Chapter 3

Whitney called it lunch. She meant an invoice.

Her table sat by the window at a restaurant that had held it for her every Thursday for eleven years, whether or not she called ahead. I arrived at twelve fifteen exactly, because that's when she said to come, and found her already seated with a glass of Sancerre she hadn't touched. Untouched wine was a prop. Whitney liked her audience to see restraint before she asked you for something enormous.

"Valerie." She air-kissed both my cheeks without rising. "You look tired. Marriage does that to a woman, doesn't it."

"I'm well, Whitney. Thank you for asking."

She waved the waiter over, ordered for both of us without checking, and waited until he'd walked away before she got to it. She always waited until the waiter walked away. Witnesses were for accusations, not requests.

"Griffin Hotels needs fifteen million," she said. "The Boca property's refinancing fell through. It's a bridge, that's all. A short one."

"The last bridge was forty million," I said. "It's still outstanding."

"This family built the connections that built your company, Valerie. The Griffin name opened doors for Crawford Holdings before you ever sat at a boardroom table." She smiled, thin and satisfied, like she'd just handed me a gift instead of a bill. "I'd think fifteen million is a small thing to ask, given everything."

"I'll have Marcus review it," I said, which we both knew meant no.

Her smile didn't move, but her eyes did — a quick recalibration, the look of a woman switching weapons. "You're thirty-four," she said. "No children. A woman your age, married three years, and nothing to show the family. What exactly are you offering us, Valerie, besides a checkbook?"

The salad arrived. I picked up my fork.

"I keep your son breathing," I said. "That was the offer. You accepted it at the wedding."

She set her glass down harder than she meant to. Wine climbed the side and didn't spill — close, though. "Don't be crude."

"I'm being precise. There's a difference." I finished the salad in four bites, because I wasn't going to sit there longer than I had to, and stood before dessert came. "Thank you for lunch."

I left cash on the table. She hadn't intended to pay, and I wasn't going to make her admit it.

By the following Wednesday, a columnist had Whitney's line about connections and doors in print, unattributed but unmistakable. I read it once, on my phone, in the back of the car. I didn't call to ask who leaked it. I already knew. Whitney doesn't leak by accident. She leaks the way other people breathe.

---

Marcus put Griffin Hotels on the board agenda for the third time that quarter. He'd stopped bringing charts. He just talked now, flat and even, the way you talk when you've said something twice already and you're tired of being right in private.

"Forty million in bridge exposure, zero repayment activity, and a subsidiary bleeding at a rate that's now visible on our consolidated statements," he said. "Two years ago I called this a risk. Today I'm calling it a line item."

I didn't defend it. That was new, and I watched him notice.

"Prepare a recall framework for the forty million," I said. "Full documentation, full timeline, ready to execute."

"Ready to execute," he repeated, "or executing?"

"Ready." I closed the folder in front of me. "The file isn't complete yet."

He didn't ask what file. Marcus has learned not to ask me things twice, either.

---

Hudson missed his evening dose three nights running, and I stopped saying anything about it, which was its own kind of statement, one he apparently couldn't hear.

The first call came at 1 a.m. on a Tuesday — Dr. Okafor's night nurse, clipped and calm, telling me his oxygen saturation had dropped to eighty-eight in the middle of an attack he'd waited too long to treat. I was dressed and downstairs before she finished the sentence. I've done this before. My hands don't shake anymore. I gave the team his weight-adjusted dosing without checking a chart, because I know it the way I know my own name, and I stood in the doorway of his room while they worked, arms crossed, watching the numbers climb back where they belonged.

He looked at me over the nebulizer mask when it was over. His eyes were wet — not from fear, I don't think. From something closer to disappointment.

The second call came four days later. Same pattern. Same efficiency. Same me, standing at the foot of his bed with my phone already in my hand, texting Priya an update before the mask came off his face.

"You didn't even sit down," he said, voice raw and thin from the treatment. "You just stood there. Like you were watching a presentation."

"I was watching your oxygen levels," I said. "They're back to ninety-six. You'll live."

"That's it? That's all you have?"

"What did you want me to say, Hudson?"

He turned his face toward the window instead of answering, and I understood, watching the muscle work in his jaw, exactly what he'd wanted. He wanted me on my knees by the bed. He wanted my voice breaking. He wanted proof that losing him would cost me something visible.

I turned off the lamp on my way out and let the door click shut behind me, soft, controlled, the way I do everything.

He could have his crisis. I wasn't going to give him my fear to go with it.
