Chapter 1

The address came in a plain white envelope. No return label. No note. Just a number and a street name written in tight, careful handwriting that wasn't mine.

I held it for three days before I did anything. I set it on the kitchen counter. Moved it to the desk. Put it in a drawer. Took it out again. Each time I looked at it, my chest got tighter.

Three years. Three years since they told me Wren was dead. Three years since I stood on the dock in the rain and watched them pull pieces of the boat out of the water. Three years since I stopped sleeping through the night.

I drove to the address on a Thursday morning. The house sat on a quiet street outside Seattle, tucked behind iron gates and tall hedges. Clean lines. Big windows. The kind of place that costs more than most people make in a lifetime.

I parked across the street and sat there for twenty minutes. My hands were shaking. I told myself I was being stupid. That this was nothing. That someone made a mistake or played a cruel joke.

But I got out of the car anyway.

The gate wasn't locked. It swung open when I pushed it. I walked up the stone path to the front door and pressed the bell. No answer. I tried the handle.

It turned.

The first thing I saw was shoes. A pair of men's loafers by the door, size eleven, the same brand Wren always wore. Next to them, a pair of red heels tipped on their sides.

I stepped inside. The air smelled like coffee and something floral. Jasmine, maybe. The kind of scent that clings to expensive candles.

I moved through the foyer into the living room. Soft gray furniture. Art on the walls. A throw blanket draped over the couch like someone just got up and left it there.

On the mantel, there were photographs in silver frames.

I walked closer. My legs felt like they weren't mine.

The first photo showed a man and a woman on a beach. The man had his arm around her waist. He was laughing. The woman wore a white sundress and oversized sunglasses. Her hair was long and dark, pulled over one shoulder.

I knew that face.

Arlet.

My half-sister.

I picked up the frame with both hands. My fingers left prints on the glass.

The second photo was taken at a restaurant. The same man leaning across the table, kissing her cheek. The third showed them in front of the Eiffel Tower. The fourth was a close-up, just their hands intertwined, a diamond ring on her finger.

I set the frame down carefully. My hands were still shaking, but now it wasn't fear. It was something else. Something colder.

I heard footsteps on the stairs.

I turned.

Wren stood on the landing, halfway down. He wore a white t-shirt and jeans. His hair was longer than I remembered. He looked good. Healthy. Alive.

He froze when he saw me.

For a long moment, neither of us moved. Neither of us spoke.

Then he said my name.

"Emerald."

His voice cracked on the second syllable.

I didn't say anything. I just looked at him. At the man I thought I'd lost. The man I'd cried over until I had nothing left. The man whose name I still whispered in my sleep.

"I can explain," he said.

I laughed. It came out sharp and ugly. "Explain."

"I didn't have a choice."

"You didn't have a choice," I repeated. My voice sounded flat. Distant. Like it belonged to someone else.

He came down the rest of the stairs slowly, one hand on the railing. "My father—he said if I didn't disappear, he'd destroy you. He had lawyers, investigators, people who could make your life hell. I thought if I stayed away, you'd be safe."

"Safe," I said.

He took a step toward me. I took a step back.

"I was going to come back," he said. "I was always going to come back. I just needed time to figure out how to—"

"Wren."

Arlet's voice floated down from upstairs. Soft. Sweet. Familiar.

I looked past him. She stood at the top of the stairs now, one hand resting on the banister. The other hand rested on her stomach.

She was pregnant.

She met my eyes and smiled. Not a big smile. Just a small curve of her lips. The kind of smile that said everything without saying anything at all.

I looked back at Wren. "How long?"

"Emerald—"

"How long have you been here? With her?"

He didn't answer.

I walked past him to the mantel and picked up the beach photo again. I turned it over. On the back, written in blue ink: *Santorini, June 2021.*

One year after his death.

I set it down and picked up the Eiffel Tower photo. *Paris, April 2022.*

Two years.

I looked at the close-up of their hands. No date on that one. But the ring looked new. The kind of new that still catches the light.

"Three years," I said quietly.

Wren didn't deny it.

I set the frame down and turned to face him. "You've been here the whole time."

"It wasn't like that," he said. His voice was rising now. Desperate. "I didn't plan this. I didn't want this. But she was there, and I was alone, and my father kept saying—"

"Stop."

He stopped.

I walked past him toward the door. My legs were steadier now. My hands had stopped shaking.

"Emerald, wait—"

I didn't wait. I walked out the door, down the path, through the gate. I got in my car and sat there for a long time, staring at the house through the windshield.

Inside, I could see Wren standing in the window. Watching me.

I started the engine and drove away.
