Chapter 1

Tuesday morning smelled like rain on cedar. I remember that clearly, even now. The house was quiet in the way our house was always quiet after Cole left for the office — a hush that used to feel like peace and had lately started to feel like waiting.

I was in the hallway. I had a hand on the wall, counting steps to the kitchen the way I had for two years. Seven from the bedroom door. Twelve to the marble.

I heard the dog before I felt it.

Her name was Duchess, according to Cole. He'd brought her home two weeks ago and told me my Labrador, Toby, had a heart murmur and needed to go stay with the vet. Duchess was bigger. Her paws hit the floor like someone dropping fists. She never let me touch her face.

That morning her breathing changed. It went low. Then it stopped being breathing at all and became a sound I had never heard inside my own home.

"Duchess?" My voice went thin. "Sit. Sit, girl."

She lunged.

I didn't feel teeth at first. I felt weight — a whole animal slamming into my hip like a car door. Then I was on the floor, and then I felt the teeth, and the world became one hot bright point in my right thigh.

I screamed. I screamed for Cole. I screamed for anyone. Blind people learn not to scream because it strips you of the last thing you have, which is composure. I stripped mine down to nothing that morning. I clawed at the wall for the door and couldn't find it. My hand kept landing on picture frames — our wedding, the waterfront, the ski trip in Whistler — and I remember thinking, absurdly, please don't break, please don't break.

Somewhere far away, glass shattered. A man's voice — the neighbor, Mr. Ito — was shouting something in a register I'd never heard him use. The weight came off me. I heard him kicking. I heard the dog yelp. I heard my own blood, and that is not a metaphor. It was pooling under my leg fast enough to make a sound.

"Stay with me, Mrs. Jensen. Stay with me."

Sirens later. A tourniquet. A paramedic asking me my name and me answering Sloane, Sloane Elliott, my name is Sloane Elliott, as if repeating it would keep me tethered to it.

Seattle General smelled like bleach and old coffee. I know that smell now the way a sailor knows salt.

When Cole came in, I heard his shoes first. Italian leather on linoleum. Unhurried.

And then, half a step behind him, another pair. Softer. Heels. A perfume I'd been trying to place for six months — something with orange blossom, something familiar in a way that made my stomach turn before my brain caught up.

"Doctor." Cole's voice was the one he used at board meetings. Grave, tuned, believable. "Thank you. She must have — the dog must have been provoked somehow. She can't see. She may have startled her."

Provoked. I turned that word over in my mouth like a stone.

He came to the bed. His fingers found mine. Warm, dry, familiar. Two years ago that touch had been the whole shape of my safety.

"Sloane, honey. You're okay. I'm here."

I didn't answer. The sedative was climbing my throat. Behind him, Carmen — I knew it was Carmen now, I knew — didn't say a word. She didn't have to. She stood close enough that when Cole shifted, the fabric of his sleeve brushed hers.

"I'll come back first thing in the morning," he said. He patted my hand. A pat. Like closing a folder. "Rest."

Their footsteps went out together down the corridor. Left, right, left, right, matched at the ankle. Intimate as breath.

I listened until the elevator dinged.

***

I don't want to write down the next part. I've written it down anyway, in my head, a hundred times. Around midnight, the door opened again. They thought I was under. They had every reason to think so.

Carmen laughed — low, delighted — when she saw my leg. She said I looked like something that washed up on the waterfront. Cole said something back I couldn't quite catch, and then I heard fabric, and then I heard breath, and then I heard the two of them in a rhythm that has no innocent explanation.

I bit through my lip. I tasted iron. I did not move.

Somewhere between one minute and the next, the woman who had loved Cole Jensen since she was twenty-one lay down inside my chest and did not get back up.

***

Two afternoons later, Dr. Norah Palmer closed the door behind her and pulled a chair up close to my bed. She spoke like a person who had rehearsed being calm.

"A cornea has come in. Both eyes. The match is unusually strong. The window is seventy-two hours."

I listened.

"Can it be done," I said, "in complete secrecy?"

She was quiet for a long moment. I heard her weighing her license, her clinic, the rest of her career.

"Yes," she said.

"Schedule it."

***

Forty-eight hours later, in a room that smelled of antiseptic and lavender, she peeled the gauze away.

Light.

White ceiling tiles. A crack in the corner shaped like a wishbone. The soft green of Norah's scrubs. Her eyes — hazel, tired, watching me the way you watch a fuse.

I didn't cry. I lay there and counted the tiles. One. Two. Three. Four minutes of ceiling.

Then I turned my head and looked at her. Really looked. The small mole under her jaw. The wedding band she wore on a chain instead of her finger. The photograph on her desk — a dog, a little boy in a red coat.

"I'm not going to tell anyone," I said.

Her mouth opened. She argued. Danger, ethics, isolation, the sheer weight of what I was choosing to carry alone. I let her finish.

Then I said it again, in the same level voice.

Outside her window, the Seattle sky was the color of pewter, and I could see every seam in it.

I could see.
