyes. “I want to report that someone is suspected of bigamy!”
——
I had imagined a thousand scenarios for running into Devin again, but I never thought it would happen at his wedding. The woman he was marrying was the white moonlight he had longed for all these years—Elma. As a photographer, I waited in the audience before the ceremony began.
“Did you hear that the groom planned the entire wedding himself?”
“He really loves her. He rehearsed the entire wedding ceremony dozens of times, and each time, his hands shook with nervousness.”
“I heard the bride mention backstage that this man has secretly loved her for ten years!”
“Finally, I’m witnessing true love.”
As my colleagues spoke about the groom, their excitement palpable, I quietly admired the venue, silently agreeing with their sentiments. The exquisite planning, lavish decor, and meticulous details all showcased his deep understanding of her preferences and the lengths he went to make this day special. Every element clearly reflected the groom's love and thoughtfulness.
Everyone longs for love, especially someone like me who has never had a wedding and has lost a husband. A few images flickered through my mind, making my heart ache. Just as I began to drift into my memories, the wedding ceremony commenced. I snapped out of my reverie and shifted into work mode.
Briana still needs child support, so I have to stay focused. As the lights illuminated the stage, the staff slowly opened the doors. The bride stepped into view, and the groom emerged from behind the barrier, ready to embrace this moment.
As they moved closer together, their bodies converged amid the chaos. I focused my camera, and the moment I saw them clearly, I froze in place. Blood rushed to my head, and I felt it boiling in my veins. The heat burned my eyes, turning them a fierce scarlet.
The groom was my husband, Devin, who had disappeared for a year. And I recognized the bride too—Devin's first love. I stared at the stage, desperately searching for any sign that he wasn’t truly Devin. Unfortunately, I found nothing to confirm my hopes. The teardrop mole beneath his eye, the small scar at the corner of his eye, and the burn mark on his ring finger all screamed that he was indeed my husband.
Maybe my gaze was too intense, as Devin turned his head to look at me. But he quickly looked away, as if he didn’t even recognize me. How could he not know who I was? He thought he was hiding it well, but the moment our eyes met, the guilt in his expression betrayed him... He hadn’t lost his memory like in the stories, nor had he forgotten our past. He simply chose to cheat.
He abandoned his wife and daughter to chase after the love of his youth. The Devin who had vanished for a year seemed to have transformed into a completely different person. He appeared dignified and elegant, a stark contrast to the man I once knew. In this moment, he gazed at Elma with an expression of sincerity, and the depths of his eyes were filled with love I had never seen before.
My heart tightened at the sight, a mix of shock and bitterness flooding through me. Just as my colleague had said, he was visibly nervous. Devin trembled all over, yet he knelt on one knee with perfect composure.
"Elma, I’ve been waiting for this moment for ten years."
"I love you so much; I’ve loved you for a decade! I’ve never stopped!"
"I tried to live with other women. I tried to forget you, but seven years have passed, and I just can’t do it."
"Other women are mere phantoms to me; I can’t see them. I can only see you! I only love you!"
Elma was moved to tears, and Devin hurriedly wiped them away, his deep eyes brimming with emotion. I stared at the stage, feeling like I was inflicting pain on myself, clinging to the last glimmer of hope in my heart.
I secretly told myself that as long as he was willing to look back and explain things to me, there was still hope for us. But when I saw Devin wiping away Elma's tears without hesitation, it felt like all my strength drained away in an instant. My heart twisted wildly, and I trembled with pain.
Devin had always struggled with severe mysophobia, which is why I never dared to cry in front of him. He would only frown and say, “That’s dirty.”
“Okay, okay!”
“I’ve loved our Elma for ten years. So devoted.”
“The man is handsome, and the woman is beautiful. They have good genes, and as a couple, they’re perfect. If they have a son, he’ll definitely be good-looking!”
The guests were so moved that they began to murmur excitedly. I was the only one standing there in a daze, unable to process what was happening.
It wasn’t until Devin and Elma exchanged rings and kissed passionately on stage that reality hit me. I caught a glimpse of Elma's smug and disdainful expression from a few meters away, and Devin didn’t even dare to turn around. In that moment, everything clicked into place for me.
She did it on purpose, deliberately sending the original photographer away, intentionally allowing me to take over, and making sure I witnessed this scene. It felt like she was demonstrating something to me. And Devin was entirely biased and indulgent toward her.
He truly loved Elma with an intensity that made him completely ungrateful! A sad smile tugged at the corners of my mouth as I struggled to steady my trembling body. When the couple on stage finally broke their kiss, I stopped avoiding the situation and locked my gaze on Devin.
His expression was cold and unnatural. With determination, I pulled out my cell phone. “I want to call the police. My husband, Devin, is suspected of bigamy!”
