Chapter 5

I found him in the study on a Tuesday, the door open just enough to look like an accident.

He was signing something, pen moving fast, the desk lamp throwing gold across his hands. I stood in the doorway and let my breath shake. Not much. Just enough.

"Ethan."

He looked up. Whatever he saw in my face made him set the pen down.

"Bella? What's wrong?"

I stepped into the room slow, like walking hurt. I wrapped my arms around myself and let my hands tremble against my sleeves. "I keep seeing her," I whispered. "On the road. The headlights. I don't — I don't know why it keeps coming back."

His chair scraped back. He was up fast, hands out, hovering like he didn't know where he was allowed to touch me anymore. "Hey. Hey, look at me. That's not real. That's the medication playing tricks."

"Is it?" I let my eyes go glassy, wet at the rims. "Sometimes I think I remember things that didn't happen. And sometimes I think I remember things that did."

His jaw worked. I watched him decide something.

"Listen to me." His voice dropped into that low, private register, the one he used when he thought no one but the person in front of him existed. "Whatever you think you remember — I handled it. I handled the situation the only way I could. Do you understand? The report, the way it was written — that wasn't a lie, Bella, that was a correction. A necessary correction. People make mistakes. You bury the mistake so it doesn't bury everyone around it."

I nodded, slow, like the words were medicine going down hard.

"I need you to stop torturing yourself over this," he said, and for one strange second his eyes were wet too. "I did what I had to do. For all of us."

"Okay," I whispered.

He pulled me against his chest. I let my body go soft there, let him feel like he'd fixed something. Under the collar of my robe, tucked against my collarbone, the little recorder Riley had given me kept running, patient and silent, swallowing every word whole.

*Two pillars,* I thought, my cheek against his shirt. *Almost a house.*

---

He told me about the award over breakfast three days later, buttering toast like it was nothing, like the words weren't a gift he was watching me unwrap.

"The Bar Association called yesterday," he said. "Attorney of the Year. The gala's in two weeks." He glanced up, cautious. "I want you there. With me."

I looked at him over my coffee cup. I let my mouth curve, small, uncertain, the exact shape of a smile that's forgotten how to be one. "I'm proud of you," I said softly.

Something moved behind his eyes — relief, maybe, or the closest thing he had left to it. He reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

"You'll need a new dress," he said. "Something nice. I'll have my assistant set up appointments."

"Okay," I said.

He didn't know the dress was already hanging in a storage unit off Tenth Avenue, wrapped in plastic, red as a fresh wound.

---

That afternoon, while Cadence was at the salon and Ethan was at the firm, I sat on the edge of my bed with the prepaid phone cupped in both hands like something alive.

*Wreath needs to arrive the night of Cadence's party,* I typed. *White lilies, black ribbon. You know the wording.*

Riley's reply came fast. *Already drafted it with the florist. In Loving Memory of Teresa Ray — May the guilty never know peace. You sure about the timing? That's before the gala. It'll tip them off.*

*Good,* I wrote. *Let it rattle him. He performs worse when he's scared. The gala's still the detonation. Two weeks. Nothing changes that.*

*Copy that. NYPD contact confirmed — thirty minutes before showtime, media release goes out simultaneous. It's happening, Bella.*

I stared at the screen until the words blurred, then sharpened again. *It's happening.* I turned the phone off and pressed it flat to my sternum, the way I always did, like I could keep it from vibrating loose the truth before I was ready.

---

The night before Cadence's party, I lay in the dark and let myself go still.

I thought of the gallery on Greene Street, the wine-dark walls, my mother in her cream suit with the brooch catching the track lighting just right. I could see her exactly — one eyebrow lifted, glass of white wine tilted at that angle only she could make look like a challenge.

*You were always too smart for him, sweetheart,* she said. *Prove it.*

"I'm proving it," I whispered to the ceiling. "I'm almost done."

My thumbnail found my palm, out of habit, pressing down the way it had for a year — the anchor, the small pain that kept me from screaming, from breaking, from becoming the woman Ethan believed he'd built out of ash.

I held the pressure a moment. Then, deliberately, I let it go.

My palm throbbed once, softly, and settled.

I wouldn't need it much longer. Two weeks. Maybe less, now, with the wreath coming, with the cracks already spreading under Ethan's calm.

I closed my eyes and let the dark hold me instead, and for the first time in a year, it didn't feel like a cell. It felt like a countdown.
