Chapter 2

Dinner started the way it always did. Eleanor at the head of the table, counting compliments like currency. The turkey carved just so. Cousins arguing about ski trips. I sat next to Dominick and cut my food into small pieces I didn't eat, because the smell of red wine sauce made my stomach turn these days, and I didn't want anyone asking why.

Someone dimmed the lights for dessert. That was normal too — Eleanor liked the flambé to look dramatic against a dark room. The big screen on the living room wall flickered on, the one they used for slideshows of past holidays, old photos of Dominick in a Christmas sweater, baby pictures of cousins nobody remembered the names of.

Except this time it wasn't baby pictures.

It was me.

My own face, my own voice, filled the wall eight feet high. A bedroom. Low lamp light. Words I'd only ever said to Dominick, in the dark, believing no one else would ever hear them.

The room went quiet the way a room goes quiet right before a car crash. Forks stopped. Glasses stopped. Every face at that table turned toward the screen, and then toward me.

I didn't move. I couldn't. My wineglass was still in my hand, and I watched my own fingers start to shake around the stem, watched the wine tremble like it was trying to climb out.

I looked at Dominick.

He wasn't looking at the screen. He wasn't looking at me. He was looking down at his phone, thumbs moving, calm as a man answering a work email. I caught two words on his screen before he tilted it away.

*It's done.*

I understood then. This wasn't an accident. Someone had to plug in a phone, had to choose a file, had to press play. He'd done this. For her. Because she cried at a luncheon and told him I'd humiliated her, and this was how he settled the account — with my body on a wall in front of his mother, his cousins, three members of the Hunt Industries board and their wives.

Somebody laughed. Not cruelly, just nervously, the kind of laugh people make when they don't know where else to put their face. That was what finally moved me. I set the glass down so hard it cracked at the base, and I walked out of that dining room past all of them, past Eleanor's frozen mouth, past the tree with its flown-in orchids, and I didn't stop until I was in the elevator with my back against the mirrored wall, shaking so hard my teeth clicked.

I made it three blocks on foot before his car pulled up beside me, tires hissing on wet asphalt.

"Get in," Dominick said through the cracked window. Not sorry. Not even close to sorry.

I got in because it was nineteen degrees and I was twenty weeks pregnant and some old instinct still told me to do what he said.

"You humiliated me tonight," he said, pulling out into traffic, jaw tight, both hands choking the wheel. "In front of the board. Do you understand what you did?"

"What *I* did?" My voice came out high, disbelieving. "You played a private video of me for your whole family, and I humiliated *you*?"

"You made a scene walking out like that." He said it flat, like a fact, like weather. "Kylee never would have —"

"Don't." My hand went to my stomach without my permission. "Don't say her name to me right now."

He didn't answer. He drove faster instead, up onto the FDR, snow coming sideways now against the windshield, wipers slapping it away in useless little arcs. Somewhere around the overpass he slowed, jerked the car onto the shoulder, put it in park.

"Get out."

I stared at him. "What?"

"You want to make scenes, make one out here where nobody's watching." His phone buzzed in the cupholder. Kylee's name lit the screen again. He glanced at it, and something in his face softened in a way it hadn't softened for me in months. "I have somewhere to be."

"Dominick, it's freezing —"

"Walk home or freeze," he said. "Your choice."

He reached across me and opened my door himself. The wind came in like a hand shoving me. I don't remember deciding to get out. I remember the guardrail, ice slicking the metal rail, the taillights already pulling away, red smearing into the snow like something bleeding.

I remember thinking, distantly, that Midtown was the wrong direction for home.

Then the cramp hit — low, vicious, a fist closing around everything I'd been hiding for five months — and my knees buckled on the ice. I grabbed for the rail and missed. The world tipped sideways, white and silent, and the last thing I felt before the guardrail met my skull was warmth spreading beneath me on the frozen asphalt, impossible warmth, blooming out into a sky that kept falling snow like it hadn't noticed anything was wrong at all.
