Chapter 1

I arrived home early that evening, my key turning in the lock with its familiar click. The apartment was quiet—too quiet, I realized as I stepped into the foyer. Maverick's shoes were by the door, but the silence felt different. Wrong. I set my bag down on the marble counter and moved toward our bedroom, my heels clicking softly against the hardwood floors.

The bedroom door was slightly ajar. I pushed it open and froze.

A woman's earring lay on the nightstand, catching the late afternoon light. It was delicate, gold with a small pearl—nothing like the bold statement pieces I preferred. The air was thick with unfamiliar perfume, something floral and sweet that made my stomach turn. But it was Maverick's phone, carelessly left unlocked on the bed, that delivered the final blow.

I picked it up, my fingers steady as I opened his messages. The thread with Ariya Rivera stretched back months. 'Can't wait to see you tonight,' she'd written just hours ago. 'Wear that thing I like,' he'd replied. My eyes moved mechanically through the exchanges, noting dates, times, pet names. I felt nothing—or rather, I felt everything coalescing into a cold, hard clarity.

I set the phone back down exactly where I'd found it and walked to the kitchen. The kettle was already on the stove; I'd planned to make tea when I got home. My hands moved through the familiar ritual—filling the kettle, selecting a tea bag, waiting for the water to boil. The normalcy of the action felt surreal against the backdrop of what I'd just discovered.

Maverick appeared in the doorway, his tie loosened, looking annoyed at my early presence. 'You're home,' he said, not a question but an accusation.

'Yes,' I replied, my voice level as I poured hot water over the tea bag. 'I found your phone.'

He didn't even flinch. Instead, he leaned against the counter with casual contempt, arms crossed over his chest. 'So?'

'So you're having an affair.'

'And?' His tone was dismissive, as if I were making a fuss over something trivial. 'We should just be honest with each other, Evie. This marriage doesn't have to be so rigid. We could have an open arrangement. You could do your own thing if you want.'

I stared at him, this man I'd supported through everything, and saw a stranger. There was no guilt in his eyes, no shame—only the mild irritation of someone being inconvenienced. He genuinely believed he was offering me something reasonable.

I said nothing. I set my teacup down carefully, walked past him to the guest bedroom, and locked the door behind me. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I sat on the edge of the bed in the gathering darkness and made my decision.

I would not fall apart. I would not give him the satisfaction of seeing me broken. I would dismantle everything he thought he owned—starting with his father's empire.

The next morning, I rose at my usual time. Coffee at 6:45 a.m., precisely. I dressed with particular care, choosing a crisp white blouse and tailored black pants. I was out the door before Maverick stirred, my routine unbroken.

At the office, I moved through the familiar corridors with practiced efficiency. Emerson Palmer looked up as I passed his desk, his eyes catching mine with that quiet attentiveness I'd always appreciated. 'Good morning, Evie,' he said, his voice warm.

'Good morning,' I replied, and for the first time in days, I meant it.

He studied me for a moment, then nodded slightly. 'I made an extra cup,' he said, gesturing to the second coffee on my desk.

I looked at it, then at him, and felt something shift inside me—not softening, but a kind of alignment. 'Thank you,' I said.

That evening, I opened the small worn notebook I kept in my work bag. I began to write, my hand moving steadily across the page. Dates. Names. Figures. All the details I'd overheard at Ferguson family dinners over the years—the suspicious contracts, the whispered conversations about kickbacks, the political favors exchanged for lucrative development deals.

Three pages filled quickly. I closed the notebook and tucked it back into my bag, a plan already forming in my mind.

I had been noticing the irregularities for years, filing them away as small inconsistencies. Now, I would use them. Maverick thought he could discard me without consequence. He was about to learn how wrong he was.
