Chapter 1

I woke to Dr. Patel standing at the foot of my bed with his hands in his coat pockets. That was the first wrong thing. He always held my chart. Always flipped through pages while he talked, like the numbers could soften whatever he had to say.

Today his hands stayed buried.

"Ms. Wagner." He cleared his throat. "We've located a matching donor."

The words hit me like a fist to the sternum. Three years. Three years of dialysis ports and bruised veins and waking up tasting metal. Three years of watching my body eat itself while my name sat on a list that never moved.

I gripped the bed rail. My knuckles went white. "When?"

Dr. Patel's jaw tightened. He looked at the window. At the monitor. Anywhere but me.

"When is the surgery?" My voice cracked.

He opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

That was when I knew.

The door swung open before he could answer. Finn walked in wearing the charcoal Tom Ford suit I'd picked out for his investor meeting last month. No flowers. No coffee. His cufflinks caught the fluorescent light as he straightened them—once, twice—and stopped at the foot of my bed exactly where Dr. Patel had been standing.

Dr. Patel left without a word.

Finn didn't sit. Didn't come closer. He stood there like he was chairing a board meeting, hands loose at his sides, expression carefully neutral.

"Elyse." My name sounded like an agenda item. "There's been a development with the donor match."

I stared at him. At the man I'd worked myself into kidney failure for. The man whose company I'd built from nothing while he smiled for photographers and shook hands and took credit.

"The kidney has been redirected," he said. Redirected. Like a package. Like a fucking FedEx shipment. "To someone with a more critical timeline."

The room tilted. I dug my nails into the bed rail.

"Kali Roberts," he continued. His voice softened on her name. It always did. "She's been diagnosed with acute renal failure. Stage five. She needs this, Elyse. She's genuinely dying."

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't speak. My lips moved but nothing came out.

Finn reached into his jacket and pulled out a check. He set it on the bedside table, careful not to disturb the water pitcher. The amount had a lot of zeros.

"This should help you get settled," he said. "Find a new place. Start fresh. It's time for you to step aside gracefully."

Gracefully.

I looked at the check. At my husband. At the monitor beeping beside me, tracking a body that was shutting down.

"You can go now," I whispered.

He hesitated. For a second I thought I saw something flicker across his face—doubt, maybe, or the ghost of guilt. Then he straightened his cufflinks again and walked out.

I sat there staring at the check until the numbers blurred.

Ten minutes later, she appeared.

Kali Roberts stood in my doorway wearing a cream cashmere sweater and holding white lilies. The flowers people bring to funerals. Her eyes were red-rimmed. Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Elyse." She stepped inside, moving like she might shatter. "I had to come. I had to thank you."

I said nothing.

"Your generosity—" Her voice broke. She pressed a hand to her chest. "I know what you're giving up. What you're sacrificing. I just… I hope we can move forward without bitterness. I hope you can understand."

She set the lilies on the windowsill. The scent hit me—heavy, cloying, sweet. Underneath it, her perfume. I knew that perfume. I'd worn it for two years before switching brands.

She was wearing my perfume.

Kali lingered in the doorway, waiting. For what? Absolution? Permission to take my life and wear it better than I had?

I looked at her. Really looked. At the perfect tears. The trembling hands. The performance so flawless it could've won awards.

"You should go," I said.

She left.

I stared at the lilies until something inside me went cold and still and absolutely clear.

I pressed the call button. When the nurse came, I asked for my discharge paperwork and my clothes.

"Ms. Wagner, you're not stable enough—"

"Now," I said. "Please."

Finn returned that evening. I heard his shoes in the hallway—Italian leather, confident strides. He opened the door expecting tears. Expecting me to beg.

I was sitting upright, fully dressed. The divorce papers he'd had drawn up three months ago—I'd found them in his desk drawer, already signed on his end, just waiting for my surrender—were stacked neatly on the tray table.

I'd signed every page.

He stared. "Elyse—"

"I'm keeping nothing," I said. "No assets. No alimony. No property. You can have it all."

"You don't have to—"

"I'd like to leave now."

He stood there, mouth open, words dying on his tongue.

I picked up my purse. Walked past him. Didn't look back.

The cab dropped me at the Brooklyn sublet I'd rented three months ago under my maiden name. A studio with peeling paint and a mattress on the floor. I'd told myself it was just a precaution. A safety net I'd never need.

I set my suitcase down. Sat on the edge of the bare mattress. The room was silent except for the radiator's hiss.

I didn't cry.

I opened my sketchbook and began to draw.
