Chapter 2

“Good that you’ve finally come to this realization,” my mentor said gently over the phone. “Remember, your happiness is your own to protect. Don’t let yourself get tangled in others’ expectations.”

Her words were like a balm for my wounds and I let myself lean into her kindness. I had once been so sure that my marriage to Duke would be my happy ending. Yet, slowly, it dawned on me that I had been clinging to an illusion.

My mind drifted back to the very first time we met. I was a new actress then, exhausted after a long day of filming. I’d taken a break in a quiet corner on set, only to accidentally fall asleep. By the time I woke up, the entire crew had packed up and gone. Alone, I tried to use my phone, but the poor signal in that remote area forced me to walk toward the main road, hoping to catch a bus.

I was nearly there when a drunken man lurched out of nowhere, his grip cold and unrelenting as he tried to pull me into the nearby woods. My heart pounded, fear tightening in my throat, when suddenly a voice rang out—a blur of fists and fury followed as Duke threw himself at the man.

The struggle left Duke bruised, his face swollen and bleeding, but he smiled through it, brushing it off. “No one’s going to mess with you now. I look so terrifying, even a ghost would run from me!” He raised his arms, waving them playfully as he jumped up and down to make me laugh. And just like that, with his kindness and his courage, Duke had leapt into my heart.

For a time, Duke even went against his controlling mother, Marion, who had scorned our relationship. He’d stood by me despite her opposition and I had believed this was proof of his love. It was why, in the years that followed—through Marion’s taunts, Duke’s growing indifference and every struggle I faced to maintain our home—I stayed. I thought that if I held on, our marriage would one day feel like a fairytale ending. But that hope began to dim the moment Jessie returned from abroad. Marion wasted no time cozying up to her, orchestrating opportunities for Duke and her to “reconnect,” even taking hundreds of pictures with Jessie, who Marion now called “her future daughter-in-law.”

While I saved money for Duke’s business and skimped on every luxury, Marion’s social media posts were full of their trips together—Duke and Jessie laughing together on a snowy mountaintop in Hokkaido, kissing under the Northern Lights in Iceland. My heart clenched as I realized Duke was making memories with Jessie that I had dreamed of sharing with him.

Eventually, I accepted the truth: my love for him was as fragile as glass and his love for me was nothing more than a passing illusion. If he wanted to be with Jessie so much, I would let him go. I would no longer sacrifice myself for their comfort.

The days passed and I threw myself into the new role I had accepted. I passed the makeup test and rehearsed tirelessly, awaiting the start of filming. Then, out of the blue, my lawyer’s office called, asking if I could meet them at a new address. Curiosity prickled my thoughts as I jotted down the address they provided.

When I arrived, I rang the doorbell. After a few moments, Duke’s familiar face appeared, but his expression was anything but welcoming. He looked pale and unsettled, eyes wide as though I’d caught him in a lie.

“Camila… what are you doing here?” he stammered, blocking the doorway.

I pushed past him without answering, my heart heavy with dread as I took in the home—a lavish new villa, decorated with the kind of opulence I had never known. Imported leather furniture, high-end light fixtures and designer décor. My eyes drifted over the polished marble floors and I felt my heart crack as I remembered the years I’d pinched pennies, avoiding any luxuries for Duke’s sake.

My gaze landed on a sleek leather sofa, one I’d admired for ages but never bought, dismissed by Duke as “a wasteful expense.” Yet here it was, gleaming under the chandelier’s light in their new home.

“Expecting someone, Duke?” A voice purred from behind him. Jessie stood at the top of the staircase, her hair tousled, wearing matching cartoon pajamas with Duke. I felt a laugh rise in my throat, cold and bitter. Duke had always scoffed at these “childish” couple’s items. In fact, when I’d bought us matching pajamas years ago, he’d tossed them out, calling me “too old to be so silly.” Yet here he was, with Jessie, embracing everything he’d once mocked.

“Camila, please… it’s not what you think,” Duke stammered, reaching for me, but Jessie intervened with a wicked smile.

“Why hide it from her, Duke?” She sauntered over, removing the white sheet that had been draped over a massive sculpture in the living room. I gasped as the sheet fell away, revealing a statue of Duke and Jessie in a loving embrace, modeled after their photo under the aurora borealis in Iceland. A photo of them fulfilling my long-held dream.

I had once begged Duke to take me to see the Northern Lights in Iceland. But he’d refused every time, calling it a pointless expense. Instead, one night, he’d spent $9.90 on a star projector and shone it on our ceiling, saying, “There you go. That’s enough of the aurora for us.” I had convinced myself that it was the thought that mattered, that his love was in every gesture.

Now, seeing him fulfill that same dream for Jessie, I finally saw the truth. He had never been willing to spend on me, only to make me settle for less. But for Jessie, he was willing to buy the stars.

Tears pooled in my eyes and I couldn’t hold them back anymore. Without thinking, I picked up a golf club lying in the corner of the room, gripping it tightly as my mind flooded with every betrayal, every hurt.

“Camila!” Duke exclaimed, his voice a desperate plea. But I barely heard him over the rush of my own anger. For years, I’d swallowed every insult, every disregard and here he was, showing me just how little I had meant to him.

Jessie stepped closer, her smug smile daring me to lash out. “Poor thing,” she taunted softly. “Did you really think he’d ever be happy with someone like you?”

I swung the club once, hard, shattering a nearby glass coffee table. The sound reverberated through the room, echoing my broken heart. Duke lunged forward, grabbing my arm, but I shook him off, my voice a raw whisper. “You can keep everything—this house, this life. I’m done.”

With a final look at the two of them, I turned and walked out of that villa, feeling the weight of every lost dream fall away. I had no need for Duke, no need for anyone who would so callously discard me. I had my talent, my strength and a future that was mine to create. Let him live with the emptiness he chose. I would find my own light.
