Chapter 2

Anders sent his first update on Thursday.

I read it at my desk, door closed, coffee going cold beside my keyboard. He wrote the way he spoke — no editorializing, no softening. Just facts, sequenced and clean.

Carson had visited Marlowe's building four times in the past week. Always after nine at night. Always gone before six in the morning. The Capitol Hill address I'd pulled from the delivery confirmation wasn't a casual arrangement. It had the rhythm of a second life.

I set the report down and looked at the wall.

I have a print above my desk — a section drawing of the Pantheon, the one that shows the oculus and the way the light falls through it at noon. I've had it since grad school. I used to look at it when a project wasn't resolving, when I couldn't find the structural logic underneath the surface problem. It helped me think.

I looked at it now and thought about nine PM and six AM and a woman named Marlowe Reed.

Then I kept reading.

Anders had noted a child. A boy, approximately three years old. Marlowe brought him to the building's courtyard each afternoon around two o'clock. He had photographed them from across the street — the boy in a red jacket, crouching to look at something on the ground, Marlowe standing a few feet back with her phone in her hand.

Anders had flagged the child's physical resemblance to Carson.

He didn't say anything else about it. He didn't need to.

I closed the report and sat very still for a moment. The room was quiet. Outside, a delivery truck was backing up somewhere on the street, the beeping small and distant and completely indifferent to what I was holding in my hands.

Three years old.

Three years ago, I was in a hospital bed with a surgeon explaining to me, in careful, measured language, what the impact had done to my body. Carson had been sitting beside me, holding my hand. He'd cried. I remembered thinking, even through the medication, that I had never loved him more than I did in that moment — the way he stayed, the way he didn't look away from what was hard.

Three years old.

I got up and made fresh coffee. I stood at the kitchen window while it brewed and watched a woman walk her dog along the sidewalk below. The dog stopped at every third tree. The woman waited each time without impatience.

I thought about structure. About the way a building can look completely sound from the street while the load-bearing elements inside are quietly, systematically failing. You don't see it until you open the walls. And by then, the question isn't whether it's failing. The question is how long it's been going.

I went back to my desk and called Anders.

'The child,' I said. 'I need a DNA comparison. Whatever you need from me to make that happen.'

'I can work with a discarded sample from the boy,' he said. 'Something from the courtyard. It'll take a few days.'

'Do it.'

He paused. Not hesitation — just the brief silence of a man making a note. 'There's something else,' he said. 'I was going to include it in the next report, but you should hear it now.'

I waited.

'A man came to her building Tuesday afternoon. I have him on camera at the intercom, then in the lobby. He was agitated. Stayed eleven minutes, left without anything. I ran his plates.'

'And?'

'His name is Gunnar Perez.' Anders said it the way he said everything — level, precise, giving me the fact before the weight of it. 'I cross-referenced him against the incident report from your accident three years ago.'

The coffee mug was warm in my hand. I focused on that.

'The vehicle involved in your hit-and-run was never recovered,' Anders continued. 'But the description in the report — make, model, color — matches a vehicle registered to Perez. The registration has a three-week gap around the date of the accident. Lapsed and re-registered. It's not definitive.'

'But,' I said.

'Two weeks after the accident, a cash deposit hit his account. Eleven thousand dollars. No documented source. No employer match. No loan record.'

I set the mug down.

The room felt very quiet. Not peaceful — the kind of quiet that comes after something breaks and the sound hasn't caught up yet.

'I'm not drawing conclusions,' Anders said. 'I'm giving you what I have.'

'I know.' My voice came out steady. I was almost surprised by it. 'Send me everything. The photographs from Tuesday. The financial records. All of it.'

'It'll be in your inbox within the hour.'

I thanked him and ended the call.

Then I sat at my desk and I let myself look at the full shape of it.

Not the affair. Not even the child. Those were devastating, but they were the kind of devastation that had a name, a category, a legal remedy. People survived those. People rebuilt.

This was something else.

If Gunnar Perez had been in that car — if Carson had put him there — then the accident wasn't an accident. The surgery wasn't a tragedy. The grief I had carried for three years, the quiet grief of a woman who had accepted that some things were simply lost, that life sometimes took things and you learned to live around the absence —

That grief had been manufactured.

Carson had sat beside my hospital bed and held my hand and cried, and he had known. He had known what was done to me and who had done it and why, and he had held my hand and cried.

I looked at the Pantheon print on my wall.

The oculus. The way the light comes through it — not scattered, not diffuse, but precise. A column of light that moves across the floor as the earth turns, tracing the same path every day, predictable to the minute if you know the geometry.

I picked up my pen and opened my notebook to a clean page.

I had the structure now. I had the load-bearing logic of what I was actually looking at.

All I needed was the blueprint.
