Chapter 5

The filing came on a Tuesday night.

I was sitting in the rocker in Eiden's room, the lamp on low, reading him the one about the bear who couldn't sleep. He was almost out—his eyelids heavy, his small fist curled against his cheek—when my phone buzzed on the side table. I glanced at the screen. Catherine's name. Then a preview of the email subject line.

*Emergency Custody Motion — Hicks v. Burke.*

I kept reading.

'...and so the bear tried counting stars,' I said, my voice the same as it always was. Soft. Even. The words on the page.

My hand tightened on the book. Just once. Then I let it go.

Eiden's breathing slowed all the way down. I finished the page, closed the book, and sat with him for another minute in the dark. Just listening to him breathe. Just that.

Then I kissed his forehead, pulled the blanket up, and walked to my desk.

I read the motion standing up. *Erratic behavior. Emotional instability. Unfit for primary custody.* His attorney had used the word *volatile* twice. The same careful, clinical language Colson had fed to Gemma over eggs Benedict. A word chosen not because it was true but because it was useful.

I called Catherine.

She picked up on the first ring.

'I saw it,' she said, before I could speak.

'How bad?'

'It's not bad. It's desperate.' I heard her turn a page. 'He has no verified income since you froze his access. No independent residence. And the federal exposure from the financial records means any competent judge is going to look at this motion and see exactly what it is.' A pause. 'This is a pressure tactic, Vienna. He's scared.'

'I know what it is.' I sat down. 'How long?'

'Seventy-two hours to have it dismissed.'

It was dismissed in forty-eight.

I added the filing to the encrypted folder. I added Catherine's timeline note beside it. Then I went to bed and slept four hours and woke up at five and made coffee and sat down to work.

---

The access log notification came the following Monday.

I'd been waiting for it. I'd been waiting for it for two weeks, ever since I confirmed that Raquel still had residual cloud credentials tied to Burke Enterprises' internal systems. An oversight, technically. The kind of thing a distracted CEO might miss.

I had not missed it. I had left it open like a window with a view of a trap.

The log showed the breach at 11:47 PM on a Sunday. Raquel's credentials. The pitch deck folder for the Meridian development contract. Thirty million dollars. The biggest bid Burke Enterprises had put forward in four years.

She'd downloaded the full deck. Sent it somewhere. I didn't need to guess where.

I sat with it for a moment. The coffee was hot. The penthouse was quiet. Down the hall, Eiden was asleep.

I opened a new document.

The real proposal had been taking shape for three weeks. Different partnerships. A revised cost structure. A sustainability component I'd been quietly negotiating with an architecture firm Colson had never heard of because he hadn't been paying attention to the right things. The deck he had was good. The deck I was building was better by a margin that would be visible to anyone in that room who knew what they were looking at.

I did not close the access breach. I left Raquel's credentials exactly where they were.

Let them think they had something.

---

Three nights. That's what it took.

Eiden down by eight. The city outside going quiet by midnight. Me at my desk with black coffee and the encrypted files and the particular stillness of a woman who has already decided how this ends and is just doing the work now.

I finalized the real proposal on the second night. On the third, I called Catherine.

'The presentation is Friday,' I said. 'I need someone in that room.'

'Already arranged.' She didn't ask me to explain. That was why I'd chosen her. 'FBI financial crimes. He'll be in the back. He'll have the access logs and the wire transfer documentation before the first slide.'

'Good.'

'Vienna.' A pause. 'Are you ready for what happens after?'

I touched my mother's bracelet. The gold was warm from my wrist.

Colson had the deck. He had Raquel. He had whatever story he'd been telling himself about how this was going to go—walking into that room, presenting my work with his name on it, winning a contract that would give him leverage, credibility, a lifeline.

He had no idea what was waiting for him.

'Yes,' I said.

I hung up. Opened the final version of the real proposal. Read it once more from the beginning, slowly, the way you read something you've built with your own hands and intend to keep.

Outside, the city was just starting to gray toward morning. Somewhere down the hall, Eiden made a small sound in his sleep and went quiet again.

I closed the laptop. Finished the coffee. And waited for Friday.
