Chapter 2

The phone call came at midnight. Logan's voice was clipped, professional—the tone he used with medical students who'd disappointed him. "I've scheduled a meeting with the hospital board tomorrow at ten. You should be there."

I didn't ask why. I already knew.

I hung up and sat in the dark of my hotel room, watching the city lights blur through the window. My coffee had gone cold hours ago. I'd been reviewing patient files, keeping my hands busy, keeping my mind from circling back to the image of Fallon's hand on her stomach. Three months pregnant. The timeline kept replaying in my head like a diagnostic loop I couldn't shut off.

Naomi's text came through at 6 AM: *Stairwell. Now.*

I found her on the landing between the fourth and fifth floors, the place we'd always gone when we needed to talk without being overheard. She was still in her scrubs from the night shift, dark circles under her eyes. She didn't say hello. She just pressed a folded paper into my palm.

"Read it," she said. "Then burn it."

I unfolded the page. It was a screenshot of an email chain—Logan's attorney, the hospital's HR director, and someone from the legal department I didn't recognize. The subject line read: *Expedited Psychiatric Review Protocols*. My name appeared six times in the first paragraph alone. Words jumped out at me: *erratic behavior*, *vindictive tendencies*, *patient safety concerns*.

"He's not trying to save the marriage," Naomi said quietly. "He's building a case to have you committed."

I folded the paper in half with the same precision I used for surgical drapes. It fit perfectly in my coat pocket next to the photograph of my mother. "I know," I said.

Naomi grabbed my wrist. "Chelsea. They're going to destroy you. You need to fight back *now*."

I met her eyes. "I am fighting back."

She didn't look convinced, but she let me go.

The meeting was scheduled for ten. I arrived at 9:55, wearing the same navy suit I'd worn to my board certification interview five years ago. The conference room door was already open. I could see Logan through the glass, sitting at the head of the table like he owned it. Fallon sat beside him, her hands folded protectively over her belly. She'd chosen her outfit carefully—a soft pink cardigan, minimal makeup, her hair pulled back in a way that made her look younger than her twenty-six years. Sympathetic. Vulnerable. Innocent.

Two hospital administrators I recognized flanked them on the left. On the right sat a man in an expensive suit with a leather briefcase monogrammed with the Simmons family crest.

I stepped inside. No one stood. No one greeted me.

The lawyer spoke first. "Dr. Reed. Thank you for joining us." His tone suggested I'd had a choice. He slid a document across the polished table. It stopped precisely in front of my chair.

I didn't sit. I picked up the document and read it standing.

It was three pages, single-spaced, dense with legal terminology. But the core demands were clear: I was to publicly retract my forum post within twenty-four hours, issue a formal written apology to Fallon Diaz acknowledging my "baseless and malicious accusations," and submit to voluntary psychiatric evaluation within forty-eight hours. The evaluation would be conducted by a clinician of the hospital's choosing. My medical privileges would be suspended pending the results.

The alternative was spelled out in the final paragraph: involuntary commitment proceedings under the hospital's duty-of-care protocols, immediate suspension without pay, and a formal complaint to the state medical board citing concerns about my mental fitness to practice.

I read every word. Then I set the document back on the table exactly where it had been.

Logan leaned forward. "Chelsea. This doesn't have to be difficult. We're offering you a way out."

I looked at him. At the man I'd spent five years loving, supporting, building. His expression was carefully neutral, but I could see the calculation behind it. He wasn't worried. He thought he'd already won.

I looked at Fallon. She met my gaze for half a second before dropping her eyes to her lap. Her hands tightened protectively over her stomach.

I looked at the lawyer, the administrators, the closed door behind me.

Then I turned and walked out.

No one called after me. No one followed.

I made it to the stairwell before my hands started shaking. I pressed my back against the cold concrete wall and pulled out my phone. My mother's number was still at the top of my recent calls. I stared at it for a long moment, then put the phone away.

I couldn't call her. Not yet. Not until I knew exactly what I was going to do.

But I already knew.

I was going to document everything.
