Chapter 2

On Monday morning at nine o’clock sharp, Ignacio held his executive board meeting.

That was when the courier walked in.

I sat on the edge of my hospital bed in my gray sweatpants, watching the clock on my phone. The courier had strict instructions: hand the red folder directly to Ignacio Daniels in front of his board of directors. Inside were the divorce papers. Clean, ruthless, and demanding every single cent the law allowed.

Before he could finish flipping past the first page, I opened my laptop.

I took out Ignacio’s black Centurion card. I had the numbers memorized.

Over the weekend, I had looked up the name from the paper napkin: Finley Torres. He was a twenty-five-year-old computational engineering graduate student at the University of Washington. His grades were flawless. His tech startup was brilliant. But he was broke, drowning in tuition debt and working three campus jobs to survive.

My fingers moved swiftly over the keys.

I paid off his tuition in full. Then I transferred one hundred and fifty thousand dollars into his registered startup account under an anonymous angel fund. Two hundred thousand dollars total.

Next, I opened a luxury real estate portal. I wired eighty-five thousand dollars to lease a furnished penthouse condo on the Seattle waterfront for the next year.

Finally, I hit the downtown boutiques. Sixty thousand dollars for cashmere coats, tailored suits, silk blouses, and Italian leather boots. I replaced every single thing Ignacio had ever bought for me.

His card declined on the last pair of shoes.

My phone vibrated immediately. The Daniels corporate security team had flagged the fraud alert. Ignacio was probably staring at his phone during his presentation, turning red.

I sent him a single text:

*Consider it severance for seven years of unpaid labor.*

Then I blocked his number.

***

Ignacio didn't sign the papers.

Of course he didn’t. To a man like Ignacio, women didn't leave him. He dismissed my filing as an emotional tantrum. He told his family lawyer to stall.

On Tuesday, an enormous bouquet of pale pink peonies arrived at my hospital room.

There were at least fifty blooms. A small white card was tucked inside.

*Let’s talk like adults,* it read in his assistant's neat script.

Peonies were my favorite flower. But Ignacio had never remembered that. He clearly had to make his secretary look it up in my file.

I didn't take the plastic wrap off. I took a black marker from my bedside drawer and wrote across the card in heavy block letters:

*Adults don't kick their pregnant wives.*

I handed the bouquet right back to the delivery driver. "Take them back to Daniels Tower. Put them on Mr. Daniels's desk."

Two hours later, I checked out of the hospital and took a cab straight to my new waterfront condo.

The floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the cold, gray water of Elliott Bay. It was quiet. It smelled like fresh paint and rain.

I sat on the sofa and dialed a private investigator named Marcus.

"I need two files," I said, my voice dead calm. "First is my husband, Ignacio, and Rowan Meyer. I want hotel bookings, text messages, building security tapes, and company wire transfers to her personal accounts."

"Consider it done," Marcus said.

"Second," I took a slow breath, "I want Sophia Meyer. Twelve years ago. When my mother, Penny Fox, was sick in the hospital."

There was a pause on the line. "That’s an old trail, Mrs. Daniels."

"I don't care. Pull pharmacy logs. Hospital nurse notes. Pull Sophia's bank records right before my mother passed. Every single dollar."

"I'll find it," Marcus promised.

I hung up. I pulled my knees to my chest. A deep, yellowing bruise ringed my wrist where Ignacio had grabbed me during the fight. I traced it with my thumb.

My mother had died quietly, forgiving everyone while Sophia smiled in her kitchen.

I was not my mother.

***

Three weeks later, someone knocked on my door.

I checked the security monitor. Standing in the hallway was a young man in a worn canvas jacket. His dark hair was damp from the Seattle drizzle. He carried a leather messenger bag.

Finley Torres.

I opened the door.

He had his mouth open, ready to launch into a rehearsed speech. But the moment his eyes met mine, he stopped.

His eyes traveled to my pale face, then down to the faint yellow bruise still fading on my wrist.

"It's you," he whispered.

"Hello, Finley," I said quietly.

He swallowed hard. He reached into his coat and pulled out an official cashier's check. The paper trembled slightly between his long fingers. I noticed ink stains near his fingernails.

"I spent three weeks tracing the shell corporation that funded my school account," he said, speaking fast. "I came here to return it. Look, I don't know who you really are, Mrs. Daniels. But I don't take handouts. I earn my own way."

He held out the check.

I didn't touch it. I crossed my arms against the cool hallway draft.

"It’s not a handout," I said. "It’s an investment. I expect returns."

Finley blinked. "Returns? What kind of returns?"

"You're building an algorithm that automates financial risk modeling, right?"

He looked surprised. "Yes."

"Good. Finish it. Make it huge. Build a company that takes market share from Daniels Corporation until they choke on it." I held his gaze without blinking. "We’ll draft a formal contract tomorrow. Fifty-one percent equity stays with you. I just want a seat at the table."

Finley stood there in the silent hall. His jaw worked as he tried to process my words. He looked at the check in his hand, then looked back at me. There was no pity in his dark eyes—only a quiet, steady understanding.

"Okay," he said softly. "Tomorrow."

"Tomorrow at ten," I said, and closed the door.

I walked over to the bay window. Down below on the wet street, a beat-up silver sedan was parked under a streetlight.

The headlights clicked on, but the car didn't pull away.

Finley sat behind the steering wheel, looking up at my high-rise window through the rain. He sat there in the dark for twenty full minutes before he finally put the car in drive.
