Chapter 1

The voice comes first.

It's warm and steady, pulling me up from somewhere deep and dark. I don't know the voice. But my body does. My chest knows it. My hands know it.

"Welcome back, sweetheart."

I try to open my eyes. The lids are heavy. Everything is heavy. When I finally manage it, the light is wrong. Too white. Too bright. Fluorescent bars on the ceiling. The kind you see in—

A hospital.

I turn my head. It takes effort. There's a woman beside the bed. Older. Kind face. She's squeezing my hand.

"There you are," she says softly. "I'm Davina. I've been talking to you for a while now."

I try to speak. My throat is dry. The sound that comes out is barely a whisper. "How long?"

Davina's smile doesn't falter, but something shifts in her eyes. "Six years, honey."

Six years.

The words don't make sense. I was just—Grayson and I were just—

The car. The headlights. I threw myself—

"Grayson," I manage. "Is he—"

"He's fine," Davina says quickly. "He's been notified. He'll be here soon."

I close my eyes. Relief floods through me, so strong it hurts. He's fine. I saved him. That's all that matters.

I try to move my legs under the thin hospital blanket. They feel distant. Uncooperative. Panic flickers in my chest.

"Easy," Davina says. "You've been still a long time. Your body needs to remember how to work. Physical therapy will help."

Six years.

Jasper. My baby. He was two. He'd just learned to say "Mama."

Now he's—

"My son," I whisper. "Jasper. Is he—"

"He's healthy," Davina says. Her tone is careful. Too careful. "You'll see him soon."

There's something she's not saying. But before I can ask, the door opens.

Grayson.

He's holding flowers. White roses. My favorites. He stops in the doorway, and for a moment, he just looks at me. His face is older. There are lines around his eyes I don't remember. His hair is shorter.

But it's him. It's my husband.

"Keira," he says. His voice cracks a little.

I try to smile. Tears are already sliding down my face. "You're okay."

He crosses the room. Sets the flowers on the table beside the bed. He takes my hand—the one Davina just released—and squeezes it. His palm is warm.

"I'm okay," he says. "Thanks to you."

He kisses my forehead. It's brief. Careful. Like I might break.

"I can't believe you're awake," he says. He's smiling, but it doesn't reach his eyes. "The doctors said—they didn't think—"

"I'm here," I whisper. "I'm back."

He nods. Sits in the chair Davina just vacated. He's still holding my hand, but his grip is light. Polite.

"You'll be coming home soon," he says. "Once the doctors clear you. We'll get you set up. Physical therapy. Whatever you need."

Home. The word fills my chest with warmth.

"Jasper," I say. "I want to see him."

Something flickers across Grayson's face. "Soon. Let's get you stronger first. He's—he's excited to meet you."

Meet me.

The word lands wrong. But I'm too tired to question it. Too overwhelmed.

Grayson stays for another twenty minutes. He talks about logistics. The house. My recovery plan. He uses words like "timeline" and "coordination." He sounds like he's giving a presentation.

When he leaves, he kisses my forehead again. "I'm so glad you're back," he says.

The door closes behind him.

I lie in the white room and stare at the ceiling.

Six years.

Davina comes back an hour later. She checks my vitals. Adjusts my pillow.

"He seemed happy," I say quietly.

Davina glances at me. Her expression is unreadable. "I'm sure he is, honey."

But there's something in her voice. Something that sounds like pity.

I close my eyes and try to remember what Grayson's smile used to look like. The real one. The one that reached his eyes.

I can't.

Two weeks later, they discharge me.

Grayson arrives with a wheelchair. I've been practicing with the physical therapist, but my legs are still weak. Unreliable. The therapist says it'll take months. Maybe longer.

Grayson wheels me out to the car. He's quiet. Efficient. He loads the chair into the trunk and helps me into the passenger seat with the careful distance of someone handling something fragile.

The drive to Queen Anne is familiar. The streets. The trees. Pike Place Market in the distance. Everything looks the same.

But Grayson's hands are tight on the wheel. He doesn't look at me.

"I'm really okay," I say softly. "I know this is a lot. But we'll figure it out."

He nods. "Yeah. We will."

We pull into the driveway. Our house. The one we bought together. The one I painted. The one where I planted sunflowers along the back fence.

Grayson helps me into the wheelchair. He pushes me up the ramp—new, I notice—and unlocks the front door.

I wheel inside.

And stop.

There's a portrait in the entryway. Large. Professional. A family of three.

Grayson. A woman with dark hair and a warm smile. And Jasper—my Jasper—now five years old, grinning between them.

They're holding hands.

I stare at it. My brain can't process what I'm seeing.

"Keira," Grayson says behind me. His voice is tight. "Let me show you your room."

My room.

Not our room.

He wheels me past the portrait. Down the hall. To a small guest room on the first floor. There's a bed. A dresser. A window overlooking the side yard.

"It's easier," Grayson says. "For the wheelchair. The master's upstairs."

I nod slowly. My hands are shaking.

"I'll let you rest," he says. "Dinner's at six."

He leaves. Closes the door behind him.

I sit in the wheelchair in the center of the small room and stare at the wall.

Six years.

I was gone for six years.

And the world moved on without me.
