Chapter 1

I found it on a Tuesday morning while doing laundry.

The washing machine was halfway through its cycle when I checked Callan's jacket pockets. I always checked. He left things — receipts, loose change, the occasional business card. I pulled out a crumpled piece of paper and almost tossed it aside. Then I saw the letterhead.

Second mortgage.

I read it once. Then again. My hands didn't shake. They just held the paper very still while the washing machine churned behind me.

Our apartment. The Brooklyn one-bedroom we'd scraped together every cent to buy. Seven years of saving. Seven years of passing up vacations and wearing thrift-store coats and splitting dollar pizza slices because we were building something. That apartment was supposed to be proof that we'd made it. That all those years of ramen dinners and hand-me-down furniture had been worth it.

Callan had mortgaged it. Without telling me.

The borrower's name was right there in black ink: Callan Stevens. The amount made my stomach drop. The purpose line said "Personal loan repayment."

I knew exactly whose loan he'd repaid.

I folded the paper and put it in my pocket. I finished the laundry. I made the bed. I chopped vegetables for dinner with the same knife I'd used a thousand times, and my hands were perfectly steady.

That evening, I set the document on the kitchen table.

Callan came home at six-thirty. He kissed the top of my head the way he always did, dropped his keys in the bowl by the door, and headed for the fridge. He was reaching for a beer when he saw the paper.

He went very still.

"Jules—"

"When were you going to tell me?" My voice came out calm. I'd practiced it all afternoon.

He closed the fridge. Didn't open the beer. "I was going to. I just... I needed to handle it first."

"Handle it."

"Brinley was in real trouble. The loan sharks were threatening her. She didn't have anyone else."

I looked at him. Really looked. He was using his reasonable voice. The one he used in meetings when he needed to convince someone of something. "So you mortgaged our home."

"It's not like that."

"Then what is it like?"

He ran his hand through his hair. There it was. The tell I'd learned to read back in college. "She was desperate, Jules. What was I supposed to do? Let them hurt her?"

"You were supposed to talk to your wife before putting our home at risk."

"I knew you'd react like this."

The words landed between us like something dropped from a height.

"React like what?" I kept my voice level. "Like someone who just found out her husband took out a second mortgage without her knowledge?"

"You've never liked her. You've been jealous since the day she started working for me."

There it was. The deflection I'd been expecting. I'd watched him do this before — turn my legitimate concerns into my personal failings. Make it about my jealousy, my insecurity, my inability to trust.

"This isn't about jealousy," I said quietly. "This is about you making a major financial decision that affects both of us without even mentioning it."

"I'm her boss. I have a responsibility—"

"You have a wife."

The words came out sharper than I'd intended. Callan's jaw tightened.

"I was being a decent person. That's what you do when someone needs help. You help them. I thought you of all people would understand that."

The irony of it hit me like a slap. Me of all people. I almost laughed.

"Any decent person would have discussed it with their spouse first."

"You're overreacting."

"I'm really not."

"You never trusted me. That's the real problem here. You've been looking for reasons to—"

"I found a mortgage document, Callan. I didn't go looking for anything."

He grabbed his keys. "I can't do this right now."

"Where are you going?"

"Out."

The door slammed. I heard his footsteps in the hallway. The elevator dinged. Then silence.

I sat at the kitchen table for a long time. The document was still there, creased where I'd unfolded it. Our address printed in neat block letters. The amount that would take years to pay off.

I thought about twenty-eight years. Twenty-eight years of shared history, from scraped knees on the same Brooklyn block to this kitchen table, this crumpled paper, this particular silence.

I thought about the inheritance I'd liquidated to save his family. The money my mother left me. The only piece of her I had left, converted into an anonymous bailout so the Stevens family wouldn't lose everything.

He'd never known. I'd never told him.

I picked up the document and looked at it one more time.

Then I admitted something I'd been avoiding for months: the marriage was already over. I'd just found the paperwork.
