Chapter 4

The valet was still holding my ticket when the two men came out of the dark.

I'd had dinner alone, a work dinner that turned into no dinner at all, just me picking at salmon while I read a term sheet on my phone. Beverly Hills at nine at night smells like jasmine and exhaust. I remember that detail because it's the last normal thing I noticed before my arm was grabbed hard enough to bruise.

One man had my wrist. The other had my waist. I opened my mouth to say something sharp and professional, the kind of thing I say when a client's manager crosses a line, and then I understood, all at once, that this wasn't that. This was hands that didn't care what I said.

My dress tore at the shoulder. I heard the seam go before I felt it, a clean rip, and then the cold hit my skin and a phone flashed in my face, once, twice, and I threw my arm up too late. They were gone before the valet even turned around — into a dark sedan, no plates I could read, taillights already small.

I stood on the curb holding the front of my dress together with one hand.

I did not scream. I want that on the record, too. I called an Uber, because calling 911 meant becoming a headline before I'd decided what kind of headline I wanted to be, and I got in the back seat and I called Miley.

"I need Evan," I said. My voice came out level. I hated how level it came out, like my body had decided to be useful before my mind caught up. "I need everything."

"It's already started," Miley said. No questions. That's the thing about Miley — she asks later, when it's safe to ask.

By the time I got home, the photos were already up. A burner account, no followers, one post: me on the sidewalk, dress torn, face caught mid-flinch, captioned *the real Mackenzie Lawson — someone should check on her.* Carly's fingerprints were all over the phrasing even though her name was nowhere on the page. I recognized her cadence the way you recognize handwriting.

I didn't read the comments. I've learned not to.

Evan called me the next morning, and again the morning after that, each time with less patience and more precision. "Forty-eight hours," he said the first time, "and I'll have the device fingerprint on the burner account." He had it in thirty. "Seventy-two," he said about the crypto, "and I'll have the wallet that paid those two men." He had it in sixty. Every hour, another piece landed on his desk — timestamped, notarized, boxed up clean enough to hand a detective without a single follow-up question. Evan doesn't do vague. Vague is how guilty men walk.

I didn't eat much, those two days. I told myself it was strategy — stay sharp, stay lean, stay ready — but it wasn't strategy. It was just true. Food seemed like a decision I didn't have the bandwidth to make.

Miley noticed before I told her anything. Miley always notices.

She didn't call me about it. She called Lucian.

I found out later, the way I find out most things that get done around me without my permission — after the fact, gift-wrapped as a fait accompli. She told him one thing, and one thing only: *She hasn't eaten in two days and she won't answer her phone.* No context. No explanation of the dress, the photos, the burner account. She trusted him with almost nothing and somehow that was the exact right amount to trust him with.

He showed up at seven that evening with two bags of takeout and no questions in his face.

I opened the door already bracing for the conversation I didn't have the strength to have — the one where I'd have to explain the tear in the fabric, the flash of the camera, the ugly caption underneath my own face. He didn't ask for it. He held up the bags like that was the whole sentence he'd come to deliver, and stepped past me into the kitchen like he'd been there before, though he never had.

He fed Pickles first. He didn't ask where the food was — he just found it, second cabinet, like he'd clocked it on some earlier visit that didn't exist. Then he sat on the far end of my couch, put his phone face-down on the cushion between us, and read something on his laptop while I picked at a container of noodles I didn't want.

He was still there at midnight.

I fell asleep somewhere in the second hour, upright, my head tipping against the arm of the couch, and when I woke up at six the blanket from my bedroom was over my legs and he was still there, same spot, same quiet.

He still hadn't asked me what happened.

I have a category in my head for everything. Investors. Clients. Threats. Assets. I sat there in the gray early light, watching a man read emails on my couch like it was the most unremarkable thing in the world, and I understood, with something close to alarm, that I had absolutely no category for him at all.
