Chapter 3

The penthouse was dead silent when I walked in.

Liam was at the Four Seasons, entertaining foreign investors until midnight. The living room was dark, save for the blue glow of the Manhattan skyline spilling through the floor-to-ceiling glass.

I didn't take off my coat. I kept my boots on and walked straight toward the master bedroom.

On the far wall of the corridor hung the porcelain butterfly installation. Hundreds of delicate, pale wings pinned into the gray stone, frozen in a silent swarm. Liam had spent half a million dollars to have an artisan in Santorini shape every single one by hand.

*You’re the only beautiful thing I’ve ever wanted to keep,* he had whispered against my neck the night it was finished.

I kept my chin up and stared straight ahead. I did not look at the wall. Not once.

Inside the bedroom, I switched on the small lamp on my nightstand. The circle of warm light fell across the dark walnut bookshelf by the window.

I walked over and reached for the third shelf. There, tucked between two heavy monographs on classical sculpture, sat a worn, cloth-bound art catalogue from college. I slid it out.

Inside the back cover was an ultrasound printout.

The thermal paper was thin and fragile. It was folded once down the center, the crease worn soft and fuzzy from years of secret touches.

I unfolded it under the lamp.

The image was grainy and gray. Just a soft curve of a spine, the faint shadow of a head, a tiny hand tucked against a chest. Six months. I had felt those tiny kicks against my ribs. I had picked out yellow nursery paint and bought soft cotton socks.

*Fifty grand,* Liam’s recorded voice echoed in my head. *He did his job. A child gives a woman a spine.*

My stomach contracted, a sickening drop into an abyss. But my eyes stayed clear. I didn't shed a single tear. The grief was gone, burned away by a cold, hard stone sitting where my heart used to be.

I folded the paper back along its worn crease. I slipped it into the left pocket of my wool coat.

My fingers touched something else inside the lining. A small, cold metal disc with rounded edges. It was a brass button. It had popped off my father’s favorite charcoal office coat the day his firm fell apart, right before his heart gave out on the boardroom floor.

I had carried it for years. Now, the two things Liam had stolen from me rested side by side in my pocket.

I zipped the pocket shut.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the dresser.

The harsh vibration rattled against the wood. I picked it up.

The caller ID flashed: *Whitfield Psychiatric – Urgent.*

A knot tightened in my gut. I answered and pressed the phone to my ear. "Elia speaking."

"Mrs. Herrera?" The nurse’s voice was breathless, pitched high with panic. "Thank God. You need to come right now."

"What happened?" I asked. My voice came out flat, but my knuckles whitened around the phone. "Is it my mother?"

"Someone bypassed the main desk ten minutes ago," the nurse said, her words tumbling over each other. "They sent a message to the tablet in her room through the patient portal. It had a file attached. And a note."

"What did the note say?"

"It said..." The nurse hesitated, her voice trembling. "*'Your daughter stayed because of you. Now you know why.'*"

The air left my chest.

Ariyah.

She hadn't just shown the recording to me. She had sent it to my mother. She wanted Miranda broken so badly that I would have no choice but to pack my bags and run.

"Did she listen to it?" I demanded.

"She heard the whole thing," the nurse said, near tears. "She started screaming, Mrs. Herrera. She knocked over the medicine cart. She shoved her heavy oak wardrobe against the door. We can’t get the master key to turn!"

"I'm on my way," I said. "Call security. Break the door down. Do whatever you have to do!"

"We're trying, but—"

I ended the call and ran.

I don't remember the elevator ride down to the garage. I don't remember starting the car.

All I remember was the blur of yellow taxi cabs, the red tail-lights, and the scream of my tires as I tore onto the highway. The drive to Whitfield usually took forty-five minutes. I made it in under twenty.

I left the car parked crookedly across the yellow lines of the ambulance bay and sprinted inside.

The front lobby was usually quiet and dignified. Tonight, yellow emergency strobe lights pulsed against the marble floors. Staff members jogged down the hallways with keycards in hand. Radios crackled with loud bursts of static.

"Clear the third floor!" someone shouted down the corridor. "Check the service exits!"

I reached the central bank of elevators and jammed the button. When the silver doors slid open, a head nurse stepped out.

Her scrub top was rumpled, her face chalk-white. The moment she saw me, her eyes widened in horror.

"Mrs. Herrera," she gasped, grabbing my forearms. Her hands were shaking so hard I could feel the tremor through my coat.

"Where is she?" I asked. My voice sounded distant, like it belonged to someone else. "Did you get into the room?"

The nurse swallowed. She lowered her voice to a terrified whisper.

"She wasn't inside. She used an old maintenance key she stole months ago. She jammed the stairwell latch behind her."

The nurse pointed a trembling finger toward the emergency exit sign at the end of the hall.

"She's on the rooftop."

The world tilted.

I ripped my arms from the nurse’s grip, turned, and threw myself toward the stairs.
