Chapter 4

Federal Plaza looked like every government building I'd ever seen. Gray concrete. Metal detectors. American flags hanging limp in the still air.

I walked through the front doors carrying a banker's box. Heavy. Full of Grandfather's life's work. His final masterpiece.

Security stopped me. I gave them Diana Mercer's name. They made a call. Nodded. Waved me through.

An elevator. Fluorescent lights. The box pressed against my ribs.

Eighth floor. The doors opened onto a hallway lined with office doors. Names on plaques. Titles I didn't read.

Diana Mercer stood waiting. Tall. Sharp suit. Hair pulled back. She looked exactly like her voice sounded on the phone. No-nonsense. Direct.

"Mrs. Cruz." She extended her hand.

I shook it. Her grip was firm. "Just Isabela."

"This way."

She led me into a conference room. White walls. Long table. Windows overlooking the city. I set the box down.

Diana sat across from me. Opened a notebook. Clicked a pen. "Before we begin, I need to confirm a few things. You understand that anything you tell me today could be used in a federal investigation?"

"Yes."

"And you're here voluntarily?"

"Yes."

She nodded. "Good. Now. Tell me about the painting."

I opened the box. Started laying documents on the table. One by one. Provenance records. Authentication certificates. Grandfather's handwritten confession.

"My grandfather painted a forgery three years ago," I said. "He replaced the original with his copy. The real painting is in London. In the care of Luciano Vasquez. My husband sold the forgery to a buyer through black-market dealers. He thought it was real."

Diana picked up Grandfather's confession letter. Read it. Her eyes moved faster and faster down the page.

She set it down. Looked at me. "Do you have proof that your husband knew what he was doing? That he intended to commit fraud?"

I pulled out the next folder. Bank statements. Highlighted in yellow. "These show him transferring Cruz estate funds into offshore accounts. Starting two years ago. Before my grandfather died."

Another folder. Emails. "These are communications between my husband and art dealers. Discussing the sale. The price. How to move the painting without alerting authorities."

Another folder. Photographs. "These are surveillance images. My husband meeting with dealers outside a warehouse in Brooklyn. Three weeks before the sale."

Diana spread the photographs across the table. Studied them. "Where did you get these?"

"My grandfather had security cameras installed throughout the brownstone. Hidden. Westin didn't know about them. Neither did I until I read Grandfather's letter."

I pulled out the USB drive. Set it in front of her. "This contains footage from those cameras. Hours of it. Westin removing the painting from the wall. Wrapping it. Loading it into a car. All of it timestamped."

Diana picked up the drive. Turned it over in her hand. She looked at me. Really looked. "This is one of the most comprehensive private evidence packages I've ever seen."

"My grandfather was a very thorough man," I said. "So am I."

She opened her laptop. Inserted the drive. Started watching.

I sat there. Silent. Watching her watch the footage.

Her expression didn't change. But her fingers tightened on the edge of the laptop.

After ten minutes, she stopped the video. Closed the laptop. Looked at me.

"We can arrest him," she said. "Federal art fraud. Embezzlement. Conspiracy. He's looking at twenty years minimum."

Something cold settled deeper in my chest. "When?"

"We need to coordinate with the U.S. Attorney's office. Build the case file. Interview witnesses. Probably a few weeks—"

"No." My voice came out flat. Hard. "New Year's Day."

Diana blinked. "That's three days from now."

"He's throwing a gala tomorrow night. New Year's Eve. At The Plaza. Celebrating his victory. Announcing his engagement to his mistress. The woman he's been sleeping with while stealing my family's fortune." I leaned forward. "I want him arrested the next day. While the champagne is still warm. While he still thinks he won."

Diana studied me. "You want maximum impact."

"I want justice."

She was quiet for a long moment. Then she nodded. "I'll make it happen. But I need you to be prepared. This will be public. Very public. The media will cover it. Your life will be exposed."

"Good," I said. "Let them see what he did. Let everyone know."

Diana closed her notebook. Stood. Extended her hand again. "We'll be in touch. Don't contact your husband. Don't go to the brownstone. Stay somewhere safe."

I shook her hand. "I will."

I left the box with her. Walked back through the hallway. Down the elevator. Out into the cold.

The sun was setting. The city glowed orange and pink.

I pulled out my phone. Checked Instagram.

Zara's latest post. Uploaded an hour ago. Her in the Cruz brownstone library. My library. Holding a book. Caption: *Cozy winter reading 📚✨*

I closed the app. Didn't react.

My phone buzzed. Text from Luciano Vasquez. *Landed in New York. See you tomorrow at the Met. 10 AM.*

I typed back. *I'll be there.*

Another buzz. Unknown number. I opened it.

*You're invited to ring in the New Year at The Plaza Hotel. Hosted by Westin Powell and Zara Dixon. Black tie. Champagne. Celebration. December 31st, 9 PM.*

I stared at the message. At Westin's name next to hers.

I deleted it.

Walked back toward my hotel. The streets filled with people. Tourists. Families. Everyone getting ready for tomorrow night. For the biggest party of the year.

I thought about Westin in his tuxedo. Zara in her gown. Champagne towers. Orchestra music. Speeches about success and new beginnings.

I thought about January first. Federal agents. Handcuffs. Cameras.

I didn't smile. But something shifted in my chest. Something sharp. Something ready.

Two more days.

Then the whole world would see what Westin Powell really was.

And I would be the one who showed them.
