Chapter 5

I saw Erick before he saw me.

Grady and I were sitting outside a café two blocks from the factory. It was Thursday afternoon. Kaiya sat between us with a cup of apple juice and a cookie, her legs swinging under the table.

Grady was telling her about the ducks at the park. Something about how they remembered people who brought bread. Kaiya listened with her whole face.

Then Erick walked past on the opposite sidewalk.

He stopped. Turned. Stared.

I felt it before I saw him — that specific pressure in the air when someone is looking at you with intent.

Grady noticed my face. Followed my gaze. His jaw tightened.

Erick crossed the street. Fast. His hands were in fists.

"Raelynn."

His voice was loud. People at the other tables looked up.

I stood slowly. Put myself between him and Kaiya.

"Erick."

"What the hell is this?" He jabbed a finger toward Grady. "You're sitting here with him? With my daughter?"

Grady stood. Didn't say anything. Just stood.

Erick's face was red. "You're using him to get back at me. That's what this is."

"No."

"Don't lie to me. You show up in Seattle, take my money, and now you're parading around with my coworker like some kind of—"

He grabbed my arm.

Kaiya made a small, scared sound.

I tried to pull free. His grip tightened.

"You should have stayed in Tennessee," he hissed. "Trash like you doesn't belong here."

Grady moved. Not fast. Not aggressive. Just steady. He stepped between us and his hand closed over Erick's wrist.

"Let go."

His voice was quiet. Flat.

Erick yanked his hand back. "You think you're some kind of hero? She's using you, man. She's using you to make me look bad."

"Let go," Grady repeated.

Erick's eyes darted between us. His chest heaved.

I crouched down and picked up Kaiya. She wrapped her arms around my neck and buried her face in my shoulder. Her whole body was shaking.

I looked at Erick. At his red face. His clenched fists. The vein pulsing in his temple.

"You are nothing to me anymore."

My voice came out cold. Steady.

"Not my husband. Not my problem. Nothing."

He opened his mouth. Closed it.

"If you come near me or my daughter again without calling first, I will file a restraining order. Do you understand?"

People were staring now. A woman at the next table had her phone out.

Erick's face went white. He looked around. Saw the phones. The faces.

He stepped back. Pointed at Grady.

"This isn't over."

Then he turned and walked away. Fast. Like he was being chased.

I stood there holding Kaiya. Her breath was hot and damp against my neck.

Grady touched my shoulder. Gentle.

"You okay?"

I nodded. Didn't trust my voice.

He picked up Kaiya's juice cup. My purse. Waited.

We walked back to my apartment in silence. Kaiya didn't let go of me the entire way.

Across the city, Kataleya Garza sat at her dining table with a stack of documents spread in front of her.

Insurance papers. Bank statements. Old tax forms.

She was organizing. That's what she told herself. Just organizing.

She picked up a life insurance policy from two years ago. Scanned the beneficiary line.

*Raelynn Johnston.*

Not Clark. Johnston.

Her hand stopped.

She read it again. Checked the date. Two years before she'd met Erick.

She set the paper down carefully. Pulled out her phone. Found the contact labeled *S. Reeves — Catering.*

Dialed.

A woman answered on the second ring. "Reeves Investigations."

"My name is Kataleya Garza. I need a background check."

---

Four days later, Kataleya sat in Sandra Reeves' office on the third floor of a building downtown.

Sandra was fifty. Gray hair. Sharp suit. She slid a folder across the desk.

"Everything you asked for."

Kataleya opened it.

The first page was a marriage certificate. King County, Washington. Six years ago.

*Erick Alan Johnston and Raelynn Marie Clark.*

The second page was a birth certificate.

*Kaiya Lynn Johnston. Mother: Raelynn Marie Clark. Father: Erick Alan Johnston.*

The third page was a bank record. A wire transfer dated three weeks ago. The night of Kataleya's wedding.

*Transfer to: Raelynn M. Clark. Amount: $10,000.00.*

Kataleya stared at the pages. Her hands didn't shake. Her face didn't move.

Sandra leaned back in her chair. "Your marriage is void. He was already married when he married you. Bigamy invalidates the second marriage automatically."

Kataleya closed the folder. Set it in her lap.

"Thank you."

She stood. Paid. Walked out.

In the parking lot, she sat in her car with the folder on the passenger seat.

She didn't cry. Didn't scream. Didn't call anyone.

She sat there for forty-five minutes.

Then she started the engine and drove to her father's office.
