Chapter 1

The ballroom lights made everything look gold. Chandeliers, champagne, the diamonds on every wrist. I stood near the ice sculpture with a glass I wasn't drinking and watched my husband's hand settle on the small of another woman's back.

Camilla Garza. I knew her name the way you know a splinter under your skin. Twenty-six, legs for days, laughing too loud at something Gideon said into her ear. He leaned close. She tilted her head back. Half the room saw it. Nobody looked away fast enough.

Five years I'd swallowed things. Smiled through them. Something in my chest had been sanded down for so long I thought there was nothing left to cut. But watching his fingers curl against her spine, in front of the Whitfields, the Chens, everyone who mattered — I felt the edge come back.

I walked across the marble floor. My heels didn't shake. That surprised me.

"Gideon." I touched his elbow. "I need a word."

He glanced at me like I was staff interrupting a meeting. But he came, because a scene would cost him more than five minutes. We stepped behind a pillar, half-hidden by a floral arrangement someone had spent a fortune on.

"I want a divorce," I said. Quiet. Clear. I'd practiced the words in my head so many times they didn't even sound like mine anymore.

He didn't look up from his phone right away. When he did, there was a smirk tucked into the corner of his mouth, like I'd told a joke that wasn't quite funny enough.

"Go fix your makeup," he said. "You're embarrassing yourself."

"I mean it."

"You always mean it." He slid the phone into his jacket. "Until you remember who's paying four figures a day to keep your sister's heart beating." He straightened my shoulder strap like he was adjusting a lamp. "Go back to the party, Keilani."

I went back to the party.

I sat at our table with my hands in my lap, and under the tablecloth, out of sight, my fingers found my wedding ring. I rubbed my thumb over the engraving I couldn't see but knew by heart. *I'll never let go.* He'd whispered it on a rooftop over the Brooklyn Bridge, on one knee, five years ago, and I had cried like it was the best sentence anyone had ever said to me.

I realized, sitting there under the chandelier light, that I touched this ring every time I was scared. I'd been doing it for years. I just never noticed how often that was.

---

The apartment was dark when I got home, except for the hallway light I always left on. I'd barely gotten my shoes off when the front door opened without a knock.

Camilla walked in like she owned the marble under her feet. Fendi bag, uncovered shoulders, a set of keys she should never have had swinging from one finger.

"Don't get up," she said, though I hadn't moved. "I just came to see how the wife lives." She looked around the living room, at the Rothko over the fireplace, like she was pricing it. "Cute. Very... furniture-catalog."

"You need to leave."

"Do I?" She smiled, all teeth. "You know what you are to him, right? A placeholder. A nice, quiet charity case he picked up because you were desperate and pretty." She stepped closer. "I'm not going anywhere, sweetheart. I'm the upgrade."

I didn't move. I didn't blink. Something in me had already decided, an hour ago, behind that pillar, that I was done flinching.

That was when the elevator chimed and Gideon walked in, jacket over his arm, and instead of throwing her out, instead of even looking surprised, he crossed the room and stood beside her.

"Camilla," he said, like greeting a colleague. Then, to me, flat and cold: "You want to walk out that door? Fine. Macie's bill this month was forty-one thousand dollars. You want to know what happens to the machines if I stop paying?" He let that hang there. "They get unplugged by morning, Keilani. That simple."

I looked at him for a long moment. Then I turned and walked to the bedroom, and I did not let my face crack until the door was shut behind me.

---

Sunday, I drove out to the facility like always. Same vanilla lotion on the nightstand. Same speaker playing Macie's old playlist, the one full of songs from when she still had a body that moved to music instead of one that machines moved for her.

I rubbed lotion into her hand. Warm from the equipment, soft from years of the same careful ritual. The monitor beeped, steady, patient, endless.

I opened a dance magazine and read the whole article out loud without once looking up.

Because looking up meant looking at her face.

And today, I wasn't sure I could survive that.
