Chapter 3

I drove to the clinic on a Tuesday morning. Tate thought I was meeting Sylvia for brunch.

The parking lot looked the same as it had two years ago. Same cracked asphalt. Same faded yellow lines. I'd sat in this exact spot reading a novel while Tate went inside for what he called a "routine physical." He'd been annoyed about it. His company required annual checkups for their executive health plan.

I remembered because he'd come back to the car forty minutes later looking tense. When I asked if everything was okay, he'd said the nurse was incompetent and changed the subject.

Now I understood why.

I didn't go inside. I didn't need to. I'd already done the work online — logged into our shared medical insurance portal, found the appointment in the system, and submitted a records request three days ago. The document had arrived this morning by secure mail. I'd signed for it, set it on the passenger seat, and driven here because I needed to be somewhere that wasn't my house when I opened it.

I tore the envelope. The pages slid out. Clinical letterhead. Tate's name at the top. Date of service. Lab results.

I scanned down to the section marked **Semen Analysis**.

*Volume: 2.1 mL (normal range)*

*pH: 7.4 (normal range)*

*Sperm concentration: 0 million/mL*

*Total sperm count: 0*

*Motility: N/A*

*Morphology: N/A*

Below that, in a separate box:

**Diagnosis: Congenital azoospermia. No viable sperm detected. Condition is permanent and untreatable. Patient advised of infertility status and referred to specialist for consultation. Patient declined follow-up.**

I read it twice. Then a third time. The words didn't change.

Tate Barnes could not father a child. He never could. The heir he was so obsessed with — the legacy he talked about in his sleep, the future he used to justify everything — was biologically impossible.

The baby Violette was carrying wasn't his.

I sat in the car for a long time. The report was still in my hands. My fingers weren't shaking. My breathing was steady. I felt something cold and sharp settle in my chest, like a blade sliding into place.

Then I started the engine and drove to the copy shop.

Two copies. One for the safety deposit box. One for the archive. I filed the original in a manila envelope and locked it in the trunk.

When I got home, Tate was in the kitchen making coffee. He smiled when I walked in.

"How was brunch?"

"Good," I said. "Sylvia says hi."

He kissed my forehead. "I'm glad you got out. You've been so stressed lately."

"I know," I said.

He didn't notice that I didn't smile back.

---

I called Derek Paulson that afternoon. He picked up on the second ring.

"Maeve. What do you need?"

"I need you to find someone," I said. "Kane Dixon. Seattle area. I have a wire transfer record showing fifteen thousand dollars sent from my husband's account to his three weeks ago. I need to know who he is and what his relationship is to a woman named Violette Lane."

There was a pause. Then Derek's voice came back, quieter. "You want surveillance?"

"I want everything," I said. "Photos. Financial records. Phone logs if you can get them. I need to know who this man is and why my husband is sending him money."

"How fast?"

"As fast as you can do it right."

"Give me a week," Derek said. "Maybe less."

"Thank you."

He hesitated. "Maeve — are you okay?"

"I'm fine," I said. "I'll send you the details tonight."

I hung up before he could ask anything else.

---

Sylvia showed up three days later with a bottle of wine and a look on her face that said she was done being patient.

She didn't knock. She had a key. She walked straight into the kitchen, set the bottle on the counter, and crossed her arms.

"Why are you still here?"

I looked up from my laptop. "What?"

"Why are you still in this house? Still cooking his dinners? Still sleeping in his bed? Maeve, you have proof. You have screenshots. You have everything. Why haven't you confronted him?"

I closed the laptop. I stood up and poured us both a glass of wine. I handed her one and sat back down.

"Because confronting him now gives him time," I said.

"Time for what?"

"To spin it. To apologize. To make me the villain for not forgiving him fast enough." I pulled my phone out and opened the archive folder. "I need more than proof of an affair, Sylvia. I need the whole picture."

I slid the phone across the table. She picked it up. I watched her face as she scrolled. The Strava routes. The texts. The wire transfer to Kane Dixon. The sterility report.

When she looked up, her wine glass was still full and untouched.

"He's been lying about everything," she said quietly.

"Yes."

"The baby isn't his."

"No."

"And he's asking you for five hundred thousand dollars."

"Yes."

Sylvia set the phone down. She stared at me. "What are you going to do?"

I picked up my wine glass. I took a slow sip.

"I'm going to give it to him," I said.

Her eyes went wide. "What?"

"Not the money," I said. "The rope."

She didn't say anything for a long time. Then, finally, she nodded.

"Okay," she whispered. "Okay. Tell me what you need."

I smiled. It was the first real smile I'd felt in weeks.

"Just keep being my friend," I said. "That's all."
