Chapter 1

"Eight years, Harper Ellis." Graham raised his glass toward me. "And you still look at me like I'm trouble."

"You are trouble," I said.

He laughed. My husband had a laugh that sold things. It sold juries. It sold the three million people who watched his legal videos every week. For eight years, it had sold me.

Graham Whitaker. Boston's most famous divorce lawyer. He owned his own firm, and he had a face that looked good on billboards. Online, women called him "the husband every wife deserves." He had married me, the girl from three houses down. We had grown up together.

Outside our tall windows, the maple trees were burning red. Inside, our four-year-old son, Milo, sat cross-legged on the rug and lined up his toy cars in perfect rows.

"Okay." Graham clapped his hands once. "After-dinner game. Truth or dare."

I sank deeper into the couch and swirled my wine. "Since when do you play games?"

"Since tonight." He winked. "I promised you an anniversary you'll never forget, didn't I?"

"You promised me a lot of things four years ago, too."

The words slipped out lighter than I meant them. Or maybe heavier.

His smile stalled. Only for a second.

"Harper."

"I'm just saying." I tapped the rim of my glass. "I told you back then. Loyalty is the one line you don't cross. Not twice."

He leaned down and pressed his lips to my forehead. His cologne was warm, like cedar and money.

"I'm not that man anymore," he murmured. "You know that."

"Do I?"

"You do." He straightened and pointed at Milo. "Buddy, you're the judge. Daddy goes first. Truth."

Milo looked up. He didn't smile. Milo rarely smiled at games. He watched them.

Graham turned the questions toward me. Who was my first crush? Him, obviously. What did I hate most about his driving? Everything. Milo rolled a car across the rug and said nothing.

My phone buzzed against my hip. I pulled it out without thinking, an old habit from my therapy practice. Clients texted at odd hours.

It wasn't a client. It was a video app, auto-playing.

A woman's face filled the screen. Young. Glossy lips. A messy bun.

I knew her.

Tessa Ward. She cleaned our house twice a week. She had scrubbed my bathtub on Tuesday.

"So people keep asking how I did it," Tessa purred to the camera. "How do you keep a rich, married man hooked for four whole years? Honestly? You give him what his wife doesn't."

I almost laughed. My thumb hovered to swipe away.

The comments flooded in.

*Why would you wreck someone's family??*

Tessa had pinned her own reply.

*His wife caught us four years ago lol. But then I had his son. We never really stopped.*

The video cut to a clip. A man's arm around her waist. Just the arm, no face.

A Patek Philippe on his left wrist. Silver and blue.

My eyes dropped to the coffee table, where Graham had set down his own watch before dinner. Silver. Blue.

Then the man's right hand slid up her back. A small brown mole sat on the side of his thumb.

I knew that mole. I had kissed that mole on our wedding night.

The room went cold. Not the air. Me.

"Harper? Your turn to ask." Graham's voice sounded far away.

I set the phone face down on my knee.

"Actually," he said, before I could speak. He lifted his glass. Calm. Easy. Like he was telling me it might rain tomorrow. "I'll do another truth."

"Graham—"

"Truth." He smiled at me. "Four years ago, I cheated and you caught me. And four years later, tonight? We still haven't ended it."

The ringing started in my ears.

Four years ago. The hospital bed. The blood. The doctor's soft voice saying *I'm so sorry, Mrs. Whitaker, there's no heartbeat.* The therapist I had to see, even though I *was* a therapist. Waking up screaming at three in the morning with my hands on my empty stomach.

"What did you say?" My voice came out flat.

"Babe." He tilted his head. "Your face."

"Is that a joke?"

"Is it?" His eyes sparkled. "Truth or dare, Harper. That's the game."

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a long velvet box. Inside lay a sapphire necklace, deep blue, almost black.

"Happy anniversary," he said.

He walked behind me. His fingers brushed my neck as he fastened the clasp. The stones dropped cold against my collarbone.

The same blue as the watch in the video.

I sat very still. Milo had stopped moving his cars. He was studying my face the way I study clients who are lying to themselves.

*Not in front of him. Not in front of your son.*

I reached into my cardigan pocket and found the small orange bottle. My hands shook so badly the pills rattled like a toy.

"Harper." Graham's tone sharpened. "What are you doing?"

"Breathing." I shook one pill into my palm and swallowed it dry. "I'm breathing, Graham."

I counted. In for four. Hold for four. Out for four. I had taught it to a hundred patients. It had never felt so useless.

"Look at me," I said.

He came around the couch.

"If what you just said is true," I said slowly, "if it's happening again, I won't forgive you. Not this time. Not ever."

For one heartbeat, nothing on his face moved.

Then he dropped to his knees in front of me. He grabbed both my hands and squeezed so hard my wedding ring bit into my finger.

"Harper. Sweetheart. It was a stupid line. A dumb game." His voice cracked in all the right places. "There's been no one but you. Not for four years. That mistake is dead and buried, I swear to God."

"Swear on Milo."

"I swear on our son."

His eyes were wet. Real tears. Graham could cry on cue in court. I knew that. I had watched him do it.

But I was so tired. And the necklace was so heavy. And he was kneeling, and he had never knelt before.

Maybe the video was someone else. Lots of men wear expensive watches. Lots of men have moles.

My grip on his fingers loosened. Just a little.

Behind him, Milo set down his red car. Carefully. The way he always put things down.

"Harper," he said.

Not *Mommy.* Harper.

His small voice was serious. Clear.

"You're not my real mom. Daddy's other lady is."

Nothing in the room made a sound. Not the clock. Not the wind against the glass.

I stared at the little boy I had rocked through fevers. The boy I had nursed—no. The boy I had bottle-fed, because the doctors said my body was too weak after the premature delivery. The boy Graham had handed me in a hospital blanket three weeks after I lost our baby, saying *a private adoption, a miracle, don't ask questions, just love him.*

I looked down at my husband.

He was still on his knees. Still holding my hands.

But the tears were gone. For half a second, his whole face went white, and his eyes darted to Milo—wide, panicked, terrified.

Not the look of a man caught in an affair.

The look of a man whose grave had just been dug up.
