Chapter 1

The kitchen table was cold beneath my palms. Between my hands lay the real estate listing agreement.

If I signed it, my parents’ brownstone would be gone. It was a three-story brick building in downtown Manhattan, the only thing they left me when they died five years ago. It was fully paid off. It was my only home.

"Just sign on the line, sweetie," Alistair said. He leaned over me, pointing a manicured finger at the bottom of the page. "The specialist in Boston is expensive. These new fertility treatments won't pay for themselves."

His voice was gentle, but I heard the tight edge underneath.

I looked down. My pen hovered over the blank space. I twisted my mother’s silver wedding ring around my finger. It was a nervous habit I couldn't break.

"Is there really no other way?" I whispered. "We could take out a loan."

"We talked about this, Lina," he sighed, sounding disappointed. "Debt will ruin us. Selling the house is the responsible choice. Don’t you want us to have a family?"

My chest ached. For three years, I had carried the shame of being broken. Every failed cycle, every bitter herbal tonic he forced me to drink twice a day—it was all my fault.

Before I could answer, his phone buzzed on the marble counter.

Alistair glanced at the screen. His eyes shifted. "I need to take this work call," he said quickly, slipping it into his pocket before pulling it back out to check the caller ID. "Then I'm jumping in the shower. Sign the papers while I'm in there, okay?"

He set the phone faceup on the island and hurried toward the master bathroom. A moment later, the pipes groaned, and water began to rush.

The kitchen went dead quiet. Then, the phone lit up again.

A notification banner appeared across the glass.

*D 💋: Baby, when's my car getting delivered? You promised after the crowdfunding closed 😘*

Below the text was a photo of a brand-new white Porsche Cayenne sitting on a showroom floor.

My breath stopped.

I stood up slowly, my slippers scraping against the wood floor. I reached out and picked up the phone. My fingers were trembling so hard I almost dropped it.

I typed in his passcode—our anniversary. The screen unlocked instantly.

I tapped the messaging app. The contact was saved simply as "D." Her full name was right there in the chat history: Dallas Crawford.

There were hundreds of messages. Photos of her in lingerie. Messages where he called her his real wife.

Then I saw the numbers.

Alistair had sent her tens of thousands of dollars through wire transfers. My thumbs moved faster, scrolling back through months of conversations.

*“Don’t worry, babe,”* one message from Alistair read. *“The GoFundMe hit $600,000 yesterday. People eat up the tragic sick-wife story. As soon as I get Lina to sign over the brownstone, we cash out completely. She has no idea. She thinks she’s dying of ovarian failure.”*

*“You’re so bad 😈,”* Dallas had replied. *“Make sure the house money clears before you serve her the divorce papers.”*

A cold wave washed over my body. My knees felt hollow.

Six hundred thousand dollars. He had posted videos online, crying about my "rare reproductive illness," begging strangers for donations. Meanwhile, he made me drink jars of foul, black liquid that made me violently ill every single morning.

I wasn't sick. I was never sick.

He was poisoning me with cheap herbs to keep me weak while he bought another woman a luxury car.

The water pipes stopped rattling. The shower was off.

Panic flared in my ribs. I had seconds.

I backed out of the messages, wiped the screen on my leggings, and placed the phone back on the counter at the exact angle he had left it.

I rushed back to the table, sat down, and bent forward. I grabbed my stomach with both hands and let out a weak groan.

The bathroom door opened. Alistair stepped out, a towel slung over his bare shoulders. He smelled of expensive sandalwood soap.

"Lina?" He walked into the kitchen, his eyes dropping immediately to the table. The listing paper was still completely blank.

His jaw tightened. A flash of pure irritation crossed his face before he smoothed it away.

"You didn't sign it," he said, his voice flat.

"I'm sorry," I gasped out, squeezing my eyes shut to hide the terror inside them. "My stomach... it's cramping so bad. The herbs you brewed this morning... it feels like knives."

Alistair stared at me. For a second, I thought he knew.

Then he exhaled, shaking his head. "Honey, that's just the medicine detoxing your system. You have to be strong."

He stepped closer and squeezed my shoulder. His hand felt heavy, like lead. "Fine. We'll wait a few days until you feel better. But we can't delay this much longer."

"Thank you," I murmured, keeping my head down.

I didn't dare look up. If he saw my eyes, he would know the obedient, broken wife was gone.

At two in the morning, the house was silent. Alistair's heavy snores echoed through the bedroom.

I slipped out from under the duvet, grabbed his phone from the nightstand, and crept down the stairs into the dark kitchen.

I opened my laptop and connected the phone.

I didn't cry. My tears had dried hours ago.

For three straight hours, I worked in complete silence. I took screenshots of every single text between Alistair and Dallas. I downloaded bank statements, wire transfers, and the backend analytics of the $600,000 GoFundMe campaign.

I uploaded everything to an encrypted cloud drive, then emailed duplicates to a secret account I had just created.

I organized the evidence into three color-coded folders: *Affair*, *Financial Fraud*, and *Medical Fraud*.

When the last file finished syncing, I erased the phone's cache, disconnected the cable, and tiptoed back upstairs. I placed the phone back on the nightstand, right next to his watch.

Back in the kitchen, I boiled water and brewed a cup of chamomile tea.

I sat by the window in the dark, watching the streetlights cut through the Manhattan fog. I took a sip.

My hands were perfectly steady.

For three years, I thought I was losing my mind. But sitting there in the quiet, I finally knew the truth.

And I was going to ruin him.
