Chapter 1

I lit the candles at seven. Two thin white ones in glass holders, the kind that came in a set from West Elm. I set them on either side of the table. The wine was already open. A Malbec. Ashton's favorite. I wore the dress I bought last week. Navy blue, fitted but not tight. The kind of thing you wear when you want someone to notice you remembered what they like.

Seven-thirty came. Then eight. I poured myself a glass and sat down. The chicken would be dry soon but I left it in the oven anyway. I checked my phone. No messages. I called. It rang four times and went to voicemail. I didn't leave one.

By nine I turned off the oven. By ten I blew out the candles because the wax was pooling unevenly and it bothered me. I sat on the couch with my phone in my lap and watched the numbers on the clock change. Midnight arrived quiet and small. Five years. I thought about texting him something sharp but I didn't. I just sat there with my hands folded and my jaw tight and waited.

At two in the morning I was still awake. The city hummed outside. Sirens a few blocks over. A car alarm. I stared at the door and imagined it opening. I imagined what I would say. But the door stayed closed. So I stayed on the couch with the lights off and my dress still on and my heart doing something slow and painful in my chest.

He came home at nine-fifteen the next morning.

I heard his key in the lock. The door swung open and there he was. Ashton Cole. My husband. He looked good. He always looked good. Dark hair still neat. Shirt a little rumpled but in that careless way that works on some men. He smelled like cologne. Cheap cologne. The kind that comes in a bottle shaped like a grenade. Not the one I bought him last Christmas.

He walked past the table. Past the dried-out chicken still sitting on the counter in its pan. Past me standing in the kitchen doorway in yesterday's dress. He didn't look at any of it. He stopped in the center of the living room and turned around. Then he dropped to one knee.

For half a second my brain misfired. I thought—absurdly—that he was about to apologize. That he had some grand gesture planned. Some explanation that would make the last fourteen hours make sense.

But Ashton wasn't looking at me like a man who was sorry. He was looking at me like a man who had already made a decision and was just waiting for me to catch up.

"Marley," he said. His voice was calm. Steady. Like he was delivering a presentation. "I need to be honest with you. I've met someone. Her name is Lily. And she's pregnant."

I didn't move. I didn't blink. I just stood there with my hands at my sides and let the words hit me one at a time. Met someone. Lily. Pregnant.

"I didn't plan this," he continued. He tilted his head slightly. Almost apologetic. Almost. "But it happened. And I can't ignore it. She needs me. The baby needs me. So I'm asking you—cleanly, respectfully—for a divorce."

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. He took that as permission to keep talking.

"I'll let you leave with your dignity," he said. He actually smiled a little. Like he was doing me a favor. "No drama. No lawyers dragging this out. You pack your things, we file the papers, and we both move on. I think that's fair."

Fair.

I was still trying to form a sentence when I heard heels in the hallway. Sharp. Deliberate. The door was still open. I turned and saw her.

Patricia Cole. Ashton's mother. She swept in like she owned the place. And maybe she thought she did. She was dressed in cream and pearls. Her hair was perfect. She carried a Louis Vuitton tote bag over one arm. She didn't greet me. She didn't even look at me. She walked straight to the shelf where I kept my jewelry box and opened it.

"Mom," Ashton said. Not a protest. Just acknowledgment.

Patricia lifted my grandmother's bracelet out of the box. The silver one with the clasp that stuck. She held it up to the light, examined it, then dropped it into her tote bag.

"For the new woman," she said. Her voice was clipped. Efficient. "She'll need proper accessories."

I finally found my voice. "That's mine."

Patricia didn't pause. She picked up the earrings Ashton gave me on our second anniversary. Then the necklace I bought myself after my first promotion. One by one. Into the bag.

"You won't need these anymore," she said. She moved to my desk. To the small safe I kept in the bottom drawer. I watched her pull it out and set it on the floor. She looked at Ashton. "Code?"

He rattled off six numbers. My birthday. She punched them in. The safe opened. She pulled out the envelope with my savings bonds. The cash I kept for emergencies. My passport. She took the bonds and the cash. Left the passport on the floor.

"Mom," I said. My voice came out thin. "You can't—"

"Marley." Ashton stood up. He brushed off his knee. "Let's not make this ugly. You're going to leave anyway. This just makes it easier."

Patricia zipped the tote bag closed. She finally looked at me. Her eyes were cold. Satisfied.

"Pack one suitcase," she said. "Leave the keys on the counter. Be grateful we're being civil about this."

I stood in the center of my own living room. The apartment I helped pay for. The furniture I picked out. The life I built. I watched my jewelry disappear into a designer bag. I watched my husband stand there with his hands in his pockets. I watched his mother smile.

And I felt something inside me go very quiet. Very still. Very cold.
