Chapter 3

Bonnie's spare room smelled like lavender detergent and old books. I sat on the edge of the twin bed and stared at my suitcase. I hadn't unpacked it. Unpacking felt permanent.

"Coffee," Bonnie said from the doorway.

She handed me a mug. Hot. Black. Exactly how I liked it.

"Thanks," I said.

She sat down beside me. "We start today."

I nodded.

"I need you to give me everything," she continued. "Every password. Every account number. Every login you have."

I pulled out my phone. Opened the notes app. Started typing.

"Joint checking," I said. "Joint savings. The investment account he said was for retirement. The credit cards."

"Good." Bonnie was already writing. "What about his personal accounts?"

"I don't have access."

"That's fine. We'll subpoena them." She looked up. "This is going to get ugly, Stella. You know that, right?"

"I know."

"He's going to fight. His family is going to fight. They're going to say things about you."

"Let them."

She studied my face for a moment. Then she squeezed my hand. "Okay. Let's go to work."

---

Bonnie's dining table disappeared under paper.

Bank statements. Wire confirmations. Account change notifications. She'd pulled everything. Three years of transactions spread across the wood in chronological rows.

"Look at this," she said. She pointed to a transfer dated October 2021. "Twelve thousand dollars. Sent on a Friday at 4:47 p.m."

I leaned closer.

"Right before the bank closes for the weekend," Bonnie continued. "So you wouldn't see the notification until Monday. And by then—"

"By then he'd already told me we were fine," I finished. "He always checked the accounts on Monday mornings. He'd tell me the balance and I'd just... believe him."

Bonnie's jaw tightened. She moved to the next row.

"Here. February 2022. Eighteen thousand. Sent at 11:53 p.m."

"I was asleep," I said quietly.

"Yeah." Bonnie's voice was flat. "He waited until you were asleep."

She pulled another sheet. "And here's where it gets worse. Six months ago, he changed the account settings. Routed all transaction alerts to his email only. You stopped getting notifications entirely."

I stared at the paper. The date was circled in red.

"He locked me out," I said.

"He locked you out," Bonnie confirmed. "Slowly. Carefully. So you wouldn't notice."

I sat down. My legs felt weak.

"Lumina Ventures LLC," Bonnie said. She slid a printout across the table. "Registered in Delaware. Sole proprietor: Lilith Wallace."

I looked at the name. I'd known it in the abstract. Caden's ex-wife. The woman he dated before me. He'd mentioned her maybe twice. Always in passing. Always dismissive.

"She's not just an ex," Bonnie said. "She's the ex. The one his parents didn't approve of. The one he told you didn't matter anymore."

I picked up the paper. Stared at Lilith's name printed in black ink.

"Six hundred and forty thousand dollars," I said. "Over three years. To her."

"To her company," Bonnie corrected. "Technically. But yeah. To her."

She pulled another document. "And here's the kicker. Lumina Ventures filed for an emergency credit line four months ago. It was denied. The company's bleeding money. It's been bleeding money for two years."

"So the investment—"

"There is no investment," Bonnie said. "There's a failing company and your husband keeping it on life support."

I closed my eyes.

"Stella." Bonnie's voice softened. "I need to ask you something."

I opened my eyes.

"Did you ever suspect?"

I thought about it. Really thought about it.

"No," I said finally. "I trusted him."

Bonnie nodded. She didn't say anything else. She didn't need to.

---

I filed for divorce on Thursday morning.

Bonnie walked me to the courthouse. We submitted the paperwork at 9:15 a.m. The clerk stamped the documents and handed me a copy.

"He'll be served within forty-eight hours," Bonnie said.

I folded the paper. Put it in my bag.

My phone buzzed three hours later.

Caden: *This is embarrassing. Call me when you're done performing.*

I stared at the message. Then I turned off my phone.

---

The Stewarts called that evening.

I was sitting in Bonnie's living room when my phone lit up. Mrs. Stewart. I almost didn't answer.

But I did.

"Estella, sweetheart." Her voice was warm. Concerned. "Caden told us what happened. We're so sorry you're going through this."

I didn't respond.

"Every marriage has rough patches," she continued. "But divorce is so... public. So messy. Surely we can handle this as a family. Privately."

"There's nothing to handle," I said.

"Darling—"

"I filed this morning. It's done."

A pause. Then Mr. Stewart's voice came on the line. He must have been listening the whole time.

"A man manages his finances," he said. "That's not a crime. You're making a mistake you can't undo."

"The only mistake I made was marrying your son," I said.

I hung up.

Bonnie looked up from her laptop. "How do you feel?"

I thought about it.

"Good," I said. "I feel good."

---

Friday afternoon, Bonnie filed the emergency asset preservation order. We submitted it at 2:00 p.m. The clerk said we'd hear back within seventy-two hours.

Bonnie came home at six with a manila envelope.

"Caden's attorney responded," she said.

She pulled out a single sheet of paper. Slid it across the table.

Settlement Offer: $50,000 cash. Verbal agreement to "address remaining concerns at a later date."

I read it twice.

"Fifty thousand," I said.

"Fifty thousand," Bonnie confirmed. "Out of six hundred and forty."

I looked at her. "My mother is still intubated."

"I know."

"He thinks fifty thousand dollars and a vague promise is enough."

"I know."

I folded the paper in half. Then in half again.

"Reject it," I said. "Don't counter. Let him sweat."

Bonnie smiled. It was sharp and cold and satisfied.

"That's my girl," she said.
