Chapter 1

The phone lit up at 2:47 in the morning.

I was standing at the kitchen counter in the dark, reaching for the water glass I'd left there after dinner, and Xander's phone was just—there. Face-up. Glowing that particular blue-white that means a new message.

*Miss you already. Tonight was everything. — G*

The counter edge cut into the heel of my hand. I'd pressed into it without realizing. I read the message twice. Then the screen dimmed and the kitchen went back to dark, and I stood there very still the way you go still when you've heard something fall somewhere in the house and you're waiting to understand whether it broke.

I filled the water glass. I drank it. I didn't go back to bed.

I found a grocery receipt on the counter and I started drawing on the back of it—just lines, at first. A hem. A collar. My hand knew what to do even when the rest of me didn't. By the time the kitchen windows shifted from black to gray to the pale, dishonest light of a Manhattan dawn, I had sketched an entire collection I would never actually make, and I understood, in the wordless way you understand things you've known for years, that her name wasn't G to him. It was Gemma.

It had always been Gemma.

I sat in that dark kitchen and finally let the red flags walk back through me, one by one—every time he'd gone quiet at a certain kind of song, every dinner cut short by a phone call he took in the hallway, every moment I'd asked myself a question and then answered it myself before he had to. Eight years of answered questions. Eight years of me being very careful not to know what I knew.

The receipt was covered in charcoal lines by the time the sun came up.

---

Over coffee, I watched him pour two mugs with the ease of a man who had slept clean.

"Bar doing okay?" I asked. "Financially?"

He didn't pause. That was the thing about Xander—the smoothness. Always the smoothness. "Solid. Summer was rough for everyone, but we're stabilizing." He set my mug down and smiled, and the smile reached his eyes, and I thought: *how do you do that?*

"Good," I said. "I'm glad."

That afternoon, I went to the bar. I told myself it was to retrieve a mood board I'd left in the back office, which was true. What was also true was that I needed to see the shelving units I'd designed, the label fonts I'd sourced, the entire aesthetic I'd spent six months building for him from scratch, and I needed to see it with eyes that were finally, irreversibly open.

Derek was behind the bar doing inventory. Xander's older brother had always regarded me with the particular warmth of someone tolerating a long houseguest—cordial, obligatory, faintly impatient. We made the usual small talk. Two people going through the motions because they've shared too many dinners not to bother.

Then he said, offhandedly, the way people say things they assume don't matter: "Hell of a thing Xander did for the Hernandez girl. Took a real bath on the whole Salazar Reserve line to clear her family's stock. Had buyers lined up for months on those bottles."

I picked up my mood board. I said, "Mm."

I walked out into the afternoon heat and stood on the sidewalk and breathed.

The Salazar Reserve line. Three years of careful curation. The asset I had heard him call untouchable in the same breath he used to explain why the timing wasn't right for my graduate collection samples. Once. I had asked once, eight years ago. He'd said the timing wasn't right.

The timing was never right for me.

---

The suitcase was already packed when he got home at seven. One bag. Everything that was actually mine fit into one bag, which told me something about how I'd been living.

He stopped in the doorway. I watched the expressions move through him—surprise, then calculation, then something that looked almost like relief before it rearranged itself into offense.

"Derek told me about the Salazar Reserve line," I said. My voice was steady. I had spent all afternoon making it steady.

"That was a business decision—"

"I know." I stood. "That's exactly what it was. A business decision for her, and for me it was never a question of timing." I paused. "I think you knew that I knew that. I think I let you know it."

He moved toward me, hands up in that particular way of his—the *let me explain* posture that had worked on me for eight years because I had always, always wanted to be explained to.

But I thought about 2:47 in the morning. A grocery receipt covered in jacket sketches. The careful blue glow of a phone screen in a dark kitchen.

"I know the difference," I said quietly, "between being loved and being kept."

I picked up my suitcase. I walked past him to the door.

He didn't stop me. That, more than anything, was the answer I'd been waiting eight years to receive.
