Chapter 2

Marie didn't wait for me to answer. She stepped back from the doorway with a sweeping, theatrical gesture—a queen granting an audience—and the emerald silk of her robe rippled like water over the swell of her belly.

"Come in," she said. Her voice carried the honeyed edge of triumph. "Since you're already here."

I walked past her into the suite. The space was obscene in its luxury. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed a crystalline view of Central Park, the autumn foliage a riot of gold and crimson. The furniture was upholstered in cream leather. A cashmere throw was artfully draped over the arm of a velvet sofa. Everything gleamed.

Marie closed the door behind me with a soft, definitive click.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" She moved past me, one hand trailing along the back of the sofa, the other cradling her stomach in a gesture so practiced it looked rehearsed. "Roland has excellent taste. But then, you already know that."

I didn't respond. I was cataloging. The Hermès diaper bag on the console table, still wrapped in tissue. The stack of Bergdorf boxes, each tied with signature ribbon. A vase of pink peonies—Roland's mother's favorite flower—positioned on the marble side table like a declaration.

Marie followed my gaze and smiled. "He sent those this morning. He's very attentive."

She walked to the bassinet and ran her fingers along its edge. The wood was pale and pristine, hand-carved, probably Scandinavian. It cost at least fifteen thousand dollars. I knew because I had bookmarked the same model six months ago, back when I still believed I would need one.

"Everything you see," Marie continued, turning to face me fully, "Roland pays for. This suite. The private nursing staff. The wardrobe." She gestured toward the walk-in closet, its door ajar to reveal rows of maternity couture. "He set up an account for me eighteen months ago. No limits. No questions."

Eighteen months.

I smoothed the edge of my sleeve cuff. The silk was cool beneath my thumb.

"Eighteen months," I repeated. My voice was perfectly level. "That would place the start of your arrangement three months before my wedding."

Marie's smile widened. "Oh, honey. Our relationship started long before that. Roland and I go back years. He just... took a detour." Her eyes raked over me, assessing, dismissive. "But he always comes back to me."

I looked at her—really looked at her. The confidence in her posture. The possessive curve of her hand over her belly. She believed every word she was saying. She had constructed an entire narrative in which she was the heroine, the inevitable winner, and I was merely an intermission.

"Which account does he use?" I asked.

The question landed wrong. Marie blinked, her smile faltering for a fraction of a second. "What?"

"The account he opened for you. Which bank?"

She recovered quickly, lifting her chin. "Chase. Private client services. Why?"

"And the emergency contact number on file downstairs," I continued, my tone unchanged, as though we were discussing the weather. "The one linked to this suite. When did he give you that number?"

Marie's eyes narrowed. She had expected tears, or rage, or at the very least a dramatic confrontation she could recount later as proof of her victory. Instead, I was asking her questions like an auditor.

"He gave it to me when I told him I was pregnant," she said slowly. "Why does it matter?"

I didn't answer. I had what I needed. The timeline. The account. The phone number. The architecture of Roland's double life, mapped out in two brief, clinical questions.

I turned toward the door.

"That's it?" Marie's voice rose, sharp with confusion and something else—something that sounded almost like disappointment. "You're just leaving?"

I paused, my hand on the brushed-nickel door handle, and looked back at her over my shoulder. She stood framed by the window, backlit by the autumn sun, her belly round and full beneath the emerald silk. She looked like a portrait of triumph. But her eyes were uncertain now, searching my face for the reaction she had been promised.

"Enjoy the peonies," I said.

I walked out and let the door close softly behind me.

The corridor was silent. My heels made no sound on the plush carpet as I walked back toward the elevator. My hands were steady. My breathing was even. Inside my chest, something had crystallized into absolute, diamond-hard clarity.

The elevator doors slid open. I stepped inside and pressed the button for the lobby. As the car descended, I caught my reflection in the mirrored walls. I looked exactly the same. Composed. Elegant. Untouchable.

The woman looking back at me was a stranger. And she was done being Roland Patterson's wife.

The lobby opened before me in a sweep of white marble and recessed lighting. I walked toward the seating area near the entrance, my mind already moving through the sequence of calls I would need to make. Divorce attorney. Bank. Accountant.

Behind the reception desk, Diana Chen was on the phone, her voice low and urgent. She glanced up as I passed, her eyes widening with a flash of something—guilt, perhaps, or warning.

She was talking to Roland.

Of course she was. Protocol dictated that any data irregularity involving shared contact information required immediate clarification with all parties involved. Diana had done exactly what she was supposed to do.

She had just lit the fuse.

I didn't stop walking. I sank into one of the leather armchairs near the window and crossed my legs, my hands folded neatly in my lap. Outside, the city moved in its relentless, indifferent rhythm. Yellow cabs. Pedestrians. The ordinary world, continuing as though mine hadn't just ended.

I waited.

Roland would be here soon.
