Chapter 3

The call came on the tenth day.

It was 9:40 p.m. I was in the back of the car, coming home from a dinner with three bankers who laughed too loud. Rain slid down the window in thin, crooked lines.

His name lit up my screen. *Lane.*

I answered. "Yes."

"Mom." His voice was clear. Steady. Not the boy who ate cake from the box. Someone who had practiced. "I need to say something. And I need you to just listen for once."

I listened.

"I've been thinking a lot out here. Like, really thinking." He took a breath. "Sasha is the kind of mother I always wished I had. She's warm. She actually *sees* me. She doesn't make me earn it."

The driver turned onto Fifth Avenue. The wipers went back and forth.

"You never hugged me unless there were people watching," he said. "You put my birthday in a calendar. You're cold, Mom. You control everything. I don't think you even know how to love anybody. I don't think you can."

He waited. I could hear the ocean behind him. And wind chimes.

"Say something," he said. "Fight me. Anything."

I thought about the operating room. The cold light on the ceiling. A nurse pressing on my stomach while someone shouted numbers. The empty chair.

I had stayed alive that night for him.

One second. Two. Three.

"I heard you," I said.

I hung up.

Then I opened my contacts. I found his name. I pressed *Delete*. The phone asked if I was sure.

I was sure.

The screen went back to normal. Nothing in the car changed. The rain kept falling. The driver kept driving.

I looked out at the wet city and noticed my thumb was still pressed hard against the glass of the phone. I made it stop.

---

Two days later, my assistant quit.

Claire had been with me for four years. Her email arrived at 6:02 a.m. Two lines. *Effective immediately. I'm sorry.* No reason. No call.

Rachel read it over my shoulder. "Did you yell at her?"

"I don't yell."

"That's worse, honestly."

HR sent me six resumes. I rejected all six before lunch.

Then, on Thursday afternoon, someone knocked on my open door.

He was tall. Late thirties. A good suit that had been pressed one too many times. Dark hair. He was smiling like we were old friends.

"Ms. Armstrong. I'm Eithan Wagner. I heard you need an assistant."

"Who let you up here?"

"Your receptionist. I told her I was desperate." He smiled wider. "It wasn't a lie."

I leaned back in my chair. "Explain."

"My family had a small investment firm. It went under last month. Bad bets. Worse lawyers." He shrugged, easy. "I can type. I can file. I can get coffee. I'll do anything. Anything. I need the paycheck."

I studied his face. Something about it scratched at the back of my mind.

"Have we met?"

"Once." He touched the edge of his cuff and straightened it. "A lunch. A long time ago. You told me the restaurant's fish was overcooked and so was my opening line."

I didn't remember. Not really. Only white tablecloths and being twenty-three and bored.

"Two weeks," I said. "Probation. Minimum pay. If you're late once, you're gone."

"I won't be late."

"Everyone says that."

"I'm not everyone." He said it lightly. Like a joke.

I gave him until Thursday. Next Thursday. Most people broke in a week.

---

On Monday, I walked into my office at 7:12.

He was already there. Standing by the window. A white cup on my desk.

I hadn't told him my order. I hadn't told him anything.

At exactly 7:14, he slid it an inch toward me. "Black. Very hot."

I took a sip. Scalding. Correct.

"Who told you?"

"Nobody." He smiled. "You look like a woman who doesn't have time for milk."

I didn't answer. I opened my briefings.

By Wednesday, he had rebuilt my calendar. He moved two calls to the car. He stacked my meetings by floor so I stopped riding the elevator up and down like a yo-yo. He cut a standing lunch that had been useless for three years.

I checked the math that night. Forty minutes saved. Every day.

I didn't tell him.

---

On Friday, Halbrook Partners came in to fight.

They wanted a piece of our logistics division. Their CEO talked for twenty minutes about "synergy" while his lawyers smiled at my board. Two of my directors were nodding. I could feel the room tilting.

Then a folded note appeared by my elbow. I hadn't seen Eithan move.

Three lines. Neat block letters.

*Their Q3 debt rolls over in 60 days.*

*They need our cash flow, not our routes.*

*Ask about the Denver lease.*

I read it once. Then I folded it into my palm.

"That's a lovely vision," I said. "Tell me about Denver."

The CEO's smile stopped. Just for a second. His lawyer looked down at his papers.

Ten minutes later, they were packing their briefcases.

After the room emptied, Eithan was gathering water glasses. Humming. Like a man who had done nothing at all.

I said nothing to him.

But I watched him walk out. He took a second phone from his inside pocket, glanced at it, and put it away fast.

I noticed.

I notice everything.
