Chapter 2

I sat on the cold tile and pressed the phone to my ear.

"They want me to carry it," I said. My voice echoed off the marble. "Nine months. Best doctors. Discreet."

Tristan didn't speak right away. I could hear traffic on his end. A horn. Someone shouting.

"Say that again," he said.

"A surrogate pregnancy. For Dominick and Lyla." I closed my eyes. "He said it's the least I can do. For family."

The silence stretched. Then: "What did you tell him?"

"I said yes."

Another pause. Longer. I could feel him thinking through the phone, the way you feel weather changing.

"Hadlee—"

"I have an idea," I said. "But I need you to hear me all the way through."

I told him. The whole thing. My voice stayed level. Clinical. When I finished, the bathroom was so quiet I could hear my own pulse.

"You're sure," he said finally.

"I'm sure."

"This isn't—" He stopped. Started again. "You don't owe me this."

"I know."

"If you're doing this because you think it's the only way out—"

"I'm doing this because it's my way out," I said. "And I'm asking if you'll help me."

The traffic noise faded. He must have stepped inside.

"Tell me when," he said.

---

The address came two days later. A text from the burner phone. Just numbers and a street name in Tribeca.

I told Dominick I had a fitting. He didn't look up from his laptop.

The building was new glass and old brick. No doorman. I punched in the code Tristan sent and rode the elevator to the eighth floor. The hallway smelled like paint and nothing else.

He opened the door before I knocked.

"Hi," I said.

"Hi."

The apartment was empty in the way expensive places are empty when no one lives in them. White walls. Clean floors. A couch still wrapped in plastic. One window overlooking the street.

Tristan stepped back to let me in. He was wearing a dark sweater and jeans. His feet were bare. That detail caught me—bare feet, like he'd been here long enough to take his shoes off.

"This is yours?" I asked.

"Technically it belongs to a shell company that belongs to another shell company." He closed the door. "Dominick won't find it."

I walked to the window. Outside, people moved through their lives. A woman with a dog. A delivery truck double-parked. Normal things happening to normal people.

"I haven't changed my mind," I said to the glass.

"I know."

"I need you to understand—" I turned. He was watching me with that same steady quiet, the kind that doesn't ask you to perform. "This isn't because I think you're owed something. Or because I don't have another option."

"Then why?"

I looked at him. Really looked. The scar on his forearm. The way he held himself like someone who'd learned early that space was conditional.

"Because you're the only person who ever helped me without asking what it cost."

He crossed the room. Not fast. Careful. He stopped close enough that I could see the exact color of his eyes—gray, like winter water.

"You can stop," he said. "Any time. Any moment. You say the word and I take you home."

"I know."

"I mean it, Hadlee."

"I know."

He lifted his hands and held my face. His palms were warm. Callused. I realized I was shaking.

"You're sure," he said. Not a question. A last door I could walk back through.

I kissed him.

---

Afterward, we lay in the dark.

The apartment had no curtains yet. Streetlight came through the window in long orange slants. I could hear my own breathing. His. The city humming below.

My hands were flat on the sheets.

That was the thing I noticed first. My hands. Still. Not reaching for a pen or a margin or some surface to translate this onto. Just—still.

Tristan's fingers found mine. Laced through. Held.

"You okay?" he asked.

I turned my head on the pillow. His profile in the half-light looked carved. Patient. Like he'd wait as long as it took for me to answer.

"I don't know," I said.

He squeezed my hand.

"That's okay too."

I closed my eyes. Somewhere far off, a siren started and faded. I thought about the facility. The white rooms. The year I lost in them. The thing I lost that I still couldn't say out loud.

I thought about Dominick's hand on Lyla's waist. The watch he never took off. The coffee mug with our wedding date in gold.

I thought about ten years folding themselves quietly.

And then I stopped thinking.

I lay there in the dark with Tristan's hand in mine, and for the first time in longer than I could remember, I took a breath that went all the way down.

All the way to the bottom.

And back up again.
