Chapter 4

The Plaza ballroom smelled like white lilies and old money. Three hundred people in black tie, waiters moving through them like fish through coral, and me in deep burgundy silk near the stage, going over my remarks one last time in my head even though I'd had them memorized for a week.

I saw her before Hudson did. Blush cashmere, hair loose the way it never was in his baby pictures with her, and a cat carrier — actual leather, actual gold hardware — swinging gently from one hand like an accessory instead of an animal. Marmalade's ginger face pressed against the mesh window.

She'd come on a Griffin family seat. I found that out later. Hudson had put her name on the list himself.

He was across the room in his tux, and when he saw her, something in his face opened up — pink at the cheeks, a smile he didn't know he was wearing. His hand drifted toward his jacket pocket. Toward the inhaler he keeps there now like a security blanket.

Fallon crossed the floor slowly, letting people look at her. That's a skill. Most people rush when they're nervous. She'd learned to do the opposite.

She stopped a foot from me. The carrier swung. The mesh brushed the hem of my gown — not a graze, a full drag, ginger fur catching in burgundy silk.

"Oh — I'm so sorry," she said, voice already trembling at the edges, already performing for the three photographers who'd turned toward us like sunflowers. "He just loves to say hello. I hope that's — is that all right?"

"It's fine," I said.

"He's rescued," she added, to no one, to everyone. "People forget these little souls need saving too."

I looked at her the way I look at a balance sheet with a number that doesn't add up. Then I walked to the stage.

The microphone came on with a soft click. I let the room settle before I spoke, the way I always do — silence is a kind of leverage.

"Thank you all for being here tonight," I said. "The Crawford Foundation has spent eleven years funding medical research in this city. Tonight I'm proud to announce a hundred-million-dollar commitment to establish the Crawford Allergy and Asthma Intervention Center — a facility dedicated to treating exactly the kind of severe, life-threatening reactions that too many families manage alone, in the dark, without resources."

Applause. Warm, immediate, the kind that comes before people even understand what they're clapping for.

I waited for it to fade.

"And because that mission doesn't end with hospital walls," I continued, "the Foundation will also be underwriting a citywide licensing audit of unregistered animal rescue and boarding operations. Compassion is wonderful. But compassion without a license is just a business someone forgot to register — and unregistered animals in unregulated spaces are exactly the kind of unmanaged exposure that puts patients like the ones this Center will serve directly at risk."

I didn't look at Fallon. I didn't have to. I heard the applause pick back up, louder this time, because nobody in that room needed it explained to them what I was talking about. Money understands money. And everyone in that ballroom understood, in that moment, exactly what kind of accessory had just walked through their gala in a leather carrier.

I found her reflection in the gold-leaf mirror behind the podium. Her smile hadn't dropped. It had frozen — a photograph of a smile, held a beat too long, the eyes gone somewhere else entirely.

Hudson wasn't smiling anymore either.

---

Seventy-two hours later, Priya sent me four photographs and a two-line summary. City inspectors, a padlock, a chain-link gate in Bushwick with a laminated notice zip-tied to it. *NO VALID SHELTER LICENSE. INTAKE RECORDS INCOMPLETE. VETERINARY FILINGS NON-COMPLIANT.* Animal control had removed eleven cats for evaluation. Velvet Paws Wellness LLC's donor page displayed a single line in red: *Fundraising temporarily suspended pending review.*

I read it once at my desk, coffee going cold beside the keyboard, and felt nothing that needed managing. It wasn't satisfaction. It was closer to the feeling of watching a report reconcile — numbers finally sitting where they belonged.

Priya's text came in a moment later. *She called Hudson from a payphone outside the building. My contact at the precinct says she was crying. Said, quote, 'Valerie just declared war.'*

I set the phone face-down on the desk.

I hadn't declared anything.

I'd simply followed the paper — the way I always do, the way I taught Priya to do, the way I built an entire company on doing — until the paper led somewhere true. Fallon Lane had spent three years building a story about a woman who saved animals nobody else would. All it took to unmake that story was asking one question nobody had bothered to ask: *show me the license.*

She didn't have one.

That wasn't war. That was an audit.
