Chapter 3

Gavin called Alicia at 11:47 PM.

I listened to the recording later. His voice was steady. Calm. Like he was asking her to pick up dry cleaning.

"I need your help with something," he said.

Alicia's voice was tight. "It's almost midnight."

"I know. This can't wait."

"Gavin—"

"Please. I'll explain when I get there."

She didn't say yes. She didn't say no. She just breathed into the phone for three seconds.

"Fine," she said.

He arrived at her apartment in Ballard at 12:20 AM. I watched through the dashboard camera Petra had installed in his car two weeks earlier. He parked under a streetlight. Killed the engine. Sat there for a moment with his hands on the wheel.

Then he reached into the back seat and pulled out a black duffel bag.

He walked to her building. Third floor. Unit 304. She opened the door before he knocked.

"What's in the bag?" she said.

He stepped inside. Closed the door behind him. Set the bag on her kitchen table and unzipped it.

A dark wig. Shoulder-length. Brown. Close to my color.

A gray hoodie.

A burner phone.

A newspaper. Today's Seattle Times.

Alicia stared at the contents. Then at him.

"What is this?"

"I need you to do something for me."

"Gavin—"

"Just listen." He pulled out his phone. Opened the notes app. Turned the screen toward her. "I need you to read this. On camera. Wearing the wig. Holding the newspaper."

She read the first line. Her face went pale.

"No."

"Alicia—"

"No. Absolutely not. This is insane."

"It's not insane. It's necessary."

She backed away from the table. "You want me to pretend to be Quinn. You want me to fake a kidnapping video."

"I want you to help me solve a problem."

"This is criminal."

"This is survival."

Her hands were shaking. "You're out of your mind."

Gavin's face didn't change. His voice didn't rise. He just looked at her the way you look at a spreadsheet that isn't balancing.

"You're already in this," he said.

"I'm not—"

"You are. Those photos? They're of both of us. Your face. Your name. If I go down, you go down. So you can help me fix this, or we both lose everything."

Silence.

Alicia's breathing was shallow. Fast. She looked at the wig. At the newspaper. At him.

"Where's Quinn?" she whispered.

"I don't know."

"You don't know."

"She left. Tuesday morning. I haven't heard from her since."

"And you think she's—"

"I think someone took her. Or she's hiding. Either way, her parents will pay to get her back."

Alicia's eyes widened. "You're going to extort her parents."

"I'm going to give them proof their daughter is alive. And they're going to pay for that peace of mind. Everyone wins."

"Except Quinn."

Gavin picked up the wig. Held it out to her. "Put it on."

"No."

"Alicia."

"I said no."

He stepped closer. His voice dropped. Not louder. Quieter. Flatter. The warmth was gone. The charm was gone. What was left was something cold and mechanical.

"You owe me," he said.

"I don't owe you anything."

"I've spent eighteen months protecting you. Keeping you off the radar. Making sure no one at Hartley & Cole connected the dots. You think that was free?"

Her voice cracked. "You said you loved me."

"I said what you needed to hear."

She flinched like he'd slapped her.

Gavin held out the wig again. "Put it on. Read the script. Five minutes. Then you never have to see me again."

Alicia stared at him. Her face was white. Her hands were fists.

Then she took the wig.

She walked to the bathroom. Came back two minutes later. The wig was crooked. Her eyes were red.

"Where?" she said.

"Basement. Storage unit. Low light."

They went downstairs. The basement was concrete and fluorescent buzz and the smell of mildew. Gavin unlocked her storage unit. Pulled the chain on the overhead bulb. The light was dim. Yellow. It made shadows.

He handed her the newspaper. Opened the burner phone. Set it to record.

"Hold the paper so the date shows. Look at the camera. Read the script. Sound scared."

Alicia's voice was barely a whisper. "I hate you."

"I know. Now read."

She held up the newspaper. Her hands were shaking so hard the paper rattled.

Gavin hit record.

Alicia looked into the camera. Her voice trembled.

"Mom. Dad. It's me. I'm okay. I'm scared but I'm okay. Please do what they say. Please. I just want to come home."

Her voice broke on the last word.

Gavin stopped recording.

"Again," he said. "Less crying. More fear."

She did it again.

And again.

On the fourth take, he smiled. "Perfect."

Alicia ripped off the wig. Threw it at him. Walked out of the storage unit without a word.

Gavin packed the wig back into the duffel bag. Picked up the burner phone. Watched the video one more time.

Then he drove home.

---

He edited the video at 2:30 AM.

I watched through the cloned laptop feed. He sat at the kitchen table with his scotch and his MacBook. Opened iMovie. Imported the footage.

He degraded the resolution. Added a slight flicker. Made it look like it had been shot on an old phone in bad conditions. Authentic.

He cropped the frame so the storage unit walls weren't visible. Just Quinn's face. Just the newspaper. Just the fear.

He exported the file. Uploaded it to a burner email account. Typed a message.

*$800,000. Wire instructions to follow. You have 48 hours. Do not contact police.*

He attached the video.

He hovered the cursor over the send button.

Then he clicked.

The confirmation appeared. Message sent.

Gavin leaned back in his chair. Took a long drink. Stared at the ceiling.

He was already redecorating his life.

New condo. New car. New everything.

He didn't think about Quinn.

He didn't think about Alicia.

He thought about the $800,000.

And he smiled.
