My Husband Left Me in the Avalanche for His Mistress

Seven years of marriage, and I gave Rowan everything—even my body, scarred by a childhood accident, against my doctor's warnings. He called this expedition his last great ride, so I agreed, believing love meant showing up. Now I'm trapped beneath the snow in Colorado, and he's not digging me out. He's escaping with his mistress. My survival is my own fight, and when I rise, so does the reckoning.

Chapter 2

They kept me under fluorescent light for three days, waking me every four hours to check my pupils, my legs, the numbers on a screen that told them how close I'd come to not existing anymore. My spine, the doctor said, had "tolerated significant additional trauma." My core temperature had dropped low enough that they used a word I didn't like: irreversible. I hadn't let myself think too hard about what that meant yet. I was still learning how to breathe without pain sitting on my chest like a second avalanche.

Rowan had been in and out. Mostly out. He said there were reporters, sponsors, statements to manage. I lay there and pressed my thumb into the mattress where my back used to be, and I didn't ask him what he'd told them about the rope.

That afternoon, the door opened and Waverly walked in holding a bouquet of white tulips like she'd rehearsed the angle of her wrist.

"Lillian." Her voice cracked, soft and stricken. "I've been so worried."

I didn't answer. I watched her set the flowers on the windowsill, watched her pull the visitor's chair close to my bed with the careful, silent movements of someone who'd walked this exact path in her head a dozen times before doing it in real life.

"That mountain," she said, shaking her head. "I still can't believe we made it out." She reached for my hand. Her fingers were warm and dry and I wanted to pull away, but the IV line tugged at my wrist and I was too tired to fight my own arm. "You scared us all so bad."

"We," I said. My voice came out sanded down, barely there. "Funny word."

Something flickered behind her eyes—there and gone, quick as a blink. She smiled instead, small and sympathetic, the exact shape of a woman who had done nothing wrong. "You should rest," she said. "I just wanted to see you were okay."

Her hand drifted from mine. I thought she was reaching to smooth my blanket. Instead she picked up the paper cup on my tray—the one the nurse had filled with water from the hot dispenser down the hall, the one I'd asked for to loosen the tightness in my throat—and in one smooth, unhurried motion, she poured it over her own forearm.

The scream that came out of her didn't match the speed of what she'd just done. It was too big, too immediate, too perfectly pitched to carry down a hospital corridor.

"It burns—oh my God, it burns—" She staggered back from the bed, cradling her arm, tears already streaking down her face like she'd been holding them in reserve. "Why would you—"

I didn't understand yet. I was still trying to make sense of the mechanics of what I'd just watched—the calm hand, the deliberate tilt of the cup—when the door slammed open and Rowan filled the frame.

He didn't look at me first. He looked at Waverly, sobbing, clutching her reddening arm, and something in his face went white and then black in the space of a heartbeat.

"What happened," he said. Not a question. An accusation already halfway formed.

"She threw it at me," Waverly whispered, and the lie came out of her so easily, so wetly, that for one disorienting second I almost doubted my own memory.

Rowan crossed the room in three strides. I didn't have time to lift my hands before his closed around my throat.

His fingers pressed into my windpipe and the world narrowed to a single bright point of panic. I grabbed at his wrist—the wrist I had held during our wedding vows, during every turbulence-shaken flight, during every ordinary Tuesday of seven years—and it didn't move. It didn't even register that I was touching it.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" he snarled, his face inches from mine, spit landing on my cheek. "She's twenty-three. She's been through enough. What is wrong with you?"

I couldn't answer. I couldn't breathe enough to answer. I looked at his hands—the hands that had let go of a rope three days ago, the hands now closing around my throat because a girl he trusted more than his own wife had cried on cue—and I understood, with a clarity that felt almost peaceful, that I was looking at a stranger.

A nurse's shout finally broke him loose. He stepped back like he'd surfaced from underwater, blinking, as if he didn't fully know how his hands had gotten there. He didn't apologize. He went to Waverly instead, murmuring, guiding her out to be looked at, and the door swung shut behind them, and I was alone again with the sound of my own ragged breathing and the shape of his fingers already darkening on my skin.

That night, once the nurses had documented the bruising and left me to rest, I asked for my phone. I called my attorney. My voice was hoarse, but my instructions were not.

By morning, the papers were waiting at the front desk. I signed them alone, before visiting hours started, before Rowan could walk through that door again with an explanation already loaded in his mouth.

I didn't tell him.

I just asked the nurse to hold them until he came looking for me. Some choices don't need an audience. This was mine.
