Chapter 3

I pawned my wedding ring at a 24-hour exchange kiosk on 6th Avenue. I liquidated my personal investment accounts directly from my phone. The cash secured the second OR booking, but it didn’t buy my mother time.

I sat on a hard plastic chair in the freezing corridor for four hours.

Adrian never answered his phone. His location pinged at a SoHo apartment. Vanessa’s place. A "crisis management meeting," his assistant had claimed when I called the office line.

Oliver had turned his tracking off completely. He was attending an art foundation gala with Vanessa, securing his precious networking connections while his grandmother bled out on an operating table.

The heavy double doors swung open. Dr. Evans stepped out and pulled down his surgical mask.

"Evelyn," he said. His voice lacked its usual clinical distance. "I am sorry. We did everything we could."

"Did you try the bypass?" I asked, standing up.

"We tried to clip the aneurysm, but the vessel wall had already degraded too much. The pressure was uncontrollable. She is hemorrhaging."

"Is she gone?"

"She has a few minutes left. The damage was too extensive."

"Let me see her."

He nodded, stepping aside. "Go."

The machines in the ICU beeped in a slow, failing rhythm. I rushed to the bedside and grabbed her frail hand.

Her eyelids fluttered. She looked at me, her gaze surprisingly clear for a fleeting second.

"Mom," I whispered. "I'm here."

She squeezed my fingers. Her skin felt like ice.

"Don't spend another year begging people to choose you," she rasped.

"Don't talk. Just rest. We will figure this out."

"Promise me, Evie."

"I promise."

The monitor flatlined. A sharp, continuous tone pierced the room.

I buried my face in the blankets. I cried until my vocal cords gave out, leaving me gasping in silent, hollow sobs.

An hour later, I stood at the billing desk. The night clerk slid the death certificate across the counter.

"Sign at the bottom, please," she murmured.

I signed my name on the dotted line. My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled the device out. A text from Adrian lit up the screen.

*Vanessa is willing to forgive you. Come home tonight, we'll talk about your recent emotional issues.*

I stared at the glowing letters. The burning rage in my chest extinguished instantly. It left behind a quiet, absolute void.

I didn't reply. I locked the screen and walked out into the dawn.

I walked into our Upper East Side townhouse holding a stack of empty cardboard boxes.

"Did you see it?" Oliver asked, walking into the living room. He tossed his keys onto the marble island. "Vanessa got the photographer to print it early."

I stopped. A new silver frame sat on the mantelpiece. A glossy photo of Oliver and Vanessa at the gala, smiling like a proud mother and her accomplished son.

"I am packing your grandmother's things," I said, setting the boxes down. "The funeral is Thursday at noon."

Oliver groaned, throwing his head back. "Thursday? Are you kidding me?"

"Excuse me?"

"The Columbia mixer is Thursday afternoon. I can't miss that event. I need to network with the board."

I looked at the teenager standing in front of me. "Then you don't have to come."

His jaw dropped. "What?"

"Skip the funeral. Go to your mixer."

"Vanessa said grief makes people lash out," Oliver muttered, crossing his arms. "But you're just being mean on purpose."

"I am packing boxes, Oliver. I haven't yelled once."

"You don't have to yell to be toxic!" he shot back.

Adrian strode into the room, ripping his tie off his collar. "What is going on here?"

Oliver pointed at me. "She's trying to make me feel guilty for going to the Columbia mixer instead of grandma's funeral."

"I literally told you to go to the mixer," I said calmly.

"Stop taking your anger out on the kid," Adrian snapped, stepping between us. "Your mother was old. She was sick. Do not punish Oliver for your grief."

"I am not punishing anyone," I replied. I picked up my mother's favorite wool cardigan from the armchair. I folded it neatly. I placed it inside the box.

"You are acting completely irrational," Adrian pushed, his voice rising. "Vanessa is bending over backward to keep the peace, and you are playing mind games with your own son."

"He made his priorities clear," I said.

"He is eighteen! He is building his future!" Adrian yelled. "You are being incredibly selfish right now."

I taped the box shut. The ripping sound of the adhesive echoed loudly in the large room.

"The service is at noon," I said, walking past them. "Attend or don't. It is entirely up to you."

Rain hammered the cemetery grounds on Thursday. I stood alone by the open grave, holding a black umbrella over my shoulder.

The priest finished his final prayer. I tossed a single white rose onto the casket.

Footsteps sloshed through the wet grass. I turned my head.

Vanessa walked toward me wearing a fitted black dress. Oliver walked right beside her, gripping a large umbrella to shield her from the downpour. Adrian flanked her other side, his hand resting lightly on her lower back to guide her over a puddle.

They stood together. Three people. A unified front.

"Evelyn," Vanessa whispered. She dabbed her perfectly dry eyes with a tissue. "I am so sorry for your loss. Margaret was a wonderful woman."

"Why are you here?" I asked.

"I wanted to pay my respects," she replied, her voice trembling slightly. "And to support Adrian and Oliver. We brought flowers."

She gestured to a massive wreath of white lilies. The exact same kind she had brought to the hospital.

"Take them away," I said.

"Mom, stop," Oliver snapped. "She paid a lot for those."

"I don't want her flowers on my mother's grave."

Adrian stepped forward. "Evelyn, you are embarrassing yourself. Vanessa is showing grace."

"Grace?" I asked. "She is wearing a cocktail dress to a funeral."

Vanessa gasped softly, shrinking against Adrian.

I stared at my husband. He didn't tell her to leave. He didn't even flinch.

"She has every right to be here," Adrian said, meeting my gaze. "She cared about your mother."

Oliver glared at me, his shoulders tense, daring me to make a scene. "Don't start a fight today, Mom. Just let it go."

I looked at the three of them. They looked exactly like a family. The final, frayed string tethering me to this marriage snapped.

"The service is over," I said.

I turned my back to them and walked down the paved path toward the cemetery gates.

"Evelyn, come back here!" Adrian called out.

I didn't stop. My phone vibrated in my coat pocket.

I pulled it out. An email notification flashed across the screen from the private laboratory.

*Subject: Expedited DNA Results.*

I stopped walking. Raindrops splattered against the glass screen as I opened the PDF attachment.

I bypassed the pages of medical jargon and scrolled straight to the summary at the bottom of the first page.

Bold black text stared back at me.

**Probability of maternity: 0.0000%.**

I read the numbers again. The zeros blurred together.

The boy I had raised for eighteen years, the boy currently holding an umbrella for my husband's mistress, shared no biological connection to me.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

If Oliver wasn't my son, then whose child had I been raising?

And more importantly, where was mine?
