Chapter 2

I sat on the hotel bed until the sky turned gray. Christmas morning. The city woke up outside my window. Sirens. Garbage trucks. Voices on the street below.

I still wore my coat. My fingers were numb. Not from cold. From something else.

The envelope sat on the pillow. Red wax seal. My grandfather's handwriting.

I picked it up. Turned it over. The wax felt smooth under my thumb. The Cruz family crest pressed into it. A lion holding a paintbrush. Grandfather designed it himself when he was young. He said art was our weapon. Our shield.

I broke the seal.

The wax cracked. Fell onto the bedspread in pieces.

I pulled out the letter. Heavy paper. The kind Grandfather special-ordered from Italy. His handwriting covered the page. Neat. Precise. Like his brushstrokes.

*My darling girl—*

*If you are reading this, then the wolf has finally shown his teeth.*

I stopped breathing.

*Do not weep. Everything he thinks he has stolen is smoke. The real treasure is exactly where it has always been — waiting for you, and only you.*

*He sold a ghost, Isabela. A beautiful ghost that I painted with my own hands. The Garden at Twilight hangs safe in London, in the care of my oldest friend. Your husband is a thief. But he is not a very clever one.*

*I have left you three things:*

*First — a key to safety deposit box 447 at First National on Madison Avenue. Inside you will find documents. Provenance records. My confession. Video testimony. Everything you need.*

*Second — coordinates to the vault beneath the brownstone's east wing. The real collection is there. He never knew it existed.*

*Third — the name Luciano Vasquez. Call him. He has been waiting for you.*

*I am sorry I could not tell you while I lived. You loved him too much. You would not have believed me. So I built you a trap instead. A perfect trap. Now spring it.*

*You are a Cruz. We do not break. We sharpen.*

*All my love,*

*Grandfather*

I read it again. Then again. Three times total.

My hands stopped shaking.

Something cold settled in my chest. Something with edges.

I set the letter down. Reached into the suitcase. Found Grandfather's watch. The vintage one with the leather strap. He wore it every day for forty years. I fastened it around my wrist. Too big. It slid down toward my hand.

I didn't adjust it.

I stood up. Walked to the window. Looked out at the city.

Snow covered the sidewalks. People walked past carrying shopping bags. Wearing Santa hats. Smiling.

I pressed my palm against the glass. Cold seeped through.

Westin thought he won. He thought I was broken. Thrown away. Erased.

He was wrong.

I pulled out my phone. Searched for Luciano Vasquez. Found him immediately. International art collector. Based in London. Close friend of Edmund Cruz. There were photos of them together at gallery openings. Auction houses. Museum galas.

I found his office number. Looked at the clock. Seven AM in New York. Noon in London.

I dialed.

It rang twice.

"Vasquez Gallery," a woman answered. British accent. Professional.

"I need to speak with Luciano Vasquez," I said. My voice sounded strange. Flat. "Tell him Isabela Cruz is calling."

A pause. "One moment please."

Silence. Then a click.

"Isabela." A man's voice. Deep. Warm. Sad. "I have been waiting for your call."

I closed my eyes. "You knew."

"Edmund told me everything three years ago. He made me promise to wait. To let you find me yourself."

"The painting—"

"Is here. Safe. Authenticated. Ready."

I traced the rim of the hotel coffee cup on the nightstand. Around and around. "What do I do?"

"You come to London. Or I come to New York. We make a plan. And then we destroy him."

"When?"

"Whenever you are ready."

I looked at the letter on the bed. At Grandfather's handwriting. At the words *we do not break, we sharpen.*

"I'm ready now."

"Then I will be on a plane tonight. Meet me at the Metropolitan Museum. Day after tomorrow. Ten AM. East Gallery."

"Okay."

"Isabela—" He paused. "Your grandfather loved you very much. Everything he did was for you."

My throat tightened. I didn't answer.

"I will see you soon," he said. Then he hung up.

I set the phone down. Sat on the bed. Stared at nothing.

My phone buzzed. A notification. Instagram.

I shouldn't have looked. But I did.

Zara Dixon's account. A new post. Uploaded twenty minutes ago.

A photo of her in the Cruz brownstone living room. My living room. She wore a white silk robe. Holding a champagne glass. Smiling at the camera. Behind her — the walls were different. The paintings were gone. Replaced with modern art. Ugly geometric shapes. Bright colors.

The caption: *New year, new me, new house 💅*

I zoomed in. She wore a necklace. Emerald and gold. Antique setting.

My grandmother's necklace.

I set the phone down. Carefully. Like it might explode.

I stood up. Walked to the bathroom. Turned on the light. Looked at myself in the mirror.

I looked like a ghost. Pale. Hollow-eyed. Hair tangled. Still wearing yesterday's clothes.

I turned on the shower. Stripped off my coat. My dress. Stepped under the water.

It was scalding hot. I didn't adjust it.

I stood there until my skin turned red. Until I couldn't tell if I was shaking from heat or something else.

I got out. Dried off. Put on clean clothes from the suitcase. Jeans. A sweater. Boots.

I looked at myself again. Better. Almost human.

I picked up Grandfather's letter. Folded it carefully. Put it in my purse.

Then I left the hotel room. Took the elevator down. Walked out into Christmas morning in Manhattan.

The snow had stopped. The sky was bright. Clear. Cold.

I had two days until I met Luciano Vasquez. Two days to prepare.

I walked toward Madison Avenue. Toward First National Bank. Toward safety deposit box 447.

Toward everything Westin didn't know existed.

Behind me, the city moved on. Ahead of me, something else waited.

I didn't look back.
