Chapter 4

The gala was held at the Plaza. Black tie. Chandeliers like frozen fireworks. I wore the navy dress I'd found in the back of my old closet, the one from before Newark, before everything. It hung differently now. Looser at the waist. Tighter at the shoulders.

I moved through the ballroom like I belonged there. Smiled at the right moments. Accepted champagne I didn't drink. Watched Gavin across the room, his hand at the small of Elodie's back, guiding her through clusters of donors who leaned in to hear her speak.

She wore white. Of course she wore white.

I waited until he stepped away. Watched him excuse himself, heading toward the private corridor that led to the restrooms and the service elevator. The same corridor where we used to steal moments during events like this, years ago, when he'd pull me close and kiss me like we had a secret the rest of the world wasn't in on.

I followed.

The corridor was empty. Quiet. The noise from the ballroom faded to a distant hum. Gavin stood near the far window, checking his phone, his profile sharp against the city lights beyond the glass.

"Gavin."

He turned. Saw me. His expression didn't change. Just that same smooth neutrality, like I was a minor scheduling conflict.

"Laura. You should be inside."

"I need you to listen to me."

"We've been through this."

"No." I stepped closer. Kept my voice level. "You've talked. You've decided. You haven't listened."

He sighed. Slipped his phone into his pocket. "I have a room full of donors waiting."

"Look at me."

Something in my voice made him stop. Made him actually meet my eyes.

I rolled up my left sleeve. Slowly. Let him see the three scars running parallel down my forearm, thin and pale and permanent.

"I got these in Newark," I said. "In a warehouse off Route 1. I was chained to a radiator for three hundred and forty-seven days. They didn't feed me every day. Sometimes they didn't feed me for a week. I learned to count the sounds of the trucks outside to track time. I memorized guard rotations. I hid sharpened plastic under my mattress."

Gavin's jaw tightened. "Laura—"

"I sent you a coded letter. Through a delivery driver I bribed with two hundred dollars I stole from a guard's jacket. I told you where I was. I told you who took me. I told you to look at Elodie's bank records from April of last year."

His face went very still.

"You never got it," I continued. "Because Elodie intercepted it. She's been intercepting everything. The whole time."

"That's not—"

"Look at Ethan." My voice stayed calm. Factual. "He drops to his knees when she enters a room. He apologizes for breathing. He hides his stuffed animal inside his shirt because he's learned that wanting things gets him hurt. That's not sensitivity, Gavin. That's conditioning."

For one second — one agonizing, impossible second — something moved behind his eyes. Doubt. Recognition. The faintest crack in the wall he'd built.

He opened his mouth.

"Gavin?"

Elodie's voice. Soft. Uncertain. Coming from the corridor entrance behind me.

I didn't turn. I watched Gavin's face. Watched the crack seal over like it had never been there.

Elodie appeared at my shoulder. Her eyes were already wet. Her hand went to her collarbone, fingers trembling against the white silk.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't mean to interrupt. I just — I heard raised voices and I got worried." She looked at Gavin, not me. "Is everything okay?"

Gavin's expression smoothed. Completely. Like a lake going still after a stone.

"Everything's fine," he said.

Elodie's breath hitched. "Laura, I know you're going through something so difficult. I can't even imagine. But Gavin has been under so much stress, and tonight is really important for the foundation, and—" Her voice broke. Perfectly. "I just want everyone to be okay."

I looked at her. At the tears that hadn't fallen. At the hand pressed to her collarbone like she was holding herself together.

Then I looked back at Gavin.

He was already reaching for Elodie. His hand found hers. Squeezed.

"I think it's best if we expedite your evaluation," he said to me. His voice was gentle. Reasonable. Final. "Dr. Hale mentioned a facility in Connecticut. I'll have my assistant make the arrangements."

I didn't move. Didn't speak.

Gavin stepped past me, Elodie's hand still in his, and walked back toward the ballroom. Toward the chandeliers and the donors and the life that had already erased me.

I stood in the empty corridor. Listened to their footsteps fade.

Then I pulled out my phone. The encrypted one. Sent a single text to the number Raphael had given me.

*Saturday. The yacht. Be ready.*

I deleted the message. Slipped the phone back into my purse.

Then I walked back into the gala. Retrieved my coat from the check. Smiled at the attendant.

And left.
