Chapter 4

The Plaza Hotel smells like old money and fresh flowers. I stood near the coat check in a high-necked navy dress, holding a glass of champagne I hadn't touched. The cardiothoracic research foundation gala. Two hundred donors in black tie. I knew most of their names.

Kenia arrived at eight-fifteen.

She wore red — something architectural and backless that probably cost more than my first year of medical school. Nicholas's hand rested on her lower back as they moved through the ballroom. She laughed at something he said. The sound carried.

I turned back to my conversation with the foundation director. Kept my face exactly where it was.

They found me during the silent auction.

"Sariah." Kenia's voice was soft. Concerned. "I didn't know you'd be here."

I looked at her. She stood close enough that I could see the pearl earrings — my pearl earrings, the ones Nicholas gave me on our third anniversary. She'd paired them with diamonds at her throat I didn't recognize.

"It's my foundation," I said.

Her smile flickered. "Of course. I just meant — with everything that's been happening — I thought maybe some space would be good for you."

She pitched her voice just loud enough. The tables nearest us went quiet in that specific way people do when they're pretending not to listen.

"I've been praying for you," Kenia continued. Her eyes were wide. Sympathetic. "Nicholas told me how hard this has been. How you've been calling. Showing up places. It must be so painful, not being able to let go."

She reached out and touched my arm. Gentle. The way you touch someone fragile.

"I just hope you can find peace," she said.

I looked at her hand on my sleeve. I looked at her face. I didn't move.

"Get your hand off my niece."

Joanna's voice cut through the ballroom hum like a scalpel through tissue.

She stepped between us — sixty-two years old, five foot four, wearing the same black dress she'd worn to every formal event for the past decade because she thought spending money on gowns was absurd. Her face was flushed. Her hands were shaking.

"You're a thief," Joanna said. Her voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. "You're wearing stolen jewelry in a stolen life, and everyone in this room is too polite to say it."

Kenia stepped back. Her mouth opened. Closed.

"Joanna." Nicholas's voice was cold. He moved forward, positioning himself between Kenia and my aunt. "You need to leave."

"I need to leave?" Joanna laughed. It was a terrible sound. "Your wife gave you her heart — literally gave you pieces of her heart — and you're standing here with this—"

"Security." Nicholas didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

Two men in black suits materialized from the perimeter. They took Joanna by the arms.

"Don't touch her," I said.

Nobody listened.

They dragged her toward the service exit. Joanna didn't fight. She just looked at me over her shoulder — her face collapsing in real time — and mouthed something I couldn't hear over the sudden roar in my ears.

I moved toward them.

Nicholas whistled.

The dog came from somewhere behind the coat check — a German Shepherd, trained for personal security, the kind that costs thirty thousand dollars and responds only to its owner's commands. It hit me at chest height.

I went down hard. Felt my shoulder crack against marble. Felt teeth sink into my forearm.

Someone screamed.

Nicholas called the dog off. It released. Stepped back. Sat.

I lay on the floor of The Plaza Hotel ballroom in my navy dress with my arm torn open, blood spreading across white marble in a pattern like spilled wine. The chandeliers above me were very bright.

Paramedics came. I don't remember who called them. They treated me in the service corridor — the same corridor where they'd taken Joanna — while someone mopped the ballroom floor and the gala resumed. I heard music. Laughter. The clink of champagne glasses.

A young EMT with careful hands wrapped my arm in gauze. "You should go to the hospital," he said. "This needs stitches."

"I am the hospital," I said.

He looked at me for a moment. Then he finished the wrap and left.

I sat alone in the service corridor. Pressed two fingers against my sternum. Felt the scar through the fabric.

Held them there until I could stand.

---

Joanna jumped at 2:47 a.m.

The Tribeca apartment. Fourteen floors. The doorman found her.

I got the call at 3:15. I was still awake. Still sitting in my kitchen with my bandaged arm on the table, staring at nothing.

My mother answered on the first ring. I heard her voice — heard the exact moment she understood what the police officer on the other end was telling her — heard the sound a person makes when their heart stops working while they're still alive.

She died at 4:32 a.m. NYC Presbyterian. Cardiac arrhythmia, the attending said. I stood in the hallway outside her room in my bloodstained dress and listened to him explain the clinical terms.

I knew what killed her.

My father got the news at dawn. Connecticut. His study.

The housekeeper found him on the floor, surrounded by papers. Massive stroke. They airlifted him to Yale New Haven. By the time I arrived, he was unresponsive.

I stood beside his bed. Looked at his face — slack now, emptied — and felt nothing at all.

Just the scar beneath my blouse.

Just the cold.
