Chapter 1

My husband bought a villa for Addison, but Addison wanted to redecorate it because she thought the decoration was not good.

He handed the decoration project to my father and asked him to complete it within three months.

My father thought it was a new house we moved to and he worked day and night.

On my father’s birthday, the temperature was 39 degrees and I knew he was working on the construction site.

I wanted to bring a cake to celebrate his birthday, but I ran into my father lying on the concrete floor without a heartbeat.

I called my husband more than a dozen times until he finally got through, “What’s the matter? I’m very busy now and I don’t have time to talk to you.”

At the same time, a gentle and complaining voice came to my ear, “When will the villa be decorated? Hurry them up, I can’t wait!”

I cried and replied in a low voice. “Come back and let’s get a divorce.”

——

I wiped my tears, dragged my tired body and silently handled my father’s funeral alone.

When the staff handed me the urn, I didn’t even realize that it contained my father.

Not long ago, he was still telling me to give him a grandson as soon as possible, because it was too boring to be alone.

But now he would never urge me to give birth again.

Darren did not return home until the next night.

“I brought you a midnight snack, your favorite crayfish and Coke, eat it quickly!”

He put the bag of things on the tea table in front of the sofa as if nothing had happened, slumped on the sofa, untied his tie and leaned toward me.

I glanced at the bag and it was obvious that he had packed it with his childhood sweetheart after eating crayfish.

He was always like this. Whenever he made me unhappy, he tried to coax me with my favorite midnight snacks or things. And I, always feel soft-hearted, thought that he had bowed his head and admitted his mistakes, giving me a way out, so I would calm down and not care.

I turned sideways, with my back to him, my eyes were already swollen from crying.

Seeing that I didn’t move for a long time, he frowned slightly and softened his tone. “There were indeed some things to deal with yesterday. Can’t you be considerate of your husband? I am out doing business every day.”

He reached out to lift the strands of hair hanging in front of my eyes and I slapped his hand away fiercely. I realized that Darren was so good at lying, as if I had just recognized him at this moment.

My heart ached when I thought of my father working so hard to decorate his childhood sweetheart on the construction site in a high temperature of 39 degrees. He knew that my father retired early because of his heart disease, but he lied to my father and said that he was decorating the new house we bought and coaxed him to come back to do this project.

It was because my father was honest, professional and responsible and wanted to give his childhood sweetheart the best. Seeing that I was still angry, he thought I was throwing a tantrum with him and sighed helplessly.

“Okay, okay, as compensation, look at what this is?” He blinked his eyes and took out two Justin Bieber concert tickets and handed them to me.

“You’ve been waiting for a long time. I bought it from a scalper at a high price. I’ll go with you to see it this weekend. Don’t be angry with me, okay?”

Since his childhood sweetheart came back, we had always gone out with three people, whether it was watching a movie or going out to eat.

He always said that Addison had no friends, so taking her would be more company.

The two concert tickets he threw at me were not just two.

I sneered coldly, picked up the two tickets, tore them up indifferently and threw them in his face.

“Darren, take your childhood sweetheart. I won’t accompany you anymore!”

I stood up and prepared to leave, but he grabbed my hand tightly and pulled me into his arms.

“Penelope, what are you doing? Addison… I just treat her as my sister, why do you have to be jealous?”

I broke free from his hand and slapped him in the face with my backhand.

His pupils dilated in surprise. He didn’t expect that I would actually hit him for the first time.

He looked down at me, his eyes were fierce. He grabbed my wrist and spit on my face. “Penelope, without your father’s discipline, have you grown up? You even learned domestic violence.”

“Don’t mention my father to me! You don’t deserve it!”

I was furious, my face flushed. Darren, the indirect murderer, killed my father and now he dared to mention him.

“Call your father now. I want to tell him what’s wrong with your daughter and let him discipline you!”

Darren threw me to the sofa and my head hit the wall next to me, which made me see stars for a moment.

“Dad has already…”

I covered my head and trembled. Before I finished speaking, I was interrupted by Darren.

“Forget it, don’t let dad worry about it. Can you be more sensible? Just calm down and I can pretend nothing happened.”

After saying that, he slammed the door and went into the second bedroom. Every time after a quarrel, he would take the initiative to sleep in the second bedroom and start cold violence until I compromised.

I covered my swollen and painful head and my heart was cold.

If I had known it would be like this today, I would never have agreed to his proposal.
