My Husband Made Me a Maid in the House I Once Owned Chapter 1

Emma's POV

The address on my phone led me straight to the house I'd called home since childhood.

I stood at the iron gate in the pale gray uniform from Brightway Home Services, a plastic cleaning caddy hanging from my wrist. Glass cleaner, white vinegar, rubber gloves, and a stack of microfiber cloths knocked against each other as the gate rolled open.

The first thing I saw was the olive tree. My father had planted it the summer I turned sixteen, kneeling in the dirt in his good slacks because he refused to let the landscapers do it. Behind it stood the white villa he'd placed in the Harrison Residential Trust for me two years before I ever met Daniel.

The client name on the order read *Vanessa Lane*.

I didn't turn around. Brightway had already warned me that one more cancellation would cost me my shifts next week, and my rent would hold out for exactly twelve more days.

So I rang my own doorbell.

The woman who opened the door was maybe thirty, blonde, in a silk robe the color of champagne. She looked at my name badge, not my face.

"You're the cleaner? Good." She pushed a printed checklist into my hand and pointed toward the staircase. "The owner likes everything spotless. Start with the master suite."

"Of course," I said.

I followed her through the foyer. My father's bronze horse still stood on the marble pedestal where he'd placed it, one hoof raised mid-stride. But the small brass plaque at its base was gone. Four tiny screw holes marked where *HARRISON* used to be.

On the wall above it, our family portrait had been replaced by a black-and-white print of the ocean.

The oak floors creaked on the third step, the way they always had. I used to skip that step when I came home late so I wouldn't wake Dad.

Daniel had promised me he'd protect everything my father left behind. I'd believed him enough to hand him the keys.

---

The master closet still smelled faintly of cedar.

Vanessa slid the doors open and gestured at a row of gowns. "These need steaming. I'm picking one for the Children's Hospital gala tonight, and they're all wrinkled from storage."

I recognized every one of them. The midnight-blue Carolina Herrera. The ivory column dress my mother's tailor had fitted to me the spring before Dad got sick. Someone had ripped out the hanger tags, but when I turned the ivory gown inside out, the lining still carried three small stitched letters.

*EMH.*

"Is there a problem?" Vanessa asked.

"No." I plugged in the steamer. "They're beautiful."

"They were here when I moved in. Daniel said the last woman just left them." She shrugged and drifted downstairs.

Down in the kitchen, the espresso machine hissed to life. The sound went straight through me.

The week of Dad's surgery, Daniel had made my coffee every morning. Two sugars, always. He'd press the warm cup into my freezing hands in that hospital hallway and say, *Don't worry about anything outside this room, Em. I've got it.*

I was steaming the hem of the ivory dress when the front lock clicked.

Footsteps on the stairs. Third step creaked.

Daniel walked into the bedroom, loosening his tie, and stopped halfway through the door.

His eyes found my face first. Then they dropped to the Brightway badge pinned to my chest, then to the steamer in my hand. For half a second, something flickered across his face. Then it was gone, smoothed over like it had never been there.

Vanessa came up behind him with two espresso cups. "Babe, you're early. Do you know her or something? You're staring."

I waited for him to say it. *That's my wife.* Or at least, *She shouldn't be here.*

Daniel draped his jacket over the back of the reading chair. My father's reading chair.

"She's very good at cleaning," he said. "You should keep her."

Vanessa laughed and kissed his cheek. I turned back to the dress and kept steaming, because my hands needed something to do besides shake.

---

Vanessa sent me to the study next.

Dad's walnut desk was gone. In its place sat a glossy black slab with nothing on it but a laptop and a crystal paperweight. Beside the shredder, a cardboard box was waiting for disposal, and on top sat a thick white binder.

I lifted it to wipe the shelf underneath. The label on the spine read *DCR Holdings Acquisition File.*

I shouldn't have opened it. I opened it anyway.

The first page was a transfer summary. The Beverly Hills property, moved from the Harrison Residential Trust into DCR Holdings, LLC. A chain of signatures. A consideration amount so low it was insulting.

Then the authorization confirmation. My name typed under the signature line. A date beside it.

Eleven days before my father died.

That entire afternoon, I'd been at Cedars-Sinai. A nurse named Rosa had taken a photo of me asleep in the chair beside Dad's bed, his hand in mine, and texted it to me because she thought I'd want it someday. It was still on my phone.

I turned the page. A statement filed by Daniel Reyes, acting as attorney-in-fact. Attached was a separate authorization bearing a notary seal from someone named Gerald Pruitt in Glendale. I'd never heard of him.

My mind went back to that hospital hallway. Daniel with a folder under his arm, telling me there were "just a few things that have to be signed right now, before it gets complicated." And afterward, the weeks he wouldn't let me near my email. *You need rest, Em. I'm handling it.*

"Put that down."

Daniel stood in the doorway. He didn't rush toward me. He didn't have to.

"This is dated the eleventh," I said. "I was at Cedars all day. I have pictures."

"You signed a lot of things that month."

"Not this. I never met this notary. I've never been to Glendale in my life."

"You were exhausted. You don't remember half of what happened." He stepped in and took the binder from my hands, his fingers brushing mine like it meant nothing. "You signed what I put in front of you. Don't rewrite history because you hate where it left you."

I looked at him for a long moment. Seven years of marriage, and he'd never once told me a lie this calmly.

"Okay," I said.

He frowned, like he'd expected a fight. I picked up my cloth and started dusting the bookshelf. He stood there a minute longer, then set the binder back on the desk and walked out.

He didn't take it with him. To Daniel, it was already trash.

---

I waited until I heard the shower running upstairs.

Then I carried the binder into the laundry room with a basket of towels, shut the door, and wedged a step stool against it.

I photographed every page. Transfer documents. The notary's commission number. The DCR Holdings entity number with the California Secretary of State. Daniel's attorney-in-fact statement, word by word. My phone buzzed with a low-storage warning, and I deleted my music to make room.

When I was done, I sent the whole batch to an old Yahoo address I'd made in college and never once mentioned to Daniel.

Then I dug into my wallet and pried open the torn lining. Behind my expired gym card was a business card Dad's estate attorney had pressed into my hand at the funeral. *If anything ever feels wrong, call her.*

*Lena Park. Litigation.*

I typed with my thumb, deleted it, typed again.

*Ms. Park, this is Emma Harrison. I found a document that may change the asset findings in my divorce.*

I hit send before I could talk myself out of it.

Next, I pulled up the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder site and searched the property address. I paid the fourteen dollars for a certified copy of the deed, which left my checking account at two hundred and six dollars.

*Order Confirmed.*

I stared at that screen longer than I needed to. For the first time in eight months, I didn't feel like someone who'd been thrown out of her own life. I felt like someone collecting receipts.

I put the binder back exactly where I'd found it, beside the shredder, angled the same way.

At six, I was loading my caddy into the trunk of my Corolla when my phone rang. Brightway.

"Hey, Emma, it's Tasha from scheduling. The Lane client called. She loved you. She wants a standing booking for the whole month. Five days a week. You interested? I know it's a long drive for you."

I looked up at the house. The master bedroom light was on, and through the window I could see Daniel's silhouette fastening his cufflinks.

"Tell the agency I'll take the full month," I said.

"Seriously? Great. I'll text you the confirmation."

My phone chimed a second later. *Schedule confirmed: Lane Residence, Mon–Fri, 8:00 a.m.*

Daniel thought he'd hired a maid.

He'd just given me a key.
