My Husband Sold Our Marriage to Train an AI

Fifteen years of shared life were stripped down to cold data points when Oliver handed their most private moments to Heartline, an AI romance app built on stolen intimacy. Pet names whispered in the dark, bitter quarrels, even a voice note from her lowest point—all became raw material for a machine learning her love story. With journalist Theo Mercer digging into the betrayal, she faces the devastating truth: the man who swore to cherish her believed their marriage was his to own. Now she must decide how to reclaim what was never his to take.

Chapter 2

Amelia's POV

I slammed the laptop shut. The hinge snapped like a dry bone, missing Oliver's hovering fingers by a fraction of an inch.

"Three questions," I said, grabbing a legal pad and a black pen from my desk drawer. "Do not touch that machine. You answer me right now, and I write down exactly what you say."

Oliver retracted his hand, straightening his posture. He smoothed the lapels of his suit jacket, his face a mask of corporate calm. "You are overreacting."

"What exactly did you sell?" I asked, poising the pen over the yellow paper.

"I licensed behavioral data," he said, his tone even and practiced.

"Specify."

He sighed, adjusting his cuffs, refusing to meet my eyes. "Text logs. Audio files. The duration of our silences after arguments. The sequence of our reconciliations. The unmailed letters in the archive."

I wrote his words verbatim. The scratch of the nib filled the quiet room. "You gave them the letters I wrote to my sister before she died?"

"I gave them a data set," Oliver corrected. "They scan for syntax patterns, not personal gossip."

"Syntax patterns," I echoed, keeping my eyes on the page. "You mean the way I apologize when I am afraid you will leave? The way I ask for space?"

"It teaches the AI pacing," he said.

"To whom?"

"Heartline Global."

"Why hide it?" I asked, pressing the pen down until the ink pooled into a dark dot on the yellow line.

"Because they anonymized it," he insisted, taking a step toward the desk. "They scrubbed the names, Millie. It is just raw emotional mapping. No one knows it belongs to us."

I stopped writing and looked up. "Do not use a nickname you sold to placate me, Oliver."

He flinched at his full name. "We are partners. I made a financial decision for our future."

I reopened the laptop, ignoring his protest, and clicked the second attachment in the PDF. It was an audio file labeled Grief Bonding Sample 09.

I hit play.

The tinny speakers broadcasted a sound I had spent nine years trying to bury. The rhythmic, mechanical hum of the monitors in St Thomas' Hospital. My own ragged, uneven breathing, captured on his phone microphone while I waited for the ultrasound results. Then, Oliver's voice, younger, trembling with a fear I used to find beautiful.

"Count the blue lights overhead, count until your breath comes back. You will navigate this dark water, my north star."

I paused the track. The silence in my office felt suffocating, heavy with the ghosts of that sterile room.

"Look at the margin notes," I told him, pointing a shaking finger at the document. "High trust building sample. Female retention increased by twenty-three percent."

Oliver stepped closer, lifting a hand toward my shoulder. "Look at me. Count the lights."

He was using the exact cadence. Trying to trigger the same comfort algorithm he had just sold.

I scrambled backward, my spine hitting the edge of the wooden sideboard. "Do not say that to me."

"Amelia, I was just trying to calm you down."

"That phrase cannot save me anymore," I said, my voice rising, vibrating against my ribs. "You turned the worst day of my life into a product feature for eight million strangers."

"They do not know it is you!"

"I know it is me!" I gripped the edge of the wood, my knuckles turning white. "I know my dead child is a metric for your female retention rate. You took our grief and optimized it."

"I gave it purpose!" Oliver shouted, his composure finally cracking. "You sat in this office for three years staring at a blank wall after the hospital. I found a way to make that pain useful."

"Useful for your offshore account," I shot back.

"They paid six hundred thousand pounds," Oliver countered, his tone hardening into defense. He dropped his hand, abandoning the comforting husband routine. "That clears the mortgage. It protects us when your book sales dip. The equity guarantees an early retirement."

"My book sales paid for your master's degree," I reminded him. "My book sales bought this house while you were doing unpaid internships."

"And now I am providing the stability," he argued.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and opened our banking app. I scrolled through the joint account ledger, holding the bright screen up to his face.

"Eighteen months," I said. "Show me one deposit."

Oliver looked away from the glaring screen. "It is in a holding account."

"An offshore holding account."

"I was waiting for the IPO," he said, his jaw tight. "I wanted to surprise you."

"A surprise," I repeated, dropping my arm. "A surprise does not require forging my consent on a blind data migration form. A surprise does not strip-mine my miscarriages for capital."

He pulled out his phone, tapping the screen aggressively. "Fine. You want control? I will wire half the funds to your personal account right now. Three hundred thousand. Clean and clear."

"I do not want a payout from a contract violation," I snapped. "I want a list. Every Heartline executive you spoke to. Every meeting you attended. Write it down."

Oliver pocketed his device, his expression shifting from defensive to hostile. "Are you trying to ruin my career?"

"You ruined my understanding of our entire marriage," I said. "You monitored me."

He let out a short, cynical laugh. "Your understanding? You think you built this life all by yourself? Do you really believe those bestselling novels are entirely your genius?"

I stared at him. The air in the room turned freezing. "What did you just say?"

"I read every terrible first draft," Oliver said, pacing the length of the rug. "I fed you the dialogue when your characters sounded wooden. When you could not figure out why the male lead in your third book stayed, I gave you the reason. I gave you the words. I held you together when you broke down, and I taught you how to believe in a happy ending."

"You gave me one line," I said.

"I built your emotional vocabulary, Amelia," he insisted, stopping his pacing to face me. His chest heaved slightly. "Heartline users did not fall in love with your grief. They fell in love with my emotional intuition. The intuition I spent fifteen years refining on you. I finally let the world hear what I have been doing all along."

He was not defending a privacy breach anymore. He was claiming authorship of my talent, my empathy, my success.

I pressed the pen back onto the legal pad. My hand shook, but I forced my grip tight.

Oliver watched my fingers clutch the plastic barrel. He leaned across the desk, his shadow falling over the paper.

"I did not sell you, Amelia," he said quietly. "I sold the version of me that taught you how to write romance."

I pressed down hard. The metal nib snapped against the desk, ripping through the yellow paper and leaving a jagged, permanent slash of black ink across the page.
