Chapter 1

It was eleven at night. Three weeks after my emergency C-section, my lower stomach still burned with every single step. I sat at the marble kitchen island in our downtown Seattle condo, listening to the hum of the refrigerator. Lucia was finally asleep in her bassinet down the hall.

I was starving. I pulled the family iPad toward me to order some soup. Everett’s DoorDash account was still logged in.

I clicked on the profile icon to switch cards. His recent order history opened up.

Unit 1703.

I stared at the screen. That was our building. Exactly five floors directly above us.

The orders stretched back for months. High-end lactation soups. Postpartum healing teas. Organic recovery meal kits.

The latest order had arrived just two hours ago. The delivery instruction under Everett's name made my stomach drop: *“Knock softly, baby just fell asleep.”*

My fingers went cold against the glass. I took screenshots with my phone, cleared the browser history, and set the iPad down in the exact spot I found it. That night, I lay flat on my back in bed, staring at the dark ceiling. Faint footsteps creaked from the floor above. I had always assumed it was just noisy neighbors. It wasn't.

The next night, Everett went to sleep in the guest room again. He told me he was doing it so he wouldn't disturb my rest. He acted like the perfect, considerate husband.

At midnight, I slipped down the hallway on bare feet. A thin strip of light cut across the dark floor beneath his door.

I pressed my ear against the wood. His voice came through, soft and warm. It was the exact same tender tone he used when he first told me he loved me.

“He’s getting so big,” Everett whispered. He paused, chuckling quietly. “Yeah, Mom brought the milk over this morning. Good stuff.”

My knees gave out. I slid down the wall until I was sitting flat on the hallway carpet. The cold baseboard bit into my back. I sat there in the dark for twenty minutes, memorizing every single word.

I didn’t cry. Not a single tear fell.

The next morning, I opened our freezer. For three weeks, I had pumped every three hours around the clock, bleeding through the plastic flanges just to give Lucia enough. There should have been thirty bags stored away.

There were only four.

My mother-in-law, Linda, had been taking the rest every morning, claiming she was putting them in the deep freezer. She wasn't.

Two days later, Linda came by our condo. She offered to take Lucia out in the stroller for some fresh air.

“You look so tired, dear,” Linda said with a sweet smile, patting my shoulder. “Get some sleep.”

The moment the elevator doors closed behind them, I stepped into the second elevator. My legs were shaking, but I pressed the button for the 17th floor anyway.

The hallway upstairs looked just like mine. Quiet, modern, and expensive. I walked down the hall and stopped right in front of unit 1703.

Inside, a young woman was talking.

“Say hi to Daddy… Daddy’s coming home soon.”

A baby giggled. A loud, healthy boy's laugh.

I looked down at the floor. In front of the door was a woven welcome mat with a large, cursive letter monogrammed in black: *C*. Campbell.

I raised my phone and took two clear photos. On the elevator ride back down, I caught my reflection in the mirrored wall. I looked pale, gaunt, and completely drained. I was still wearing my gray sweatpants and a medical belly band. But my eyes were stone cold.

That night, while Everett was in the shower, I went into our walk-in closet. Weeks ago, I had noticed an old phone tucked into the inside pocket of his heavy winter coat.

I pulled it out and turned it on.

It opened straight to a group chat. The thread was named *Family Planning*.

The members were Everett, Linda, and a woman named Kali Morales.

The messages went back months.

Linda: *“The boy is thriving. He looks just like Everett did as a baby.”*

Kali: *“When can we start the transition? I’m tired of hiding up here.”*

Everett: *“After the one-month celebration. We’ll give Thea some money and she’ll go quietly. She’s not the type to make a scene.”*

Linda: *“Good. Lucia can visit on weekends. It’s better for everyone.”*

They weren't just having an affair. They were replacing my daughter and me.

I took photos of every single text. My hands didn't shake at all.

The next morning, I grabbed a bottle of red food coloring from the pantry. Using a toothpick, I dabbed a tiny, almost invisible red dot under the rim of each pumped milk bottle cap.

At nine sharp, Linda unlocked our front door.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” she beamed, holding up her little cooler bag. “I’ll get these organized for the freezer.”

She took the six bottles I had pumped overnight.

At two that afternoon, I sent a courier to deliver a bouquet of yellow roses to unit 1703 under a fake name. I stood around the corner by the stairwell door.

The courier knocked. The door swung open.

A young woman answered. Kali Morales. She looked fresh, pretty, and completely rested.

Behind her, on the kitchen counter, sat my bottles. My white caps with the tiny red dots, lined up right next to an electric bottle warmer.

My breast milk. Stolen from my body to feed another woman’s baby.

I slipped down the stairwell, walked into my own apartment, and locked the door. My knees hit the bathroom floor.

I sat there in the dark for ten straight minutes without moving.

Then I stood up, turned on the faucet, and splashed cold water over my face. I looked at myself in the mirror, pulled out my phone, and called Adaline Perry.
