Chapter 3

Logan called me at six in the morning. One word: 'Done.'

I sat up in the hospital cot. My body still ached. Everything still ached. But my head was clear.

'Where is she?' I asked.

'Connecticut. Safe house in Fairfield. Nanny's name is Rosa. Former pediatric nurse. She'll keep the baby comfortable until we move.'

I closed my eyes. Exhaled.

'Marguerite?'

'Cooperative,' Logan said. 'I told her you were fleeing domestic violence. Showed her financials proving the Montgomery family could bury any custody case. She didn't ask questions after that. Just said she'd been waiting twenty years for someone to give her a reason to bend the rules.'

'The donation?'

Logan's voice flattened. 'Fifty thousand. Wired to the facility's operating fund this morning. Anonymous donor. She cried when she saw the transfer.'

I opened my eyes. Looked at Lily through the isolette glass. She was awake. Staring at nothing with that unfocused newborn gaze.

'When?' I asked.

'This afternoon. Adonis has a board meeting at two. Three-hour minimum. I checked his calendar.'

'You're sure.'

'I'm sure.'

I hung up. Sat there with my hands folded in my lap. Machines beeped. Down the hall, a baby screamed.

I didn't feel anything. Just cold. Just clear.

---

Logan arrived at one-thirty with a car seat and a canvas bag. He didn't look at me. Just walked to the isolette and started disconnecting monitors.

A nurse appeared in the doorway. Young. Nervous.

'Sir, you can't—'

Logan turned. Showed her a hospital badge he'd printed that morning. Fake, but clean. 'Transport to radiology. Dr. Mehta's orders.'

She hesitated. Looked at me.

I smiled. Tired. Grateful. 'They're just running tests. She'll be back in an hour.'

The nurse nodded. Left.

Logan lifted Lily out. She was so small in his hands. He bundled her into the car seat. Checked the straps twice. Then he looked at me.

'You're sure,' he said.

I stood. Walked to him. Put my hand on Lily's cheek. She turned toward my palm. Rooting reflex. Looking for milk.

'I'm sure,' I said.

Logan nodded. Picked up the car seat. Walked out.

I watched him disappear down the hall. Watched the elevator doors close.

Then I sat back down and waited.

---

Logan came back forty minutes later with a different car seat. Same canvas bag. He moved fast. Efficient. Didn't speak.

He placed the new baby in isolette number seven. Reconnected the monitors. Adjusted the IV line. She looked exactly like Lily. Same weight. Same coloring. Darker hair, maybe. But newborns all looked the same in the first week. Adonis wouldn't notice.

Logan stepped back. Looked at me.

'Rosa has her,' he said quietly. 'She's safe.'

I nodded. Stared at the baby in the isolette. Richard Montgomery's abandoned daughter. The one he'd paid twenty thousand dollars to forget.

She yawned. Tiny fist curling against her cheek.

'What's her name?' I asked.

'Doesn't have one. Marguerite's paperwork just says Baby Doe.'

I tilted my head. 'Not anymore. Now she's Lily Montgomery.'

Logan's jaw tightened. He didn't say anything. Just picked up the empty car seat and left.

I sat down in the plastic chair. Put my hand against the glass. The baby—Richard's baby—shifted. Settled.

She'd grow up in penthouses. Wear designer clothes. Have everything Adonis's money could buy.

And she'd never know she wasn't his.

---

Adonis arrived at six. I heard his voice in the hallway before I saw him. Loud. Urgent. He burst through the door with flowers. Lilies. White ones.

He stopped when he saw me. His face crumpled.

'Emmeline. God. I'm so sorry. I came as fast as I could.'

I didn't stand. Just looked at him.

He crossed the room. Knelt beside my chair. Took my hands.

'Is she okay? The baby—is she—'

'She's fine,' I said. 'Three pounds, two ounces. Breathing on her own now.'

His eyes filled. He looked at the isolette. At the baby inside.

'She's so small,' he whispered.

I watched him stand. Watched him press his hand against the glass. The baby stirred. Opened her eyes.

Adonis made a sound. Something broken.

'She has your eyes,' he said.

She didn't. She had Richard's eyes. But he didn't know that. He'd never know that.

'Can I hold her?' he asked.

I nodded.

A nurse came in. Lifted the baby out. Placed her in Adonis's arms.

He cradled her like she was made of glass. Tears running down his face. 'Hey, sweetheart. Hey. I'm your dad. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere.'

The baby yawned. Settled against his chest.

Adonis looked at me. 'I'm going to be better. I swear. I'm going to be the father she deserves. The husband you deserve. Emmeline, I—'

'I know,' I said.

He smiled. Relieved. Hopeful.

I looked at the baby in his arms. At his face. At the trap closing around him.

And I felt nothing.

Just cold. Just clear.

Just done.
