Chapter 3

Remington appeared on a Thursday with a canvas bag and two paper containers that smelled like garlic and rosemary. He knocked once, then waited. I could see his shadow through the frosted glass of the studio door. He didn't knock again.

I let him in.

He stepped inside and set the bag on the floor near the door. Not on my work table. Not near the canvases. On the floor, where it wouldn't be in the way.

"I made too much," he said. "Thought you might be hungry."

I looked at the containers. Steam curled from the edges. "You cooked this?"

"Yeah." He shrugged out of his jacket. "I do that sometimes."

I opened the first container. Pasta. Real pasta, with actual vegetables and chicken that had been seared properly. Not takeout pretending to be homemade. The real thing.

We ate on the floor. He didn't ask about the stitches at my hairline. He didn't ask about the brace on my wrist. He asked if I wanted more water, and when I said yes, he got up and filled my glass from the tap without being told where the cups were.

Afterward, he pulled a book from his bag and sat with his back against the wall. He didn't ask to see what I was working on. He just read.

I picked up my brush.

The silence was different with him in it. Not empty. Not waiting. Just there.

I worked for two hours. He turned pages. Once, I glanced over and caught him watching me. Not the canvas. Me. My hands. The way I tilted my head when I was deciding whether a line was right.

He looked away when I met his eyes, but he was smiling.

"What?" I asked.

"Nothing." He went back to his book. "You get this look. Like you're arguing with someone who isn't there."

"I am."

"Winning?"

"Sometimes."

He laughed. It was a low, easy sound. The kind of laugh that didn't want anything from me.

I laughed too. The sound came out before I could stop it — full and startled and mine.

Then I froze.

Remington didn't look up. He turned another page like nothing had happened. Like I hadn't just made a sound I hadn't heard myself make in three years.

I pressed my thumb and forefinger together. Held it. Let it go.

He kept reading.

I kept painting.

When he left, two hours later, he took the empty containers and left the book on the floor. "In case you get bored," he said at the door.

"I won't."

"I know." He smiled. "But it's there if you do."

He didn't say he'd come back. He didn't ask when he could see me again. He just left, and I stood in the middle of my studio with gold paint on my hands and the faint smell of rosemary still in the air.

I looked at the book. Fiction. Something I'd never heard of. I picked it up and opened the cover.

On the inside flap, in neat handwriting: *For when the silence gets too loud.*

I set it down carefully. I went back to the canvas.

I painted until my wrist ached and the light outside went blue.

Across town, Donovan Stone sat in a conference room that smelled like panic and expensive cologne.

Marcus Hale slid the report across the table. "Two hundred million. Gone."

Donovan stared at the numbers. They didn't make sense. They couldn't make sense.

"The biotech firm was a shell," Marcus continued. His voice was flat. Tired. "The financials were fabricated. The entire acquisition was a fraud."

"How—"

"Your girlfriend signed off on it." Marcus leaned back in his chair. "Sasha Reyes. Her name is on every document. She had access to the accounts. She authorized the transfers."

Donovan's hands went cold.

"There's more," Marcus said. "Wire transfers. Unauthorized purchases. She's been bleeding the company for months. The board wants answers. They want her gone. And frankly, Donovan, they want to know why you gave her access in the first place."

Donovan drove back to the penthouse with his knuckles white on the wheel. He found Sasha in the living room, scrolling through her phone, a glass of wine on the table beside her.

She looked up when he walked in. Smiled. "You're home early."

"Pack your things."

The smile faltered. "What?"

"Pack. Your. Things." He pulled out his phone and made a call. "Security? I need someone removed from my apartment. Now."

Sasha stood. Her face went pale, then red. "You can't do this."

"I already did."

"I'm pregnant with your—"

"No." His voice was ice. "You're not. The doctor called me back. You lied about the dates. You lied about the complications. You've been lying from the beginning."

She opened her mouth. Closed it. Her hands were shaking.

Security arrived six minutes later. They escorted her out with two suitcases and a Chanel bag.

Donovan stood in the center of the penthouse and looked at the bare nail on the wall.

The silence had a sound.

It sounded like everything breaking at once.
