My Husband Slapped Me Until My Billionaire Family Arrived

Eight years ago, Nora Whitmore walked away from her billionaire family, selling her grandmother’s jewels to build Caleb Doyle’s future. But devotion curdled into nightmare: a public slap, his dismissal of their bullied son Jamie’s cries, and a locked room after his boss’s groping. In desperation, she summoned the Whitmores. By noon, a black convoy descended, and her abusers discovered her name could topple dynasties. Yet Caleb and the Vales plot a final, livestreamed strike using Jamie’s broken robot—a battle where bloodlines and secrets collide.

Chapter 2

I didn't take the roses.

Caleb stepped past me anyway and set them on the counter. Then he opened the freezer, wrapped a bag of frozen peas in a dish towel, and pressed it to my cheek.

"Hold still," he said.

The cold bit into the bruise. I didn't move.

"Nora, listen to me." He tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. "That slap wasn't real. It was for Marcus. You saw his face. If I'd taken your side, I'd be cleaning out my desk tomorrow."

"It felt real."

"I barely touched you."

"I tasted blood, Caleb."

He sighed, like I was being difficult on purpose. "Once the promotion goes through, everything changes. Six months, tops. I'll pull Jamie out of Westbridge and put him somewhere better. Somewhere the Vales can't touch him."

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a long velvet box. Inside was a thin gold chain with a tiny diamond.

"I saw it and thought of you."

I looked at the necklace. Then I looked at the couch, where Jamie's sneaker had fallen off his foot in his sleep.

I put the peas down, picked up the first-aid kit, and walked away.

---

Jamie stirred when I knelt beside him. His lip had crusted over, but the cut had pulled open again.

"Shh. It's just Mommy."

I dabbed at it with a fresh cotton ball. He flinched and held on to my wrist.

Behind me, Caleb's footsteps came closer.

"So that's it? You're giving me the silent treatment?"

I unscrewed the antibiotic cream.

"Nora. I'm talking to you."

I squeezed a dot onto my fingertip.

A glass shattered against the kitchen tile.

Jamie jolted awake. I covered his ears with both hands.

"You don't understand how the real world works!" Caleb's voice filled the whole house. "Who pays the mortgage? Who pays for the car, the groceries, that school you were so excited about? Me. Every cent. And all I needed from you was one sentence. One! Swallow your pride for thirty seconds. Was that too much?"

I stood up slowly.

"Our son was beaten in a bathroom. And you want me to swallow it."

"Kids fight!"

"He made him bark like a dog."

Caleb's jaw worked. For a moment, I thought something would crack open in him.

Then I saw his eyes shift past me, toward the stairs.

Jamie had slipped off the couch. He was crouched on the third step, gripping the railing, his face white.

Caleb pointed at him. "You see? Look at him. Hiding. This is why it happens to him. He's soft. You've made him soft. If he'd hit that kid back even once, none of this would've happened."

Jamie's chin trembled. He didn't make a sound.

I crossed the room and stood in front of the stairs. I didn't say anything. I just stood there, between my husband and my son, with my arms at my sides.

Caleb stared at me. His nostrils flared.

"Move."

"No."

That word again. It seemed to hit him harder the second time.

He grabbed his keys off the counter so roughly the bowl skidded across the granite. "Fine. I'll stay at the Marriott. Call me when you've calmed down and remembered who keeps a roof over your head."

The front door slammed. The roses fell over on the counter.

---

I carried Jamie up to my bed. He curled into my chest, and I held him until his breathing evened out.

Then I cried. Quietly, into his hair, for a long time.

Around two in the morning, I picked up my phone. I scrolled past every name I knew to one I hadn't touched in eight years. *Mom.*

My thumb hovered for a full minute.

It rang twice.

"Hello?"

Her voice hadn't changed at all. I pressed my fist against my mouth.

"Mom. It's Nora."

Silence. Then a sound I'd never heard my mother make, a ragged, broken sob.

"Nora? Oh God. Oh, sweetheart. Sebastian! Sebastian, wake up, it's her!"

Muffled movement. Then my father's voice, deep and steady.

"Nora. Are you hurt?"

Not *why are you calling*. Not *after all this time*.

"Caleb hit me." The words came out flat. "In front of the whole school. And Jamie... a boy beat him, Dad. And everyone protected the boy."

There was a long pause. I heard my mother crying in the background.

"Where are you right now?"

"Home."

"Stay there. We'll be there before noon tomorrow."

"Dad, you don't have to—"

"Before noon," he repeated.

I wiped my face with my sleeve. "I'm sorry. For everything I said back then. For choosing him. You were right about him, and I hated you for it. And I haven't been happy. Not for a long time."

"Nora." My mother had taken the phone back. Her voice was thick but firm. "We're not talking about any of that now. Lock your doors. Keep Jamie close. That's all you need to do."

"Okay."

"We love you, baby. We never stopped."

---

I must have fallen asleep around five.

At ten, the front door opened downstairs.

I hurried to the landing. Caleb stood in the entryway, freshly shaved, wearing a pressed blue shirt. For one second, I thought maybe he'd spent the night thinking. Maybe he'd come to apologize.

Then Marcus Vale stepped in behind him.

And behind Marcus, chewing gum, was Leo.

Jamie had come out of the bedroom. He saw Leo and backed into my legs.

"Change of plans," Caleb said brightly. "Lunch instead of dinner. Marcus has a flight tonight." He looked up at me. "There's chicken in the fridge. And Jamie's going to apologize to Leo for the trouble he caused yesterday. Right, buddy?"

Jamie's fingers dug into my thigh.

Marcus didn't wait to be invited further in. He wandered into the living room, hands in his pockets, studying everything.

"Cozy." He ran a finger along the mantel and checked it for dust. "Laminate floors. Bold choice. The kitchen could use opening up, though. Feels a bit cramped for a family."

"Great eye," Caleb said. "We've been talking about a remodel."

We hadn't.

Marcus turned. His gaze traveled up the stairs and settled on me. He didn't look away. He looked for so long that the skin on my arms prickled, and his mouth curved, just slightly.

"Mrs. Doyle. Nice to see you again. Under calmer circumstances."

I said nothing.

In the dining room, Caleb hurried ahead of him and pulled out the chair at the head of the table. His chair. The one he'd never let anyone else sit in.

"Please, Marcus. Make yourself at home."

---

I chopped onions so I wouldn't have to look at anyone.

Through the window, I watched Caleb lead both boys into the backyard. Jamie walked stiffly, several feet away from Leo.

The kitchen floor creaked behind me.

I smelled expensive cologne before I felt him. Marcus stood so close that his chest nearly touched my back. His hand rested on the counter beside my hip, boxing me in.

His breath brushed my ear.

"Your husband's future," he murmured, "is in my hands now."
