Chapter 3

I booked a confirmation appointment for eight the next morning.

By nine, I knew I was eight weeks pregnant.

The doctor had printed the ultrasound image, reviewed my bloodwork, and told me everything looked normal for the gestational age. I left the clinic with a white envelope in my purse and the strange feeling that I was carrying something precious through a city that had no idea my life was splitting in two.

I decided I would tell Julian after his home game that night.

Not by text. Not in front of Chloe.

I wanted one conversation where he had to look at me as his wife.

When I reached the arena that evening, I discovered he had already decided where I belonged.

My usual courtside seat was gone.

For three seasons, the chair behind the home bench had carried my credential number. It was where I sat through Julian's first start, his first playoff win, and the game he returned after knee surgery.

A nervous usher intercepted me near the family lounge.

"Mrs. Cross, your seat was reassigned this afternoon. Mr. Cross requested easier access for Miss Vaughn."

He pointed toward the back corner near the exit.

I looked down at the front row.

Chloe sat in my place wearing Julian's custom team jacket.

The sleeves swallowed her hands. Several players' wives and partners stood around her, listening with expressions that ranged from curiosity to discomfort.

I moved closer before I could talk myself out of it.

"Julian has been incredible," Chloe was saying. "He has handled every appointment. Eva has been wonderful too. She takes care of my meals at home so I can rest."

A woman named Tessa, whose husband played point guard, spotted me over Chloe's shoulder.

Her face changed.

Pity was worse than gossip.

I turned away.

The game itself passed in a blur. Julian scored twenty-six points. The crowd chanted his name. I sat near an emergency exit with my ultrasound envelope in my purse and wondered how a man could be celebrated by eighteen thousand people while making the person who knew him best feel invisible.

After the final buzzer, I waited in the family lounge.

Julian came off the floor with a towel around his neck.

He went straight to Chloe.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, crouching beside her. "Too loud? Any dizziness?"

I walked down the aisle.

"Julian."

He glanced up. "Not now, Eva."

"I need five minutes."

"Can it wait until we get home?"

"No."

My hand slid into my purse and closed around the clinic envelope.

Chloe suddenly sucked in a breath.

She bent forward and pressed both hands to her stomach.

"Julian."

His attention snapped to her.

"What? What is it?"

"A cramp. Sharp."

He was on his feet before she finished the sentence.

"We're going to the hospital."

He wrapped an arm around her waist.

Then he looked at me.

"Go home and pack a bag for her. Prenatal vitamins, charger, something comfortable. Bring it to St. Matthew's."

I stared at him.

"No."

The word landed harder than a shout.

"Eva."

"I am not packing your pregnant mistress an overnight bag."

"Can you stop turning every emergency into a competition?"

"I am trying to talk to my husband."

"And I am trying to make sure a baby is safe."

He guided Chloe toward the private exit.

The envelope in my purse crumpled under my hand.

I went home alone.

I did not pack a bag.

Instead, I opened our banking portal at the dining table.

If Julian could move joint money without telling me, I needed to know exactly what else he could touch.

The future-family account showed a zero balance.

I opened the transfer history.

Every dollar had moved into a new account labeled Cross Heir Medical Trust.

When I tried to open the trust details, the portal denied access.

I called the bank.

After a long hold, a representative confirmed what I already suspected.

"Mr. Cross is listed as the primary holder on the original account," she said. "He was permitted to transfer the balance. The receiving trust is separately controlled, so your online access does not carry over."

"Can he move money from our other joint accounts the same way?"

"That depends on the account structure. I recommend reviewing each one with counsel if you have concerns."

Counsel.

The word sounded dramatic.

Then I looked at the zero on my screen.

Maybe dramatic had already arrived.

I created a folder on my laptop and downloaded everything I could access: statements, mortgage records, credit-card histories, transfers, insurance documents, tax summaries.

I had spent years organizing Julian's career. I knew how to build a timeline.

This time, I built one for myself.

Then I opened the university portal and submitted the last piece of my readmission application.

Application Received.

A quiet relief moved through me.

I carried my blue binder upstairs with my transcripts and set them beside the bed.

For years I had told myself I was waiting for the right season to go back. After Julian's knee. After his contract renewal. After we bought the house. After we started a family.

There would always be another reason to postpone myself.

I was done waiting.

It was after midnight when Julian came in.

He looked exhausted.

"False alarm," he said, pulling off his hoodie. "The doctor says Chloe had a normal stretching pain. Baby is fine."

He did not ask why I never came.

He did not ask what I had wanted to tell him.

I sat up in bed and reached for my purse.

"Julian, I need to tell you something."

His phone buzzed.

He read the screen.

His face changed.

"Did you threaten her tonight?"

My hand froze around the ultrasound envelope.

"What?"

"Chloe says you cornered her before the game and told her she would regret moving into this house."

"That never happened."

"She is scared of you."

I stood up. "Then show me exactly what she wrote. Better yet, ask the arena to pull the family-lounge cameras. I was never alone with her."

"I do not need security footage to see how you've behaved since she arrived. You refused the appointment. You refused to help at the hospital. You spent the whole game glaring at her."

"She took my seat and told everyone I cook for her."

"Because you have been hostile from day one."

"You moved the woman you cheated with into my house on day one."

His voice rose. "She is pregnant, Eva. Her stress matters."

I almost laughed at the cruelty of it.

I had an ultrasound image in my hand.

I had spent the whole night carrying our child like a secret because he could not spare me five minutes.

"You want to know what matters?" I said.

I started to pull the image from the envelope.

He cut me off.

"Tomorrow morning, you are going to apologize to Chloe."

I looked at him.

"No."

His expression went cold.

"Then maybe you should not stay here. I will not have you making a pregnant woman feel unsafe under my roof."

Under my roof.

Not ours.

The ultrasound photo slid back into the envelope.

I tucked it into my purse.

Julian turned away, already convinced the conversation was over.

I looked at the man who had spent three years calling me his partner.

Then I understood the real threat.

He was not asking me to apologize.

He was telling me that if I refused to serve the woman carrying his possible heir, he would remove me from the life I had helped build.
