Chapter 4

I didn't confront him.

I walked past Caspian standing in the doorway of that hidden room and went straight to our bedroom. Closed the door. Sat on the edge of the bed with my hands folded in my lap until my breathing evened out.

When he knocked an hour later, I told him I had a headache.

"Can I get you anything?" His voice was careful through the door.

"No. Thank you."

He didn't push. He never pushed.

I lay in the dark that night and stared at the ceiling and thought about the medal under glass. About photographs arranged like a timeline. About letters written in his handwriting to a woman who wasn't his wife.

About five years of patience that now looked like something else entirely.

In the morning, I came to breakfast. Poured coffee. Asked Caspian about his day. He watched me across the table with something cautious in his eyes, but I smiled and the caution faded.

I was good at smiling. I'd had a lot of practice.

The days that followed had a strange, glassy quality. I moved through them carefully. I asked normal questions. Laughed at appropriate moments. Rested my hand on my stomach when he was watching.

And I studied him.

I watched the way he answered his phone and stepped into another room. The way he checked his messages with his screen angled away from me. The way he touched my shoulder in passing—gentle, affectionate, perfectly calibrated.

I looked for the seam between the performance and the person underneath.

I couldn't find one.

Maybe there was no person underneath. Maybe there had never been.

My prenatal appointment was on a Wednesday. Routine checkup. Caspian insisted on coming with me, the way he had for every appointment since I'd told him about the pregnancy.

We sat in the waiting room. His hand rested on my knee. I looked at it and felt nothing.

The nurse called my name. We stood. Caspian's phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen. Something shifted in his expression. "I need to take this. I'll be right back."

"Okay."

He kissed my temple and stepped into the corridor.

The nurse led me to an examination room. Took my blood pressure. Asked the standard questions. I answered automatically. She told me the doctor would be in shortly and left.

I sat on the examination table and looked at the pamphlets on the wall. *Your Third Trimester. What to Expect. Preparing for Delivery.*

Then I heard Caspian's voice through the door.

Not loud. Not trying to be overheard. Just close enough, and the door just slightly ajar.

"The timeline is holding," he said. His tone was clipped. Professional. "Delivery is projected for late September. Cord blood collection is confirmed with the medical team."

A pause. Someone responding on the other end.

"Romina's son is stable for now," Caspian continued. "But the window is narrow. We can't afford delays."

My hand went to the edge of the examination table. Gripped it.

"The original operation achieved exactly what we needed," Caspian said. "Bennett's abandonment. The public sympathy. Her isolation. It gave us the opening."

Another pause.

"No, she doesn't suspect anything. She's—" His voice softened slightly. "She's exactly where we need her to be."

I couldn't hear the rest. There was a rushing sound in my ears like water.

I slid off the examination table. My legs didn't feel steady. I pressed one hand against the wall and the other against my stomach.

*The original operation.*

*Cord blood collection.*

*Romina's son.*

The room tilted. I closed my eyes and forced air into my lungs. One breath. Two.

When I opened them, the walls were still standing. The pamphlets were still on the wall. Everything looked exactly the same.

But it wasn't.

It had never been.

I heard Caspian's footsteps returning. I climbed back onto the examination table. Smoothed my dress. Folded my hands over my stomach.

He opened the door. Smiled at me. "Sorry about that. Work emergency."

"It's fine," I said.

My voice sounded normal. Steady. I was amazed by that.

The doctor came in. Ran through the checkup. Everything was progressing beautifully, she said. The baby was healthy. I was healthy. Right on schedule.

"Any questions?" she asked.

"No," I said. "Thank you."

Caspian held my hand on the drive home. I looked out the window at the city passing by and thought about a warehouse by the water. About hands grabbing me in the dark. About Bennett's face in the hospital doorway.

About Caspian standing at the foot of my bed offering salvation.

*Because it's the right thing to do.*

I'd believed him.

I'd believed all of it.

We had dinner that night. Caspian asked about the appointment. I told him everything the doctor had said. He listened attentively. Smiled. Reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

"I'm so glad everything's going well," he said.

"Me too."

After he went to bed, I sat in the nursery. The one I'd been decorating for weeks. Pale yellow walls. A rocking chair by the window. The mobile with moons turning slowly overhead.

I put my hand on my stomach and felt the small flutter of movement inside. Real. Alive. Mine.

Except it wasn't just mine.

It had never been just mine.

I sat there until the sky outside started turning gray. Then I stood up. Walked to the desk in the corner. Opened my laptop.

I had work to do.
