Chapter 1

Dante's office smelled like cedar and cold ambition. It always had.

I stood in front of his mahogany desk and watched him slide the paper toward me like it was a room service menu. One sheet. My signature line at the bottom. My career, my reputation, my entire professional identity—reduced to a single blank.

'It's straightforward,' he said. He didn't look up from his phone. 'You take responsibility for the Harmon delivery. The lawsuit goes away quietly. Everyone moves on.'

The Harmon baby. Thirty-one hours of labor. A botched forceps application. A cord wrapped twice, unnoticed, because the attending physician had been Scarlet Lynch—a woman who had purchased her senior badge with Dante's money and my silence.

The baby didn't survive.

'Scarlet was the attending,' I said. My voice came out steadier than I felt. 'I wasn't even in the building.'

'I know that.'

'Then you know what you're asking me to sign.'

He set his phone down. Finally looked at me. His eyes were the same dark brown they'd always been, but somewhere in the last ten years the warmth had drained out of them completely, like a house after the furniture is gone.

'The foundation,' he said. 'Your mother's clinics. The scholarships. The mobile units in Queens.' He let that sit for a moment. 'Defunded by morning if I make one call.'

My hands started to shake. I pressed them flat against my thighs so he wouldn't see.

Margaret Crawford had spent twenty years building that foundation from nothing. Bake sales and grant applications and nights she skipped dinner so she could mail another proposal. She died believing it would outlast her. It had, for seven years—until Dante quietly absorbed its funding into Montgomery Holdings as a tax vehicle and a leash around my neck.

I picked up the pen.

The nib scratched across the paper. My signature looked exactly like it always did. Neat. Controlled. Like it belonged to someone who still had choices.

The next afternoon was bright and cold. October in New York—the kind of day that looks beautiful through glass and punishes you the moment you step outside.

I came through the hospital's main entrance at 4:15. I remember the time because I'd checked my watch, thinking about the subway, thinking about nothing important.

They were waiting on the pavement.

I recognized the young man from the news coverage. Marcus Harmon. He'd held his wife's hand in every photo. Now he was standing six feet away from me with red eyes and clenched fists, and beside him was an older woman—his mother, I thought—with grief carved so deep into her face it looked permanent.

Then he was screaming. Then they both were. Then there were hands, and I was going down, and the concrete came up fast.

I don't remember all of it. I remember the cold of the ground. I remember someone's heel connecting with my ribs and the sound that came out of my own mouth—small, animal, nothing like a doctor.

I remember thinking: security won't come. Victor Hale will have made sure of that.

Then a body dropped over mine. Broad shoulders. A white coat. Someone was pulling me up, an arm locked around my back, a voice cutting through the noise—sharp, authoritative, commanding the crowd to move.

Kade Jackson got me through the doors.

I'd worked alongside him for six years. Senior attending, cardiothoracic. Methodical. Unflappable. The kind of doctor who made the residents feel like the chaos was manageable simply by walking into the room. I'd never needed him to carry me before.

He was already calling for a gurney before we cleared the lobby. His voice didn't waver once.

The ER fluorescents were merciless. I lay on my back and stared at them and catalogued my own damage the way you do when you've been trained to assess before you feel—two cracked ribs, probable. Laceration above my left eye, definitely. Bruised kidney, maybe.

The attending—Dr. Reyes, second year, trying very hard not to look horrified—came back with the blood panel results.

She said the words carefully. The way you say something when you're not sure how it will land.

Pregnant.

The room kept going. Monitors beeped. Someone dropped a tray somewhere down the hall. The world did not pause for the information.

But I did.

After four years of failed cycles and empty ultrasound screens and Dante's disinterest hardening into something that felt like contempt—after all of that—there was a heartbeat that wasn't mine.

I didn't cry. I pressed one hand flat against my abdomen, very lightly, and stared at the ceiling tiles, and felt something flicker open in my chest like a window in a room that had been sealed shut for a very long time.

Elena Vasquez was my assigned nurse. I'd seen her in the halls for years—quiet, observant, the kind of person who notices everything and says very little. She looked at my chart, looked at me, and I watched her make a decision.

She typed something. Then she closed the screen.

'It's not in the main system,' she said quietly. Just that.

She squeezed my hand once. Dimmed the lights. Left me alone with the only secret I had left worth keeping.
