Chapter 1

The Saturday barbecue at Joint Base Lewis-McChord was loud, bright, and thick with smoke. I sat at the far edge of the lawn, in the only patch of shade. Blitz lay across my boots. His gray muzzle rested on my ankle.

Across the grass, my husband stood at the grill. Major Rex Ferguson. Pressed polo, polished watch, a smile made for photos. His hand sat low on Marilyn Munoz's back.

Marilyn ran the base morale-and-welfare office. Right now she was holding a bottle of root beer like it weighed fifty pounds.

“It’s stuck,” she breathed. “I’m so useless, Rex.”

“Here, sweetheart.” He popped the cap with his thumb and laughed like she’d won a prize.

I counted to ten. Then I stood. Blitz stood too, slowly, his back left leg dragging half a beat behind. I rested my palm on his head. *Easy. Stay with me.*

I walked over. “Rex. Blitz’s vet appointment is Wednesday. I need the car.”

He flipped a burger. He didn’t look up. “Not now.”

“It’s his joint injection. If we miss it—”

“Stop.” He waved the spatula like he was shooing a fly. “Don’t embarrass me with dog talk. Not here.”

“It’s one question.”

“It’s one too many.” His eyes finally found mine. Flat. Bored. “Go sit down, Sienna.”

Marilyn leaned toward a cluster of wives and whispered. Heads turned. Soft, wounded faces, like I was a stray at a funeral. One woman pressed a hand to her chest.

I went back to my shade. Blitz leaned his whole weight against my knee. Warm. Solid.

That was enough. It had to be.

---

That night, Rex dropped his keys in the bowl by the door. He didn’t take off his shoes.

“That rig takes up half the utility room,” he said. “And he stinks. The whole house smells like him.”

I kept drying the same plate.

“You need to start thinking about letting go.”

“He stays.”

Three words. I said them quietly. Not a tremor in them.

Rex froze with his hand halfway to his collar. For one second, he looked at me like he’d never seen me before. Then he scoffed and snatched his keys back up.

“You’re being dramatic.”

The door shut. His headlights swept across the kitchen wall, heading off base. Toward Marilyn’s apartment. I didn’t have to guess.

I slid down to the kitchen floor. Blitz limped over and put his head in my lap. I found the knotted muscle above his bad hock and worked it in slow circles, the way I’d done every night for three years.

My face stayed still. My hands never shook.

Upstairs, in a locked box under the bed, were medals Rex had never asked about.

---

Monday, the rec center smelled like floor wax and sheet cake. A banner hung over the door. *Military Family Appreciation Week.*

I was heading for the exit when Marilyn stepped into the hallway and blocked it. Her perfume hit me first. Vanilla, thick as syrup.

“Sienna.” Her voice went soft and sad. “I just wanted you to hear this from a friend.”

“We’re not friends.”

“Everyone finds it so sad.” She tilted her head. “How you cling to that broken animal. Rex is just worried about you. He’s been talking about having it removed.”

“It has a name.”

“Of course.” She touched my sleeve. I looked at her fingers until she took them back.

I didn’t answer. I just looked at her. No blinking. No anger. I looked at her the way I used to look at a recruit who thought he could lie to me.

Her smile wobbled. Slipped. Died.

I walked around her and out into the gray afternoon. Behind me, I heard her heels click once, hard, like a trigger.

---

Two days later, I came home from the pharmacy with Blitz’s joint medication in a paper bag.

A base security truck sat in front of our quarters. Its lights were turning, silent.

Marilyn stood on my porch. Her shoulders were shaking. Her left forearm was wrapped in fresh white gauze. Two wives hovered beside her, one on each arm.

“He lunged at me,” Marilyn sobbed. “I only came to drop off a casserole. I’m allergic, I could have *died*.”

“It’s true,” one wife said. “She was gasping.”

A young security officer looked at me. “Ma’am, we need to ask about the dog.”

I didn’t answer. I pushed past them and went to the utility room.

Blitz was wedged in the back corner, belly low, ears flat. He was trembling.

His hydration rig lay across the floor. I had built it by hand, tube by tube, over two winters. Now the frame was snapped. The line was cut clean. The reservoir was cracked and dripping.

I knelt and put my hand on his chest. His heart hammered under my palm.

The floor was wet. The cut was too straight to be a dog’s.

I stood up and turned around.

“Blitz didn’t bite anyone,” I said.

Marilyn dabbed her eyes. The officer looked down at his notepad. The wives shook their heads at me, slowly, in perfect sync.

Nobody wrote it down.
