Chapter 2

The livestream hit half a million viewers at 9:47 a.m.

I watched the counter tick up from the stairwell between the fourth and fifth floors, my phone screen bright in the dim concrete space. Someone had titled it *Family Begs Surgeon to Save Dying Sister — She Refuses.* The thumbnail was Nataly's face, pale and tear-streaked, backlit by the soft glow of hospital monitors.

I scrolled through the comments without reading them. I didn't need to. I already knew what they said.

The door above me creaked open. Gemma Johnston appeared at the landing, a small canvas bag slung over her shoulder. She looked exactly like what she was — a nurse on break, unremarkable, invisible to anyone who wasn't looking.

"Battery's at ninety-eight percent," she said quietly. "Derek's team is parked in the loading zone. Two inspectors, one federal agent, all waiting on your signal."

I pocketed my phone. "You checked twice?"

"Three times." She set the bag down on the step between us and unzipped it. Inside, a single vial of blood, labeled with my name in Gemma's neat handwriting. "Type A-positive. Completely ordinary. Incompatible with Nataly on every marker that matters."

I picked up the vial, holding it to the light. My name. My supposed blood. The bait.

"If Pierce's system flags this as a match," Gemma said, "we've got him. Live, recorded, federal witnesses standing by."

I looked at her. Gemma had worked at Manhattan Metropolitan for six years. She'd spent three of them documenting Pierce's irregularities in a personal notebook she kept in the same clinical shorthand she used for patient charts. She'd tried raising concerns twice through official channels. Both times, the complaints had been buried by administrators who liked Pierce's reputation more than they liked the truth.

She wasn't doing this for me. She was doing this because she'd been waiting for someone who could make the fight winnable.

"You're sure about this," I said.

She didn't hesitate. "I've been sure for three years."

I slipped the vial into my coat pocket. "Then let's go."

We took separate routes back to the surgical wing. Gemma disappeared into the nurses' station. I walked the long way, past the alcove where Cason had pulled me earlier, past the supply closet, past the janitor who'd stopped his cart to watch the show.

The crowd outside Nataly's room had grown. More phones. More recording lights. A woman in scrubs I didn't recognize whispered something to the man beside her, and they both looked at me.

I kept walking.

Dr. Kylo Pierce stood near the nurses' station, his white coat crisp, his expression arranged into something between concern and clinical authority. He saw me coming and straightened, adjusting his tablet like a man preparing to deliver important news.

"Dr. Howell," he said, loud enough for the hallway to hear. "I'm glad you're here. We need to run an urgent compatibility panel. Your sister's condition has deteriorated, and we need to move quickly."

I stopped in front of him. Behind him, I could see Cason watching from the doorway of Nataly's room, his hand resting on the frame, his face carefully neutral.

"Of course," I said. "I'll provide a sample now."

Pierce's shoulders relaxed, just slightly. He gestured toward the lab intake desk. "This way."

I followed him past the desk, into the small testing alcove where phlebotomy supplies sat lined up in neat rows. He pulled on gloves with practiced efficiency, preparing the needle, the tourniquet, the labeled vial.

"This won't take long," he said.

I held out my arm.

He swabbed the inside of my elbow, wrapped the tourniquet, tapped the vein twice. The needle slid in clean. Blood filled the vial, dark and ordinary.

Except it wasn't mine.

Pierce labeled it carefully, my name in his blocky handwriting, and carried it to the testing station across the room. I watched him scan the barcode, enter the data, feed the sample into the machine that would run the compatibility algorithm he'd rigged weeks ago.

I pulled out my phone. Opened the livestream. The view count had crossed 600,000.

Pierce's machine beeped.

He leaned over the screen, reading the results. His face didn't change, but his hand went still on the edge of the counter, fingers pressing down just a little too hard.

"Well," he said, turning to face me with a smile that looked rehearsed in a mirror. "It's extraordinary, really. You're a perfect match. Tissue compatibility across every major marker. Frankly, Dr. Howell, it's the kind of result we see maybe once in a thousand cases."

I let the silence sit for three seconds.

"That's impressive," I said. "Especially since that sample came from Gemma Johnston. Type A-positive. Incompatible with Nataly on HLA, ABO, and every crossmatch that matters."

Pierce's smile didn't move. But behind his eyes, something fast and cold flickered.

I raised my phone, screen out, showing him the livestream counter. 650,000 viewers.

"They heard that," I said softly. "All of it."

Footsteps echoed in the corridor. Heavy. Deliberate. Derek Bryant stepped into the alcove, federal badge clipped to his belt, two health inspectors flanking him.

"Dr. Pierce," Bryant said. "We're going to need to see your testing protocols. And the pre-ordered surgical instruments logged under an unauthorized nephrectomy scheduled for this afternoon."

Pierce opened his mouth. Closed it. His hand was still pressed to the counter, knuckles gone white.

I walked past him, past Bryant, back into the corridor where the cameras were still recording.

Cason was standing in the hallway now, phone in hand, his face pale.

I met his eyes.

"Your turn," I said.
