Chapter 1

Ethan Hunter had a crush on a woman when he was younger.

When she returned to the country, Ethan brought her back to my house.

That day, I packed my bags and left the Hunter household.

Later that evening, I scrolled through Sophie's Instagram and saw a post, "After all this time, it's still you and me."

I liked her post and commented, "Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness together."

The next day, Ethan received my divorce papers, but he refused to go through with it.

——

After paying my respects to my grandmother, I returned home.

As I walked in, I saw Sophie sitting on the couch.

She was Ethan's first love.

Just an hour earlier, Ethan had told me he had something important to do and couldn't pick me up from the cemetery, leaving me to find my own way home.

Now, it was clear what his "important" task was—picking up Sophie, who had just returned to the country.

Sophie was wearing my loungewear and slippers, lazily leaning against the sofa cushions, calmly directing Ethan to get her a glass of water.

He cheerfully obliged, putting down the half-peeled orange he had been working on.

Seeing me, Ethan quickly explained, "Sophie just got back and has nowhere to stay for now, so she'll be living with us for a while." I nodded in response.

Suddenly, I recalled Ethan's unusual behavior over the past few days.

He had never been one to concern himself with household matters, yet he had stocked our fridge with an abundance of fruits and snacks.

The guest room was filled with new items as well.

For several days, Ethan had seemed excited and happy.

Looking back now, it all made sense—it was all for Sophie.

Sophie and Ethan were chatting intimately about their high school memories.

Feeling like a complete outsider in my own home for the first time, I got up and retreated to the bedroom.

The room felt cold and empty; the window was open, letting in a chill.

As I wrapped my coat tighter around myself, I silently packed my belongings.

Sophie's tinkling laughter floated in from the living room.

I couldn't help but hasten my movements.

Just as I was about done packing, Sophie suggested that Ethan take her back to their high school for a visit and to grab a bite at their favorite restaurant near the school gate.

As the door closed behind them, tears suddenly streamed down my face.

After three years of marriage, I had believed that Ethan and I shared a strong and stable bond.

But Sophie's return shattered all my illusions.

I didn't want to deceive myself any longer.

As I left the house, my phone buzzed unexpectedly.

It was a message from Ethan, "Passing by the bakery; I'll grab your favorite cake on my way home. Is there anything else you want?"

I didn't reply.

After a moment's thought, I blocked him on Messenger.

I slept soundly that night and didn't wake until 2 PM the next day.

My phone was filled with missed calls from Ethan.

Just as I hesitated about what to do next, his call came through again.

"Emma, what's going on? Why did you block me on Messenger?" His voice was laced with anger.

After a pause, he asked softly, "Where are you? Don't you remember today is our family dinner at the old Hunter house?"

For three years of marriage, we had gone back to the Hunter family home for dinner every Saturday.

They cherished family gatherings.

In the past, I had happily played along with Ethan in front of his family as a loving couple.

But this time, I refused.

"Ethan, I'm not going back to Hunter house with you."

"I want a divorce."
